...made of WIN. This really is one of the coolest things ever. How else can one approximate a bygone experience like this? Thanks so much Puggo for all your hard work!

Distributing copyrighted materials is not tolerated.  I will need to find out the addresses of people who would be willing to seed or distribute the disk, so that I know who NOT to accidentally send the disk to.  Thank you for your understanding.

Hey, Puggo, how's this coming along?  Given the anticipation surrounding a recent release this thread hasn't gotten a lot of attention lately, but don't you think for even a moment that we aren't all keeping our fingers crossed a for a successful release soon!

Thanks :)

The reviewers recommended 5 changes, one of which was a fix.  I did 4 of them (the 5th one I'm not going to do), and it's re-encoding now.  I will be out of town the entire labor day weekend, but anticipate having the whole thing done in the middle of the week following Labor day.

Quick technical question...

When the user presses the "audio" button on his DVD remote, it cycles through the various audio tracks.  When it does that, the "name" of each audio track generally appears briefly on the screen.

Does anyone know how to set these names in DVD-Lab Pro?  Right now, they all say the same thing (Dolby stereo).  It would be nice if I could get the names to match what they are in PSB (one is mono, one is stereo).  Or is it even possible?  I've been digging through the DVD-Lab help without success.

BTW, I have DVD-Lab Pro 2.

thanks!

Open the movie window, and click on the button "Audio X" (Audio 1/Audio 2...).

A new window appears where you can set the audio, but that's pretty much it.

If you want to label the track, that's probably not possible in DVD-Lab Pro and probably not even in the DVD specification :-) You can just set some attributes like "director's commentary", "alt. director's commentary", "for visually impaired" and "normal" but that's it

Yeah, I am suspecting it isn't possible.  DVD-Lab seems to let you specify what each language is, but apparently not what each "mix" is.

And, the reason that my DVD player is saying that both are stereo, is presumably because I encoded the mono mix as a stereo track with two identical channels.  The reason I've been doing it that way, is because apparently some 5.1 systems play back mono in the center speaker only.  Since many 5.1 systems have a center speaker that is inferior to the stereo speakers, I encoded it as stereo so that both mixes will come out of the main L/R speakers.

So now here is my next question... supposing that what I have said above is true, and the DVD player is capable of detecting the nature of the audio source and display that (when selecting audio on the remote), should I re-encode the mono mix as mono AC3 instead of stereo AC3?  It seems to me that on the "plus" side, the type of audio would be properly displayed.  On the "minus" side, some systems would play the mono mix through the center channel only, making it sound (on some systems) more anemic than it really is.  As of now, I'm leaning towards leaving the mono track as stereo/fake mono.

Thoughts?  PSB is done, I just have this one last decision to make.

I'd leave it as is ("dual mono") as well.

As an additional bonus, the same track played through 2 speakers will be perceptually "louder" than just coming through one.

On the other hand, if you encode it as mono, the end user can choose to do something other than listen to just the center channel but also has the option of using just the center channel if they want.

Not helping,

There are ways to utilize either a mono or dual mono track in multiple ways.

Most home theater systems have either a "dual mono" setting and/or a"mono film" setting that can be used to spread the mono audio track between 2, 5.1, or even 7.1 speakers, instead of just the center channel.

If you use a dual mono track and play it with dolby pro-logic enabled it should send all the audio to the center channel.  This gets you back to the mono only setting, if desired.

You leave it as Dolby 2.0 and either in information or metadata can detail as 2.0 mono. This is how it is done on commercial DVDs that I've seen, the box and menus will list mono but the technical specs are just Dolby 2.0 ac3.

I vote for the dual mono. Those track labels are rarely useful anyway.

Is there a place in the DVD menu to select the tracks, or is it only done through the remote?

Do you know if the DVD standard allows for metadata in which one can specify 2.0 mono, so that a player could opt to display that information when that audio track is selected?  That's what I'm looking for in DVD-Lab Pro2... I just don't even know if it's worth searching for (if it's not part of the standard, there's no point in my continuing to search in DVD-Lab for it).

Regardless, it looks like I'm going to stick with the 2.0 mono I've been using. Thanks for all the great feedback everyone.
