Did it hurt us? What worked for almost thirty years is suddenly bad for you?

Exactly!!
Jimbo thats what im saying..
we've been watching it this way all these years... whats the difference if you change the order now?

Today I have no order since I now don't own the Star Wars trilogy. I recently sold me Special Edition Pan scan tapes at a garage sale. My tapes of the orginals wore out a long time ago and the scratches are to distracting to watch. But I do already have the DVDs preordered for only $34.99. I can't wait to watch all movies in story order.

The dramastructure/storytelling of those movies is made to work at its best if you watch them 4,5,6,1,2,3 (unintentionally I guess, since Lucas really wants us to watch them in numerical order!). But now he´s going around and trying to damage that as well, messing up the important plottwists and turns from the original trilogy so he can make one big, rather boring saga with no surprises and a rather childish structure were everything has to be "knocked into" the audience - a forgone conclusion really! He should really come to his senses and release the original trilogy unaltered on DVD for those of us who consider that to be the real story, he should then just meddle, change and mess up his own "definitive versions" to work best with his prequel trilogy. He should really do that.

but jimbo im saying you saw the SW trilogy the way we all did...
4,5,6,1,2,3
and you loved the movies right?
so will you love them anymore if you watch them 1,2,3,4,5,6?

Yes actually. I will love them even more.

Well, for all those who already know the original trilogy, it really does not matter that much in which order we watch them, I suppose (a mere matter of personal preferrence). Yet I still think the only way to watch them for someone who has never ever seen anything StarWars, should be 4,5,6,1,2,3.

In fact I will certainly do the 1,2,CW,3,4,5,6 marathon myself.

I totally agree. If I introduce anybody to Star Wars, I'll make sure to show them Episodes IV - VI before I - III. There a bunch of surprises in the original trilogy that will already be ruined if someone watches the prequel trilogy first (such as that little green frog man really being a great Jedi Master, Darth Vader being Luke's father (although I think everybody knows that one), Luke and Leia being brother and sister (most likely, we haven't seen Episode III yet so Lucas might have managed to keep it a secret for people who watch it I - VI for the first time, but I doubt it), and so on). Also, when people watch the original trilogy first, they'll hear about a ton of stuff like the Clone Wars, the rise of the Empire and so on and wonder about it and just imagine what those could be like. If they've seen the prequels first, they'll already know about it and will just be like "yeah, yeah, we know how it goes, already!" when they hear about that stuff in the original trilogy. Also, some stuff that's very well explained in the original trilogy such as Jedi Knights, the Force, etc. aren't explained in much detail in the prequels and it'll probably confuse people who watch them first.

I definitely agree that 4/5/6/1/2/3 will most likely be the best order but I am going to wait until episode 3 comes out to decide that for sure. Watching them in their new order obviously ruins many surprises that the original trilogy has but it does contain new surprises instead. While it is clear that Anakin is heading in a bad direction it would still be a surprise to see just how much of a bad-ass he will end up being. It will also be a surprise to watch the Jedi go down big time in ROTS, and watching the main good guy Obi-Wan die midway through Episode 4. Other surprises hinge on how the script is for ROTS but (and I sincerely doubt it) he could actually keep the birth of Leia a secret, like you mentioned. If he does this then I would gain alot of respect for him because that will really help out his argument that the running order should be 1/2/3/4/5/6. Also he needs to have some action take place on Alderaan because then it would be a shock to see it destroyed in Star Wars. One final surprise he could do that would be nice is to leave the final outcome of Yoda in question so that although it wouldn't be shocking that the frog is a jedi warrior, it would at least be a surprise to see that he is still alive.

So basically if Lucas does it right I think both orders will have many surprises that seem very foreshadowed and obvious to us Star Wars veterans but will be cool for young people who haven't figured out exactly how fairy tales work. Also when watched in episode order each episode will be better than the one before it (cough, until Jedi that is).

Either way the original trilogy needs to be OFFICIALLY released on DVD yesterday!

I like 7,8,9, the star wars TV show, and the lost cut of episode 4. Oh yeah and the lost versions of the PT that don't suck.
16 years I wait and this is what I get???

if George wanted people to watch episodes 1-6 in correct order , he should have made them that way to begin with.

Both Alderaan and Leia's birth are seen in 3.
I realy don't think that fat head Lucas is bothering to keep anything a secret anymore.

Sorry if this is a bit offtopic, but I was wondering if someone here could possibly download
THIS 2 minutes clip from ROTJ (.avi) and turn it into a quicktime file (.mov) for me, then e-mail it to me.
