But the strange thing is that the MD5 and SHA1 sums of torrented files should be 100% identical to the original files, since I think the P2P protocol handles checksums...

Just in case, I stopped seeding.

Wow, I love your despecialized mkv-version of Star Wars IV. Awesome picture-quality, and Han Solo shoots first and only and no added CGI, no Jabba appearing, planet and death star explodes like in the original, lightsabers have the right colour and glow... simply awesome restauration, Harmy!

There are not enough thank you's for this!

How much of the BD is left untouched? Or if you will, how much did you have to alter to get as close to the theatrical 77 edition as possible? Nevermind the color corrections

Around 300 shots were altered from the BD in some other way than just colour correction. I'm not sure about the actual percentage.

You can check 005's comparisons. All shots that were despecialized are tagged as such in the comments.

Just to clarify - when you say "shots," that means full camera scenes of 100+ frames, right?

Off topic: Harmy, do you mind if I put together that "Gout/Special Edition/V1.0/Remastered" comparison?

Correct.

Sure. I'm planning on doing one myself later but if you want to make one, it's fine with me :-)

Whoa, whoa. Could someone send me an invite to Myspleen along with a link to the correct version (don't want to be DL'ing the corrupt one.)

Yes.

Is there a nice looking movie poster any where for this version?

cool I can't wait to see them

One day we will have properly restored versions of the Original Unaltered Trilogy (OUT); or 1977, 1980, 1983 Theatrical released versions (Like 4K77,4K80 and 4K83); including Prequels. So that future generations can enjoy these historic films that changed cinema forever.

MeGUI might be the most powerful tool to make x264 encodings but sadly I must say that I have no idea how to tweak the settings to get the best results.

Well, I think nobody does.

The best results should come from these presets you can download.   I used the recommended  DXVA-HD-HQ preset recently with amazing results:

hmmm....correct me if im wrong, but it sounds like the blu ray version of 2.0 will be the MKV file with additional audio tracks and a menu?  if thats the case, i may be in trouble cuz I have a panasonic dmp bd60 and it doesnt play MKV.  I've been able to enjoy 1.0 because it was AVCHD but this time I wanted to take advantage of the full bit-rates.

maybe an excuse to get a new player ;P

in any event, I still feel great for fans that can enjoy this.

Harmy, it sounds like you really hit this one out of the park.

Fans everywhere are gonna raise a glass of blue milk to you.

I'll probably check in again in a couple months once the blu ray is released to get a better idea of where things are at.  In the meantime, congratulations on a job well done.  Congrats too on your thesis.  Best of luck again on your exams - im sure you'll do just fine.  You have an attitude and dedication to success thats rare.

Yes, the Bluray will use the same video track as the mkv, but include some lossless audio tracks, a menu and a few extras. You won't need an mkv capable player to get it working though, because when encoding the video track, we already made sure it was Bluray compatible.

If you don't want to wait for the official Bluray to be released or don't need lossless audio and menus, you can as well get the mkv version right away and simply create a BD out of it using TsMuxer.

Sounds good, but I didn't get it to work... when I put the MKV in tsMuxeR GUI to create a "Blu-ray disk" (per selection), I get an error code -2 "Matroska parse error: Invalid EBML number size 2 at pos 273027604"... any help?

It happens right at 1.4% progress, after the audio tracks are "decoded" as per the output window, and right when it says "B-pyramid level 1 detected. Shift DTS to 2 frames"

I've already muxed the corrected German and Spanish audio tracks into the MKV... could that be the cause?

Edit: Got it working now... Looks like ffdshow was the problem. I set its h.264 decoder to "deactivated" and now tsMuxeR seems to work. Veeeery slooowly though... I would've thought, since the video doesn't need to be re-transcoded, this would be relatively fast. But judging by the current percentage, this'll take over an hour.

I don't know in which way ffdshow could possibly interfere as it's a simple remux operation. Please try demuxing the mkv to elementary streams first. Install Mkvtoolnix and MkvExtractGUI2 and use latter tool to do the demuxing. Then import the video (.264) and audio tracks into tsMuxeR GUI and create a Bluray. Please leave out the subtitles first.

Ah well, I didn't demux first... but ffdshow was definitely the crux. It's running now, although probably taking a couple of hours still. As I'm heading to bed now anyway, I'll just leave it running. We'll see how that goes.

If it takes several hours then something is really wrong.

Well harmy, I've managed to watch this on my computer w/ 27" monitor, my bd player w/ 37" hdtv & I'm now copying it down to my iPad!  It looks amazing on everything so far, I can't stop watching it....

I just tried to create a BD with TsMuxer myself. Well, even without demuxing first it didn't throw any error and the resultant BD folder plays flawlessly with TMT5. The process took less than 30min to finish. However I don't have ffdshow installed...

You can also use ClownBD to convert an mkv to Bluray structure:  it's a GUI front-end to eac3to (for audio and demuxing), BDsup2sub (for subtitles) and TsMuxer (for muxing) used in the process.

For anyone interested, there are a couple of programs called easySUP/goSUP that can convert srt subtitles into Bluray compatible PGS form.  I also recall there being another utility that can force subtitles in Bluray structure, although I can't remember what it is called.

Just wanted to drop by and say congrats Harmy! You've done a top notch job as always! I'm downloading through Myspleen now. Can't wait to see the finished result. I watched version 1.0 last year and have been eagerly awaiting version 2.0.

Georgie boy has once again been beaten by the tireless efforts of this community. Makes you wonder what state Star Wars would be in these days if Lucas himself cared about the films as much as we do.
