The Secret History of Star Wars — Page 10

Thanks, I never knew that Lucas was so strongly influenced by Vietnam war. He used World War 2 aircraft dogfight clips as "animatics" for the spacefighter combat after all (surprising coincidence - fighters in X-Wing games fly at comparable speed to WW2 planes).

Interesting how the "point of sitting" defines the "point of view". The Vietnam war never came to my mind when watching Star Wars (OK, maybe only during the ROTJ jungle fight with Ewoks). It's quite natural for a person with European background to see Rebel Alliance as the resistance movement fighting against the Nazi Germany, using "hit and run" tactics, captured weapons, infiltration, espionage etc. Many of those Bothans died to bring us the V-1 plans, right?

I saw the original theatrical release of the Old Trilogy on the big screen and I'm proud of it...
How did I accomplish that (considering my age) is my secret...

I also see the Revolutionary war in star wars, but it may be applicability rather than outright allegory.  The rebels remind me of the American colonies, the empire the British crown.

The WW2 stuff though is definitely there in things like the guns, the uniforms the fascism of the empire.  Biggs mention of nationalizing commerce has to be a direct reference to the Nazi's sadly that scene was cut.

“Always loved Vader’s wordless self sacrifice. Another shitty, clueless, revision like Greedo and young Anakin’s ghost. What a fucking shame.” -Simon Pegg.

You don't have to be a Nazi to be a friend to nationalisation.

I don't get the US war of independence vibe.

It's more Roman if anything (a former Republic turned into a despotic Empire backed by a formidable war machine).

The Republic seems to be full of respected aristocrats where as the Princess during the Imperial period is a rebel on the run.

So if anything it's more like the European Civil Wars in that regard.

Lucas was going to direct  Apocalypse Now early in his career. (The somewhat crazy plan was to actually shoot in Vietnam while the war was still on.) Coppola wasn't able to get that version off the ground, and ultimately made the movie himself.

Lucas referenced his involvement with A.N. (although not by name) when discussing the concept of a primitive culture taking down a technologically superior one in the Star Wars to Jedi documentary.

I watched the first four installments the other night. Quite cool to see and hear you for real, Zombie!

In regards to the "What will they do with the EU" question, I think they'll simply set Episode VII at whenever they're at now in the books (40 years after ROTJ). Even if it blatantly ignores everything that's happened, they can at least retcon certain things easier than just saying "oh yeah, by the way, Episodes VII VIII and IX happened only 20 years after Jedi and the characters just NEVER mentioned it afterward."

Does anyone else think replacement Hayden when you see this chap ?:

I have a friend who looks more like him but I'd imagine he would be just as wrong for different reasons.

Honestly stick him in a Jedi mullet and get him to say sensible lines to Nat Portman.

Congrats on the new show Zombie! I checked out the episodes and I think you need to be doing your own show.  The other guys are not as knowledgeable and just look to you as the guru!

Hey that's pretty cool, good job. It's kind of amazing that it's now possible to have what amounts to a sunday morning current events discussion show, but about Star Wars.

If that happens, I will commit metaphorical murder/suicide.

This was under my tree this morning!

It's the kindle version.  I don't have a kindle, but I do have an android phone with the kindle app and I'm more than happy to read it on my phone.

Cheers, zombie!

Nicely done, sir!  Bookmarked and following.  Also, a tip of the cap to the set.  Fitting, but not an overdone distraction.

Long story short, it was purchased and then burned to CD or DVD (not sure which).  I still have to put it on my PC.

How often do you update the book?

And maybe old news but in the news today, figured our Encyclopedist would certainly know.

I use the link to a page of the link because that's where I saw it, and there are some interesting comments, like one linking to a professor's pseudo-historical Norwegian version of Star Wars.

1) I don't update the book since it is now printed. We published it in November 2008, and did an small update in January 2009 to correct some typos that slipped through. A full-on second edition of the book, with updated info and some minor tweaking has been in the works for years now and is unofficially coming out in 2013.

2) That Vogue link is very, very interesting. I'm still not sure if it is coincidence or not but it certainly gives one pause. Thanks for sharing it! I'll be posting it on Facebook to see what people think.

Interesting, but a bunch of old movie serials had that sort of text crawl.
