Just watched the DVD5 version. While the shift in resolution on the GOUT scenes were perceptible in the 720p MKV, on the SD DVD the switch was seamless!
Excellent work Harmy. My hat is off to you.

This is a HUGE improvement compared to the old PDE and DE 1.0.
It looked absolutely professional, I watched it with my family (with the czech dub for nostalgic reasons) and nobody wanted to believe me that this is a work of a student done on a home computer :-)

Was there anything in particular I need to think about when I'm muxing new audio with mkvmerge?
And the subtitles, remember something about renaming them and/or put them in another folder?

I'll probably check in again in a couple months once the blu ray is released to get a better idea of where things are at. In the meantime, congratulations on a job well done. Congrats too on your thesis. Best of luck again on your exams - im sure you'll do just fine. You have an attitude and dedication to success thats rare.
hmmm...you're wrong ;-) The BD will be much more than just that. It will have menu, extras and everything that a proper BD release should have. And it will be a BD25 ISO.

The subtitles are stored in an external folder, if you want to watch with subtitles, take your chosen subtitle .srt file from the
"Subtitles - Project Threepio" folder, copy it to the folder with the .mkv file and rename the .srt file to the same name as the .mkv file,
while keeping the .srt extension.

Just watched this on an 1080p Epson projector on a 110" screen. What can I say?!?? Absolutely stunning! It's remarkable the difference to a film that colour timing can make. Finally this looks like a film made in 1977, the film I fell in love with in a cinema in 1980! Had so many goosebump moments it'd be futile to list them here! Really couldn't see the joins/seems where old footage was reinserted - was way too busy being swept up in a galaxy far, far away to care! That in itself should indicate what a superlative job Harmy has done here! I can now completely enjoy & be immersed in this film once again, without mentally tensing for the next change, whether to the soundtrack, the additions, the colouring etc etc etc. The film felt organic again, and of its era. LOVED the colour-timing. The film grain. Spot on. Still the occasional black crush but that's the bluray source for you. It still looks utterly fantastic. I just want to fire up the projector and watch it right through again frankly. Even my folks who rarely notice such things commented on how 'film-like' & 'punchy' it looked! I've made them sit through this way too many times over the decades, but this time around they were saying they could see things never seen before, and it felt like watching the film again for the very first time. I utterly agree!
THANKS Harmy - you've done a wonderful thing by bringing this film back the way it was, back in 1977. I'm sure this release will go down (officially or unofficially) in Star Wars history - along with the year 2012 - as being of great importance, along with -1s impending 35mm release too.
What a year to be an OT Star Wars fan! Life is good ;)

Check earlier in the thread re: Tatooine color timing. It is keyed to a '77 IB Tech print - that is how it should look. I didn't have any problems with stuttering, fwiw.
Also, in the future, please PM Harmy with questions about "errors" in the film. It could ruin it for somebody else if they didn't notice it.

This. Star Wars is a film from the seventees, and it should look like a movie from the seventees, just like Return of the Jedi is a movie from the eightees and it should look like a movie from the eightees. Strangely, Empire Strikes Back does not look like a movie from a certain age (or at least the official releases and Despecialized 1.0). Not sure why, but that's one of the reasons why ESB is my favorute OT movie.
And SW Despecialized 2.0 LOOKS like a movie from 1977. It does not have CGI bullshit. It does not have a strange color palette. It looks natural. It looks like a film, and that what I love about Harmy's new restoration. You are a wizard ;)
BTW, what's the source of -1's 35mm? If it isn't a Technicolor print, why not using the Technicolor print Harmy has (if the private collector who donated it allows you, of course)? That would be even more amazing. And if money is a problem, I would donate some bucks =)

I've never run across software that does that, although I haven't been looking for it in particular. Typically if you want two different languages at the same time, you have one dub with another subtitle. Other than that, no idea. If this is worth the effort to you, you could combine the two SRT files yourself into a combination subtitle file, I suppose, but it would be a lot of work.
Keep in mind that although I tried to keep all of my subtitles using the same timing whenever possible, they often do not--which means if you had two subs going simultaneously, dialogue would frequently get translated in one language before it got translated in another language, which could be a little weird looking.

I'm sorry, that wasn't really what I meant. I don't want two subs at the same time, I just want to be able to switch from Swedish subs and English subs, depending on who I watch the movie with.
Since you gotta rename the sub file I guess I can only have one sub file at the time?

You can mux the subtitles in the same way you muxed in the new audio and then choose between them in the file. The reason I didn't do this is that many standalone players (including mine) don't support muxed in subtitles with mkv and some only support a limited number of muxed in subtitles (usually much more limited than the number of subs offered here) but vast majority, if not all, of the players capable of playing mkv are able to display subs if they're named the same as the videofile. It also saved me a lot of work, having to tag all the subs for the language they are in mkv merge.
