With regards to Vertigo, I agree that it is slow at times, but the psychological damage of our character and the obsessive tragedies he experiences are quite fascinating to me.  The moment when Stewart holds Novak in his arms, looks around seeing the Spanish mission...powerful stuff IMO.  I think a big draw for the film is Hermann's score.  He's an amazing composer.

I've thought of resurrecting the old soundtrack thread, and if I did, I'd definitely have Bernard Hermann as one of my favorite movie composers of all time.

Hitchcock shouldn't have discarded the supernatural vibes so early in the film, IMHO.

Take Shelter (2011).

Dreamlike illustration of a crumbling psyche or modern retelling of the Noah myth?

Some viewers have been quick to leap to the rational end of the pool with the story but it's entirely open ended and open to interpretation and reinterpretation.

I look forward to seeing it again in that regard.

The cast work perfectly, the CGI is the only letdown.

For the film to really work the more bizarre imagery needs to look as naturalistic as possible and sometimes it looks a bit too 'shopped'.

The Babymakers

To be honest I expected a lot more from these guys, Previous efforts have been a lot of fun but this film feels really flat in a lot of places.

1 ball.

The Hunger Games

Saw the first half while out and about visiting friends, I reserve judgement until I've seen the whole thing but there's already things I like and don't like - and I'm sort of biased against it through my love of Battle Royale.

The Avengers

Still a fun action movie.

Margin Call

Great movie but I really wasn't in the mood when I saw it so it's kind of hard to put a value on it.

There is nothing else like it. Hopefully Robert Harris will be able to fully complete his 1998 restoration with modern tools as he has stated would be ideal. And the 5.1 mix is beyond atrocious. Despite the dropouts and hiss, the 5th gen mono track on the MC DVD is essential. i still feel like the restoration has never been ported to disc quite well as it could, and even RH has admitted they did the best they could with the color but it isn't fully accurate.

The 1998 Restoration is such an unfortunate mixed bag. Video wise, though it is remarkably clean, the color's don't look accurate, compared to an old VHS I bought in a rummage sale. As for the audio, that's a disaster. The 5.1 pulls far too much attention to itself, and the mono is much preferable. Luckily, I managed to sync the mono from the MC DVD to a 1080i HDTV rip I downloaded.

I am excited that I'll be seeing this in 70mm this month! Hopefully, the picture will make the audio more bearable.

It's definitely more bearable theatrically. I saw a 35mm screening a few years back that was this way, though 70mm will have the full DTS 70mm 5.0 which is reputed to be mindblowing for the usage of the score's master tapes.

Yeah, I've got to get the old LD just to see the old color but keep in mind these would all likely be based off the 1983 reissue prints which were all deteriorated and themselves not correct.

I also hate watching Rear Window on DVD because its so incredibly grainy and this manifests as video noise. The MC and Legacy discs are RH approved as represent their work well, but sometimes I think the smoother and more colored first DVD might be preferable.

I really hope the new Blu-rays can pull these two titles out of the muck and actually present them well on home video, but it's all going to be from the already stuck masters so they'll probably just look more detailed.

I like it. Full of atmosphere, foggy streets and a dank old castle.

Eveything you expect from a Roger Corman/Vincent Price film.

The beautiful Debra Paget and the legend that is Lon Chaney Jr are an added bonus.

So I saw Serentiy a long time ago by recommendation of a friend.  I saw it again fairly recenlty and enjoyed it, but had never seen Firefly.  Well, we recently bought it for $20 at Wal-mart and have been watching it.  It has great humor, fun action, and interesting niche in the sci-fi and Western genres...and far too much sexuality.  Yes, you all probably think I'm a prude, but it gets tiresome.  The most interesting stuff has been the cleanest so far.  My favorite episode thus far has been Ariel, a frightening episode with those creepy blue hand guys.  And there was no sex at all.  That's what the show should have been all along.  Anyway, minus the sex, I really am enjoying it, and it's nice to see the characters of Serenity fleshed out (no pun intended).

I've always been curious as to how well Serenity plays for someone who hadn't seen the series. It's very unique, being able to tell the closing of a television story while also being entertaining to a general audience.

This is why Joss got Avengers.

I agree.  I'm really impressed that he could write a film that was both a sequel to a TV series and a standalone film.  Enough detail was included in the film and enough attention to the characters provided that I could watch it with serious enjoyment.  I think I mostly found myself confused by Inara and didn't even feel the emotion of Shepherd Book's death, but other than that, I could follow the film just fine.

Yes, I'm very impressed with Whedon's storytelling and dialogue writing abilities.  He's a talented man who did a great job with Avengers.

I saw the film first and it worked perfectly, the film was more lachrymatory re-watching it after the show.

Not just because I knew the characters better but also because I wanted to know them more and I knew I would not be allowed to. Stupid Fox was stupid.

I felt the same re-watching the sole season of Caprica again recently.

I have a feeling I'll not enjoy many of the plot points and character development that was already settled before upon my next viewing.  However, I think I'll still enjoy it.  But ultimately I clicked "reply with quote" so I could highlight your greatest truth.  How could they cancel such an interesting show?  Were the ratings really that bad?  The show has so much potential.  I really wanted to see more of the guys with the blue gloves, but I have a feeling there will never be much more development of those two.  Still have four more episodes to go, so I guess we'll see.

Fox killed Firefly the same way they killed Futurama: they changed it's timeslot around, didn't give it enough promotion, and aired the episodes out of order. The awesome Pilot was actually showed close to last. They didn't even air the last three or four episodes, period! It's no wonder it wasn't performing to their expectations.

Someone at Fox must have really liked King of The Hill, or Mike Judge had blackmail photos of someone. ;)

There were times when they would air back to back episodes in Futurama's timeslot.

That's the same problem I had with the show.

I think you might be a bit of a prude, probably the rude bit but I definitely felt that way about Torchwood, only I thought without the sex it was generally a load of bobbins too.

Children Of Earth was good though.

Maybe you're right, Bingo.  If there's something we don't see enough of in modern media, it's sex.  Every TV program is so cliched, except those that show a little somethin'-somethin'. [/end sarcasm; cue winking smiley]

;)

In all seriousness, many a program has gotten along fine without it, and as this is a site with lots of fanediting going on, there are several cases where I've considered, "Hmm, if I simply excised that scene, no one would even notice."  But the plot and humor keep me coming back to these episodes, and I've got two to go.  Then the movie (which I don't think was nearly as sexual).  And I think I'll try to read the interquel comics while I'm at it.
