star wars IS SAFE NOW.

Thank the maker.

As impressed as I am by Harmy's recent Despecialized v2, knowing that a scan of the actual 100% real deal exists is extremely gratifying.

Star Wars is too important to the history of cinema to stand by and let it suffer the fate of Metropolis, which has only recently been rescued from its own butchering and almost completely preserved 80 years after its initial release.

I don't usually post as I have no skills or materials to add to the community, but seeing how far this project has come, after following it for so long, it makes you proud to be a Star Wars fan. I think this is perfectly summed up by -1's quote:

"Star Wars is safe."

Think about who is creating this, and indeed all other preservations on this board. Think about who is, initially anyway, going to be downloading and watching them. While George Lucas and his team did create the series, we are the ones who kept it alive. You think they keep re-releasing them in cinemas to appease the all the trendy kids, jocks and pretty boys? No.

We are the ones who bought it multiple times on home video, laserdisc, dvd and blu-ray.

We are the ones who have dropped hundreds, and often thousands on toys, merchandise and memorabilia.

We are the ones who stood in line for days just to be the first to see a new Star Wars film.

We are the ones who did keep and are now keeping this film series going. It seems almost poetic that we now, are the ones who shall guard it for future generations to experience what we experienced.

I tip my hat to you. All of you.

about the bonus content

from the jedi1.com blog..

i will be previewing an ISO of the

dvd that will contain the material

from there... its 3.6 gig right now!

anyways... i'll double check it, and

we might replace some of the videos

with higher quality versions..

i don't want it to be too big... but

it should still fit as much as possible

onto a 4.7G SD DVD...

you will be able to download this also

a separate extra bonus, with background

material on this, other topics, and also

quite a bit on the ESB 35mm project also...

more on this once i get it...

thanks to williarob for this!

Can that be a download as soon as it is finished?

i doubt it will be finished before the release.

the best case would be around the same time.

i still have to add all the videos in higher quality.

and go through and make sure all the links work.

it might be better to just put the data in one area.

and create new video chapters for all the sequences.

it would be easier to watch. but then it wouldn't be

integrated into the site... also, i could just leave the

low resolution files in there, and do the video separately.

still working on it..

thanks, but technicallly, unless you watch the raw version,

with correction..... you'll be seeing a digitally altered version

that's about 95% original, incuding stabilization, clean up,

dewarping, and digital fixes..... still that's much better than any

other version out there!

sometimes i forget,

since i've been watching only bits

and pieces of the original lately.

that i really haven't BEEN WATCHING

the movie at all, looking for things..

i think this is the 5th time, i've watched

the original 1977 version in its entirety.

the first was in 1977 and the second

in 1979, and the other two might have

been at other peoples house on video/cable.

i usually watch the SE versions, so it's

weird not seeing jabba, or the cg creatures/ships,

or the effects or colors from those versions!

interesting..................

I understand that this is a 1080p project, but since you've gone through the tremendous effort you have, are you going to be able to have a full resolution version stored anywhere for posterity, until the technology to view and present 4K is available to the masses?

we're not working in 4k..

anyways, the more we think about the issue of distribution

of raw files. the further it slips away through our fingers...

we are looking into the possibility of some archive service,

but even that will be a longshot...

the more i think about it, there will most likely only be our

own personal archives, and possibly one given out to a single

person via mail/drives, and then that person could pass it onto

another.. and form a chain that way... that's how it used to

work in the past... might have to bring that model out of

retirement.. as more time passes, the less likely anything

will happen.. but you never know?

 I know its not 4k..

But I forget what it actually was?

I know the

raw files are more than 1080p.

or 2K? But is it maybe 2 1/2 K or 3K or 3 1/2 K?

in the beginning...

there was star wars...

here's a look at the comparison

of the cleanup of the original intro..

remember, this is a red faded print

that had the original crawl which was

used to splice into the lpp:

i'll post the full cleaned up version soon..

Thanks to ALL involved for such an awesome project.

That is absolutely amazing -1. Seriously - great work.

You know, this project reminds me of that line in the title - "Rebel spaceships, striking from a hidden base, have won their first victory against the Galactic Empire." It is amazing, if not slightly sad, that hundreds of fan-preservationists have done what one man refuses to do.

Love that rating card. You guys are doing such amazing work with these transfers. It's a privelege being able to see how film is worked on, something 99% of us would never had had the opportunity to have seen without these updates. I'm quite envious.

thanks, it's a privilege to work on them,

and to work with people that care for them so much.

and also with people that have commented with all

the knowledge they have on the subject here on the

board.. that's why i keep putting links to all the other

sections, which people need to read and check to

learn more about these things...

if it wasn't for the knowledge on this board,

NONE of this would have happened.

and we'd still be sitting around wondering what

we could do..

With all the care and love you're showing this film, I can't imagine the opportunity being better served by any other group of people. It seems you also share a common philosophy with a number of people on this board on how to best preserve the film. You're exercising amazing restraint by not going over the top and removing every single speck and scratch and turning this into a glossy, textureless nightmare like the Blu-ray. Hat's off.

And, as with Mike Verta's preservation effort's, if I never get to see this I'd still be happy knowing that it's out there and that somebody is going to see it the way it should be seen. Hopefully a bunch of seven year old kids on a big screen with a bone rattling sound system :)
