Well, The Criterion Collection is considered to be near perfect with their transfers. They use the best elements, the best scanners, the least destructive cleanup, and do their research to make sure things look right. Check out this comparison for Spartacus - which one looks more like FILM?:

They were the first ones to release Bond films in widescreen, on laserdisc. But they haven't done any Bond since. It might have something to do with the producers not liking the commentary tracks that were used.
