Raiders of The Lost Ark in IMAX!

Literally soiled my pants when I saw this. I was hoping Fathom would rerelease this ahead of the Blu-ray, but this is... just WOW. I can not wait. I don't know if I'm busy that week, but if I am I will make myself un busy no matter what.

How are they going to make this work? IMAX letterboxed 2.35 Dark Knight style, or a blowup to fill the 1.44 screen?

This will be interesting to say the least.

"Mr. Spielberg, who with the sound designer Ben Burtt supervised the conversion of “Raiders of the Lost Ark” to Imax, said that no special effects or other visual elements of the film were changed. The audio, he said, had been enhanced for surround sound: “When the boulder is rolling, chasing Indy through the cave, you really feel the boulder in your stomach, the way you do when a marching band passes by, and you’re standing right next to it.”

Instead of an undoubtedly pristine 1080p conversion, would you like your next Raiders of the Lost Ark viewing to be in 70mm on an IMAX screen? So would I. Steven Spielberg is here to provide such a service, with ScreenCrush telling us the director has personally supervised such a presentation for Dr. Jones’ inaugural screen adventure, which will run from September 7th toSeptember 13th. Or, three-and-a-half weeks from now.

The website isn't telling me if this coming to Canada. Does anyone know if it is?

And, IMO, it will likely have the IMAX format cropped to accomodate the 2.35 AR. I mean, for a limited release in select cities for die-hards? Why would they screw around with the film? They aren't appealing to a mainstream crowd here.

I would want to see Raiders 4k restoration in 70mm original as it was originally released.

Not imax screen format i mean 70mm 2:20:1.

IMAX doesn't crop films to fit it's aspect ratio. The films are just left as they are in pretty much every case these days, with mattes for the empty areas. 70mm on the other hand cropped the films to a 2:20 ratio, so you lost about 10% of the picture area.

How come attack of the clones was like a zoomed in image then and pan and scanned?

Never saw it in IMAX but I would venture it was the same reason that it had a two hour limit, in that it was one of the first IMAX conversions ever done. Besides which, it would not surprise me if that was justr the way AOTC was and the IMAX format made it obvious: one of the reasons Lucas liked the not-ready-for-prime-time HD television cameras that they shot the film with was because he liked to blow up the image and do in-frame zooms and pans, which are in a million damn scenes in the film, and he felt HD gave better leeway rather than film. He said he was able to artificially blow up the image and do digital pan and scans 20% more than with film. He was basically nuts in all his opinions regarding digital video photography in the year 2000 when the movie was put to camera. So, without having any real frame of reference, my first instinct is to say it was just the movie itself. For anyone who worked in cinematography (eg me) AOTC is a complete clusterfuck, but then a lot of the movie is like that.

Really? San Diego, but not LA? A surprise, but not an unwelcome one. Then again, I know the multiplex they're showing it at and it's pretty awful. First world problems, folks.

We bought some tickets today, and me and my friend are going all the way down to Denver to see it. Seeing Raiders in a theatre has always been a dream of mine, so seeing it will certainly be a very thrilling experience for me.

Also, 3000th post!

Looks like no Canadian dates. Sometimes they just don't announce them on American websites though. Waiting with hope!

They must be adding locations gradually.  There were no Houston theaters when this was first announced (just Dallas).  Now there are two here that will be showing it.

Yeah too bad it looks like my theater is only showing DLP and not film.  Sorry but i will stay home.

It will look no better than the Blu Ray.

Trying to confirm if the Imax is real imax and on film or just digital.  As i would still go see raiders instead of the 4 film presentation if so.

Saw DKR on DLP and it is garbage.  Overly soft picture was worse than most blu rays i have seen.

You mean you won't even go just to see Raiders in theaters again?

Odd that Raiders was on SciFi today. You'd think there would not be any tv showings this close to the Blu Ray release.

The local revival house had it scheduled for early August, and bumped it back to late September. I'm amazed they can still get a print of it.

It's almost certainly the new 35mm print I saw, and the one that is still touring art houses nationwide. Odd that it will still be out at the time of the IMAX release.

Hey, somebody took some video of the presentation I saw...never thought about being able to sneak a camera in there, it's always way too dark to see in front of your face.

As you can see, this thing is incredibly clean and BRIGHT, BRIGHT, BRIGHT!! It is so bright that at first you have to blink for a minute to adjust. Sound is upfront and generally unimpressive but not bad, just like we've heard on the DVD for years.

I'm still unsure how this will look any better blown up. Even on this you could see some flaws and the work was only 4K anyway.

The film is not playing at the NYC Lincoln Square 13 (15-70, not DLP), which is still playing "The Dark Knight Returns" on its IMAX screen, and I haven't actually been able to confirm that it's playing on 15-70, well, anywhere. Granted there are, what, < 100 such screens worldwide? But the other IMAX-equipped theaters close by either say nothing about it (Liberty Science Center) or it's unclear what the format is (the New Rochelle theater has both DLP and 15-70).

I'm planning on seeing it next wk regardless at the Empire 25, because come on, it's Raiders, and I've never seen it in a theater before. There are screenings now and again at some of the smaller theaters but I almost always miss them. The 35mm was at the last Monday night Bryant Park movies event, but as we're Not In College Anymore getting a seat is a hassle, and the audio/video quality is awful - it's more of a social outing than anything else, often enough. Good way to discover old movies though.

I've never seen DLP IMAX but I've had my expectations duly lowered by all the negative fanfare.

I haven't been disappointed by my local digital IMAX yet. Go in with an open mind, and have a good time!

I saw this Saturday morning. My dad was in town visiting and we surprised him by taking him and not telling what we were seeing until we arrived at the theater.  We both saw it back in 1981 in theaters.

First, to confirm some questions stemming from the Last Movie Seen thread as well as this one...

The movie i saw had no snake reflection and had the original cliff shot. Also, while the aspect ratio was correct (as expected, but this was brought up by a poster), they didn't matte the top and bottom of the screen with any curtain or whatever they use.

During the South America scenes, the picture seemed to be unstable (for lack of a better term) at moments. I wasn't sure if it was simply out of focus (and wondered about focus with digital projection*) or a result of digital squirelliness/artifacts.  But then it was clearly affecting only parts of the image, and was obviously artifactual. That really bummed me out, although it either improved over time or I became absorbed in the film and didn't notice.

So, while I certainly enjoyed the experience of sitting in a theater with my daughter and my father who are both big fans of this movie, I think i was a bit miffed that this screening cost more than if it had been a 35mm presentation which likely would have looked better.

*according to the Cinetopia website, "Digital projectors are focused by a computer and then locked in to perfect focus show after show"... FWIW.

I has this problem too.  and some other shots - like the DC shot towards the end of the movie were pretty blurry.  based on what i've ben reading from other poeple that have watched them, this is an issue with the movie.  I missed the cobra reflection but i heard its gone.  but bellocq still eats the fly!!!  everyone laughed at this!!  BWAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

unfortunately it was also in one of those mini-IMAXX theatres.  I guess the 15/70 imax is gonna be obsolete.  My theatre was not even half-full.  so not sure if it was worth $15.

but its still a great flick after all these years (31 YEARS !?!?!?). Its still the best action-adventure film made, IMO. The story is a lot thinner than I remember and maybe the sequence with the Bomber plane can be viewed as filler, but at least it doesnt have stupid stuff like KOTCS and there is actual danger and grit to the action.  and karen allen is just soooo cute in this movie ;)

not gonna get the blu ray until its individually released.  Loved Indy the action hero, but the series overall is average.  TOD has aged poorly and dont care for KOTCS.
