don't worry, we plan to spread it out

much like harmy has done with his

latest project. newsgroups, torrents,

and file sharing sites.

just have to make sure

that the files are not corrupted. that

seems to be an issue at times.

There's 35mm footage in his latest release ;)

But I was only joking.

By the way, could you guys do something extra-nice and include instructions on how to properly burn the film to a DVD/Bluray? I don't do it often, and I keep forgetting how to do it every time I burn a new release. Besides I think I'm not alone in this matter.

The blog was set up a while ago.  It was eventually archived and closed once it seemed that most of the significant developments had already happened.

ok, hopefully we'll have some more

to talk about next week.

we'll wrap up notes from this thread.

although feel free to keep posting

here for general talk and

other 35mm related issues, technical or not..

we'll start a new 35mm thread dedicated

just for the star wars release. i'll try to make

it just about the main points ; who/what/where/when/why?

and that should get everybody up to speed and

ready when the time comes, so you don't have

to keep digging through this one just to find something out.

major thanks to zombie84 and all the others that

started this 6 years ago, and came up with all the

major thoughts and ideas..

not sure why that would be needed.

one of the formats will be the files

you need to burn straight to bluray.

i use nero, just add files to bluray folders-> burn . done.

there will also be a dual layer dvd image, same thing,

use nero (or whatever) -> dvd folders -> burn. done.

for the .mkv with the larger picture, it's not meant to

be burned to a disc, it will be for people who use

their projectors with a laptop or computer. i guess

you could burn it also. but why?

--------------------------------------------------------------------

anyways, all this technical talk, and all the talk

in harmy's thread should be moved over to here:

==================================

the how-to and technical forum.

USE IT!

that way people won't keep asking, and having issues,

solving problems etc.

i'll check on this thread once in awhile..

feel free to continue talking about the

35mm versions and technical stuff,

queries, ideas and conjectures..

but once the new thread starts up,

it'll just be updates about star wars

over there..

interesting north carolina has technicolor sw,

70mm empire, and jedi!

we still don't have a solid plan.. it's just way too much data

for most people to deal with.. buying drives, and shipping

drives is going to be expensive.. i'm lucky i was near the

people, and could just hand deliver most of the stuff..

Usenet? 100+ Mbit flats aren't too expensive for most providers and the better ones offer like 4 years of retention. If you released the rared raw images reel by reel archives shouldn't be too large, right? Of course it would take quite a long time to upload I can image.

that might be the best and only possible way.

however, someone is going to have dedicate a lot

of time and bandwidth to upload several terabytes.

has anyone had experience with anything at this level?

how did people deal with the wookiegroomer 1080p

releases way back when? those are the only huge

releases i can think of..

Well, my largest upload was Harmy's Despecialized Edition Remastered MKV and I have quite a slow connection, so that's not really a reference. However, I've seen people uploading untouched BDs of a tv show season, which comes in at 200+ GB, with a speed of several MByte/sec.

So if you know somebody nearby with a fast fibre optical connection...

this is still several times that in size!

so unless someone wants to do this..

also, think of the end results.. i'm not trying

to dissuade people, but sharing it is going

to clutter up the newsgroup, and with the

end result of just a few people using it.

again, i mentioned pooling your resources,

sharing the costs, and shipping is probably

the only realistic way to go in the end.

I agree that it'd be difficult, but I might have the resources to upload/share this. Let's speak (in private, of course) when you get closer to releasing.

remember, how did it go

with the X0/X9 raw releases.

i think only one or two people used

those to make anything out of it...

that's why i'm wondering in the end

if there will still be interest. it's going

to take a long time to copy on my end

also!

You're right in that only a few people made good use of the X9 and X0 raw captures and I do know and acknowledge that it'd take a long time and effort to copy on your end.

I don't want to push the issue, but with that being said, I think there's value in having the raw capture(s) available. Neither you nor I know what the future will hold, but several things are certain:

  1. Computers will continue to get faster and, in consequence, more capable of handling computationally-intense jobs that we can only dream of tackling today.
  2. Software will continue to get more advanced.
  3. The films will deteriorate.

Somebody in the next 5 years might come along with some advanced piece of software (e.g., PFClean), radically-fast hardware, and a burning desire to clean the living hell out of Star Wars. The raw captures would really help this hypothetical fortunate and resourceful person.

I think it's a matter of preservation... you busted your ass to digitize these films!

I have to agree. I think that by as many people having the raw files as possible, that the "preservation factor" is the most it can be. It's like some of the studio audio files and bootlegs that leak occasionally; once they're out there, their rarity is diminished. Also, who would've thought even 5 or 6 years ago that a slightly large download would be 16gb? I think that as time goes on, the ability to download huge files will become more commonplace.
