all of that work was chronicled 

from about aug 2011 to feb 2012

at a private blog.

it has been archived. and will be

released in the future when the

restoration is done. i might post

some previews when we're done

with star wars.

we are currently reworking some

of the parts with damage, and expect

it to be complete in the next year or

so. it's about 70-80% watchable

right now, but the last parts are

going to take awhile to get done right.

Can you call this a preservation?  I think this is great but a real preservation needs to be made.  I guess we will not see that until Mr. Lucas passes away though.

Taking a photo right off the film with the lcd light sounds smart.  It would probably avoid losing quality over projecting the film onto ground glass like a real optical printer would.  This should produce some interesting results but nothing like a real preservation.  Especially since the source materials have to be a mess.  This is a slight step above the 16mm work being done. 

Same here. Can't wait to see it. 

Far more interested in projects going on here than any official Lucasfilm releases. That's a pretty sorry state of affairs.

thanks for the comments everyone.

star wars is coming to the end for the first

pass, and the color correction stuff should

be done pretty quickly. the adjustments

and stability stuff along with the dirt

and cleanup is still going to take awhile.

along with the sound and final renders.

we still don't have a date, but as it gets

closer, we'll keep posting updates.

although we've done a lot of work on empire, it's going

to have wait quite awhile until we polish off star wars

first, and then we'll get back to it. some people would

be ok with it in the condition its in now. but only if you

could take the 15-20 minutes that still need a lot of

clean up and digital fixes to stability and dewarping.

I'm asking because I would try to recreate the Movietrailer for Star Wars in 1080p, but the Trailer was in 1.78:1, which means I would have to upscale the movie first...

it's a lot harder to work in 4K..

the raw files alone would take up to 15-20 Terabytes

to hold the scan... i can't imagine how much bigger

the video would be.. instead of a 25 Gig disc, you

would have to use 50 Gig blurays, etc.. and unless

you had a really fast computer, you woudn't be able

to watch video at that resolution (i can't).

Do you (can you?!) plan to release a non-cleaned-up scaled-down version? It'd be very useful for those of us who'd like to play with the raw scans, but can't afford to send you 15-20TB worth of hard-drives.

What resizing algorithm do you plan to use to scale-down the images?

there are plans for the raw image data

to be released. but we haven't finalized

it yet, because we are adding more capture

data, and the size of it is around 6-8 T. It's

going to be hard to figure out how to do shipping

and things for. i don't have highspeed connections,

so putting it up on usenet is out of the questions,

and it's way to much data to put on disks. so

unless someone can come up with a good plan,

it's going to be very tricky. we never had to deal

with this amount of data before.
