I thought it was, I'll wait to see more comparisons.

One day we will have properly restored versions of the Original Unaltered Trilogy (OUT); or 1977, 1980, 1983 Theatrical released versions (Like 4K77,4K80 and 4K83); including Prequels. So that future generations can enjoy these historic films that changed cinema forever.

Ok here's a couple random ones from each movie.

Some of you might not even see the difference, but I can tell you it's there, especially if layering the images on each other and switching on/off. The saturation was originally increased using Satmask in avisynth, and was taken down to 75% using Satmask again. And of course, the yellows are more correct now too.

I think you've nailed the colours, You_Too.  I'm very picky regarding the hues and saturation levels in the Star Wars films, and to my eyes they now look perfect.  In particular, I find the skin tones to be perfectly saturated now, and white surfaces no longer have an overly-green hue to them (Luke's shirt in the Hoth medical centre and Leia's suit in the Falcon's cockpit are prime examples).  I trust this will result in less greenish-whites in the corridors of the Tantive IV as well?

Excellent job dude!

@pat man: Yeah, watching on a calibrated screen is the best thing to do if you want to see how it really looks.

Unfortunately, most people who will watch this probably don't have calibrated TVs or projectors, but hopefully it will look good to them as well since the colors are pretty neutral overall.

@pat man: Not to criticize your new topic there, but what you list in the first post is not a real calibration, it's basic setup.

Calibration means using a colorimeter, spectroradiometer or similar to set the grayscale and each primary and secondary color to the reference, which for grayscale is D65 and colors is Rec 709.

Also, one cannot trust gamma being 2.2 even if the TV says so. Gamma is usually very unevenly divided over the grayscale.

That said, doing the basic setup usually improves things a lot and takes you much closer to a calibration, but there is still no way for you to know if what you're watching looks correct.

IMHO this is how the OT is suppose to look (ignoring the limitations of the GOUT!) :D

I agree 100%.

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

Still pictures are fine but will it hold up while in motion?  Now I know I'm a noob when it comes to color correction and such but since these movies are already all across the board when it comes to source prints I'd think one would still have to go frame by frame to make something like this work properly, correct?

I do like the look of the comparisons but the science of the process is mind boggling to me....LOL.

Huge thanks to all working so hard to make these versions possible for everyone to enjoy.

Cheers

Yes, it looks great in motion too. :)

Considering the source being the GOUT, of course. While it looks much more HD-like, the smearing is still there. That's something we'll have to live with.

It may not as crisp as the bluray but defiantly better than broadcast TV or VHS tape! Which is the way most have watched the non SE's. I even think it superior to standard DVD's.

And can we even call this a GOUT project anymore? Its miles better than the GOUT!

PS. The snapshots do look very nice. Hurry up and getter done already, wink wink...

This is going to be such a cool set to watch...you guys have taken the GOUT which is a faded jagged low res mess and made something special.

I grew up watching some TV broadcast recordings on VHS in 4:3 pan & scan, so this sure is a nice upgrade for the original unaltered trilogy!

I wouldn't say it's superior to standard DVDs though. Since the source has so much jagged edges, it can still be seen a little even if downscaling it to DVD resolution, even though they've been greatly reduced.

I really do wish we could just clap our hands and it'd be ready. :)

Unfortunately it's such a long process with all the cleanup. I think that's necessary though, because the contrast and colors have been increased so much that all the downsides are also much more visible.

Agreed....I think it is miles above the home video "versions" we've all been subjected to over the years.

Cheers for ALL the hard work....it does pay off.

The question is: do they have to be? Can't we all just "post a forum"? :-D

I know You-Too and DJ are not using the 35mm but I would like you to please look a the non-faded 1977 Technicolor 35mm print.Maybe this is what people are talking about the colors.

As late as last page in this thread, I explained why the GOUT can't be corrected to look like the original prints.

Of course I would want it to look like the technicolor print but it's impossible since the colors are not separated from each other in a way that would allow that color correction.
