The Ewok subplot of ROTJ was originally conceived of with wookies, and can be seen in early form in the rough draft of Star Wars from 1974. It's in Splinter of the Mind's Eye, as well. But it's also in the first draft of Empire Strikes Back, by Leigh Brackett.
