good luck on your exams.

One day we will have properly restored versions of the Original Unaltered Trilogy (OUT); or 1977, 1980, 1983 Theatrical released versions (Like 4K77,4K80 and 4K83); including Prequels. So that future generations can enjoy these historic films that changed cinema forever.

I'm not taking a breather at all, I'm studying for my final exams that take place on the 5th September and I definitely don't plan to start any work until after that :-)

And I don't really need to find bonus content as much as create it :-)

Here's the plan for the BD:

Animated Menu (similar to the sample I posted some time ago)

Same video for the main feature as the MKV

All the same soundtracks and subtitles as the MKV but the original three English mixes in lossless and maybe the 93 mix as well and maybe some of the other AC3s in higher bitrate.

A short making of video (HD)

A trailer (HD)

The v1.0 comparison gallery (the one on picasaweb)

New comparison gallery (comparing SE, GOUT, v1.0 and v2.0)

A video comparison of the despecialized shots (1080p) (comparing SE, GOUT, v1.0 and v2.0 - the above gallery will comprise of screenshots from this video)

At least one easter egg (I have something really fun in mind, though I could use help of someone with musical talent)

I'm open to other suggestions of course but I can't promise anything.

As you can see, it will take some time to finish the BD but it should be worth the wait :-)

 That sounds fucking amazing man.

Yeah, I hope I'll be able to do it all the way I want.

Anway, ww12345 offered his help with my musical thingy, so I should be all set for the Easter egg :-)

Sweet! Of course I won't be waiting till then to watch the 2.0, but the BD is gonna be totally epic!

Harmy, you are the man for doing all this.  I'm blown away by all the quality work you've done.  You're making a lot of SW fans very happy.

I can't wait for the BD.  Are you definitely going to have an isolated score?  I humbly request its inclusion, as well as the 1993 laserdisc commentary.

Thanks again, and good luck on your exams!

Anyone remember different camera angles from ROTJ?

Author

If I can get the 1993 commentary, I'd like to include it. And I decided to include both the editdroid and belbucus iso score tracks.

Wow, Harmy.  That's pretty fantastic.

So, to repose the question from a few weeks ago, if the stakes are a date with a 22-year old Carrie Fisher, and she'll be sober (or at least not-coked out of her mind) for the duration of the date, would you bet that this will be released on or before the 28th of August 2012?

I'm not sure if this is at all feasible, but one thought I've just had, for the sake of those of us that don't want to wait, but are interested in the eventual blu ray, is there any way to provide the blu ray files minus the video, and then just add it back in from the mkv?

@i551: I'm not sure. It might be possible - as far as I know, unless there's seemless branching, the film is stored on the disc in one m2ts file, so it may theoretically be possible to simply remove it from the finished BD, upload what's left and then you'd remux the mkv to m2ts with TS Muxer, rename it to the same as what the video file was on the BD and add it into the stream folder on the BD. It would however have to be done very precisely what with all the audio and subtitle options planned and even then I couldn't guarantee that it would work.

@d_o_g (lol, nice initials): Could I actually have her drugged out of her mind instead? But joking aside, it is very very likely, though I still haven't finished watching the whole thing but since the glitch in the previous encode was in the source files and wasn't cause by the encoding, it's improbable that there should be any problems.

Thanks.  I wanted a username that was Star Wars related, but I wanted it to work as an acronym too.

Anyway, given that Carrie was apparently drugged out of her mind for most of ESB and ROTJ and turned in strong performances in each, maybe you wouldn't even notice the difference.

Now that you know the stakes, would you bet things are still on for a release on (before???) the 28th?  I feel like my question jinxed the project last time I asked, but somehow I can't resist asking again.

I can't give you a more accurate answer than I already have but if the stakes were what you propose, I'd take that bet :-)

Author

Wow, that's going to be one swelluva blu-ray. I will gladly wait for that (and maybe gives me enough time to find someone who can burn a blu-ray!)

Harmy, I am just so unbelievably glad and thankful.

This release is looking more official by the minute! Looking forward to the BD release.

Although it is not explicitly summarised in the thread, my interpretation of the release sequence is as follows:

1. mkv - 16GB 720p mkv, movie only

2. AVCHD - 8.5GB 720p basic Bluray structure, movie only

3. Bluray - 25GB 720p advanced Bluray structure, movie with extras

Corrections to this view welcomed.

Since the AVCHD will be about half the size of the mkv, then the mkv will be higher quality?

ClownBD can convert mkv-->M2TS-->Bluray without transcoding loss.

M2TS has an additional timestamp field designed for random access in PVRs, players etc, so theoretically has more stable navigation than TS or even mkv.  It is curious that some members mention mkv as being better, but perhaps it comes down to the (limited) implementation of M2TS in the players.

That's correct :-)

Also, I got the 93 commentary from Krycek87, thanks :-) It only has the comments in a few places throughout the movie and otherwise there's no sound at all, so I took the 93 mix (it seemed the most appropriate choice, as it's from the same LD release) and filled the silence with it, only lowering it's volume to barely audible where there were the comments and made it into a 192Kbps AC3.

Everything is ready now, except for the audio tracks from hairy_hen, so I want to start uploading tomorrow.

One correction.  I doubt the blu-ray will be true 1080p.  720p as far as I can tell.

Good call on the commentary track, makes it even more official!

Also, schorman13 did all the work on the commentary track. I just nabbed it from his recent laserdisc audio archive release.

Yeah, Harmy has said this will be 720p... due to the constraints of his hardware and it being designed to suit a single layer BD 25.

That being said - given the fact that the highest quality available source (for most scenes) is the BD which is sourced from an "older" 2004 master, the drop in picture quality won't be all that noticeable with decent compression. The retail BD itself isn't (as in it doesn't appear to be) "true" 1080p either (even though resolution doesn't apply to film as such) relative to other films transferred from much more recent masters (Braveheart, Jaws, Blade Runner, etc.) The data itself is 1920X1080 24p on the Blu Ray, "true 1080p," but that doesn't speak to the actual amount of detail that can be discerned as it plays back. Film has a very high potential resolvable resolution, much more than 1080p, but when the most current master was struck for Star Wars (over 8 years ago) technology was far behind where it is today, so its current BD transfer is hardly on the bleeding edge of visual fidelity. I doubt any significant amount of fine detail will be lost in downconverting this to 720p given the state of the BD.

When dealing with film, "true" 1080p on BD is completely relative - it's purely a marketing term. The Thin Red Line (unbelievable picture quality) and Tomb Raider (shit on a stick) are both "true" 1080p per se on BD in that they're both 1920X1080 24p. Tomb Raider looks horrendous on the medium even though it was shot in the not so distant past; it appearing so soft and flawed was not part of its design as it was being shot (as is the case with some films like Lost in Translation) either, it's the fact that its master is old and sucks dick... Not like a new master would improve Tomb Raider anyway, fucking terrible movie.

Oh, yeah, I didn't notice that in his post, the BD will be 720p of course - same video track as the mkv. There is a certain amount of fine detail lost of course but considering that the resolution is about half (921600 pixels for a 720p frame and 2073600 pixels for a 1080p frame) the amount of detail lost is quite small - it has to be for the reasons mentioned by Stinky-Dinkins. It also helps the other sources blend better, since in 720p their resolution is met half way with that of the BD.

A few more things would make this BD PERFECT :

- a cleaned-up version of the deleted scenes - I know a couple of people are working on them (althor ?), maybe they could help with it ?

- A making-of featurette (about the movie, not about this release :-))

We'll see :-)

Anyway, to give you an idea of the amount of detail, here's a screenshot comparison between the DeEd v2.0 mkv encode and the actual Blu-Ray, the BD is at it's native resolution, the 720p DeEd screenshot has been simply resized to 1080p in photoshop:
