What are your improvements?  I'm interested to hear about it!

I rendered "my dubbing" using the Wav PCM Uncompressed codec. Also, I applied a little noise reduction and a "de-muffle" process. Uploading now.

Interesting.  It was definitely pretty muffled before, I'd love to see how it got de-muffled!  I tried this out myself briefly with no success!

UPDATE: I believe those of you downloading Harmy's new Despecialized 2.0 MKV will be able to see all 22 languages from the upcoming Project Threepio 5.0.  FYI, Czech was badly mangled in version 4.0 by using the wrong character set--this will be corrected in 5.0.  Thanks Harmy!

Project files have been updated to version 5.0 (original post has been updated as well).  The new download links are NOT the same as before, so please PM me for the links.

Rough summary of changes:

Added seven new languages: Japanese, Polish, Romanian, Croatian, Hungarian, Greek, and Bulgarian.  Also fixed a major codepage problem with the Czech subtitles, so these are essentially new to this version too.  Also, I found a better (and free) CJK font, so the Chinese subtitles have been re-rendered.

All of the subtitles above are unverified subs, with the exception of Japanese.  The Japanese subtitles are a bit of an odd exception--they are available as scaled graphical subtitles (scaled from Standard Definition), but they are verified, so the quality of the translation is good, but unfortunately they don't look quite as sharp as the subtitles for other languages.  I was able to create forced SRT files from a totally different unverified source, but there are no full SRT files.  Simply put, OCR on Japanese text is hard, and requires significant manual correction which I am not able to do.

As for the difference between "verified" and "unverified"--basically all of the verified subs are, to some degree, checked against official subs and/or someone who speaks the language, so they may still have problems, but they're generally pretty good.  Unverified subs are just converted fansubs, and I have no idea if they're good or not, I only know they're the correct language and that Google translate more-or-less verified that they are somewhat accurate.  I suspect some of the unverified subtitles are excellent quality--Romanian and Chinese, for example.  Others may be problematic or terribly uneven between films.  But the primary goal is intelligibility--perfection can come later.

My "world domination map" is getting pretty full.  There's a pretty obvious big gap running through South Asia, and Korea is frustratingly missing, but other than that, things are looking pretty good.

And finally, after many offhand remarks about needing to take a break, I am really taking a long hiatus from this project.  I'll still be around the forums, but I won't be working on this very much, if at all, for quite a long time.  I've got a baby on the way and, well, that takes precedence over pretty much everything.

EDIT: Also updated the screenshots on my original post, because it's now passé to post screenshots with theatrically inaccurate colors ;)

Bahasa Indonesia and Vietnamese were two languages I had SE subs for but could not convert, because the words were so numerous/big they couldn't always fit on two lines at a readable size.  I suspect this could be an issue with any language that was retrofitted with a Latin alphabet to replace its native alphabet, so Bahasa Malaysia would fall into that category too.  It's very similar to the issues faced in the Nordic subs, where literal line-for-line translation would result in word salad all over the screen.

With the help of a native speaker who could handle some trimming and paraphrasing, however, we could make it work.  I'm hopeful.

EDIT: Actually those are the very Bahasa Indonesia SE subtitles I have!  If he's willing to help us trim these down or retime them for the OOT, it would be awesome.  I want to keep all languages to a maximum of two lines of text, three starts to have problems.

We have some developments with regard to Thai subtitles.  I have Thai subtitles (scaled graphics only, like Japanese) for Star Wars, but I do not plan to update the project until we have Thai subs for all three films, and this may take a while.

I've shared what I have with Harmy (maybe too late for the BD), and special thanks to none for helping get these.

Project files have been updated to version 5.1 (original post has been updated as well).  The new download links are NOT the same as before, so please PM me for the links.

Rough summary of changes:

Added Thai (scaled only), and re-rendered Arabic using a more legible font.  Instructions for changing subtitles into different formats are greatly simplified.  The packages are also a little different: one package includes everything, and then two smaller packages just have DVD subs and sources.

I've just discovered that Project Threepio 5.1 appears to have been posted to the newsgroups (a.b.sw) and to MySpleen.  It appears to be the real thing, so people can get it from there.  Which is just as well, really, since I'm going to be unreachable for many months, starting any day now (KittenBus is coming).  I'll update the first post so people don't try to PM me for this anymore.

netflix has to have all their stuff captioned by 2014

guess, that includes star wars eventually..

I doubt it.  Even if Star Wars becomes available for streaming someday, when it comes to movies with multiple editions, Netflix tends to just pick one edition and make only that one edition available.  It's quite possible they'll just stream the Special Editions they currently have on disc, if for no reason other than it's easier.  When browsing titles, Netflix treats the Special Editions as if they were Star Wars, so they probably don't feel like Star Wars is lacking from their catalog at all!

So even if we someday win the war and get the originals properly released, physical media may have become so irrelevant by then to most people that much of the world may not be able to see Star Wars anyway, so the battle just moves to the streaming services.  Bleh to the rental model future.  I'll be kicking and screaming, I tell you.

i think my point is,

that they might do close caption versions,

and not the standard subtitles.

but i'm not sure. i don't use netflix.

I am willing to help with getting the Japanese Subs into a proper srt file.  It will have to be in my spare time obviously, but I think we can eventually get it done.  I would love to get the despecialized versions to some friends over in Japan with proper subs so they can watch the original dialogue.  PM me if you need my help.

FYI, for those of you using Thai subs, the 720p Thai subs are marked with the wrong framerate.  This is easily fixable... open them in BDSup2Sub (4.0.1) and change the framerate from 23.976 to 23.976 (yes, the "from" and "to" framerates should be the same), then export the result.  The Thai DVD subs are timed correctly.  I've provided updated files to Harmy.

FYI, it was another boy!  A friend of mine had jokingly offered to show my kids how to throw a ball properly, and I'm afraid I may have to take him up on it now.

A sincere congratulations! I don't know if it's your first or not, but either way, it's the start of a new chapter for you. Best of luck in all that is to come. Somewhat related, I am just now starting to try and snag these, but it is slow going at the moment. The thoroughness is to be commended, and I can't wait to test out the German subs

May the Force be with you.

Catbus,
Thanks for pointing me out this thread.

I'm not a NewsG guy so I have a hard time to get a hand on SRT subtitles files for the movies :o

Tried some programs and sites but without managing to get the files...
Can you provide some direct links?

I won't care about which hoster(s) you could choose. ;)

I din't find the subtitles even on some well-known subs sites and it's missing!
It could highlight the despecialized versions!

Check MySpleen.  You can get an invite for the site from WalkingDork.

I drop a message as I managed to get all the SRT files, thanks to you. Much appreciated.

If someone need the files, I packed them in a rar archive and uploaded them of some hosters. I don't know if I'm allowed to publish the links here, so if anybody wants them, feel free to ask me by mail.

awesome project, I probably am just not looking in the right place but are there subs for the Despecialized versions of Empire and ROTJ? All I really care for is the English subs since I'm English and all. Please point me the right way kind sir. And thank you too!

Author

First of all--yes, this project has the whole trilogy available in all languages.  The subs are in various formats depending on what you're looking for--SRT for software/HTPC playback and SUP for DVDs, Blu-rays, and AVCHDs.  English has a couple variations just on its own--typical and SDH (hard of hearing).

The complete project (all languages/all movies/all formats) is available on MySpleen and a.b.starwars.  The project package is big, because it has everything.  MKVCorp said he uploaded the SRT files only to some web hosters, and you could contact him for the links.  I'm a little hands-off on this project right now due to a new baby, so hopefully that will be enough to get you going.
