The N64 was probably my favorite system, but I emulate with so many systems.  I have a strong affinity for the original NES, as that was still the coolest thing when I was 6.  My best friends all had Nintendos and I did not.  I'd go over to their houses and play advanced games like Super Mario Bros. 2 and The Adventures of Link.  Man, thems was good times.

Now I emulate to relive my experiences from time to time.  Anyone ever check out the real Super Mario Bros. 2?  That is a flippin' hard game.

Yeah, it was a big deal when I got past the third level on that. Your timing has to be so precise to make all the jumps and kills. Definitely of the old school arcade level of patience.

Third level, or third world? Man. Ya gotta be more specific with Mario.

I wouldn't be surprised if he merely meant the third level.  It's a very hard game.  Instead of the very different American release of Super Mario Bros. 2 where you can choose between 4 characters with various powers in a somewhat Arabesque world, picking up and throwing veggies and all that, it's much more similar to the first game.  You bust bricks and jump on goombas.  You can choose between Mario and Luigi, who are actually slightly different in that Luigi can jump higher and farther than Mario, but has significantly reduced traction, often sliding off the narrow platforms.  Super Mario Bros. is a challenging game IMO.  The Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2 is simply nigh impossible...now that I wrote all that, I think it was released in Super Mario All Stars for SNES as The Lost Levels, but with cosmetic and other minor differences.  Still, if you're up for a challenge, you should give it a try.

Sega Genesis FTW. If you loved sports games like I did, Genesis and EA Sports were heaven.

I enjoy retro games as well. My  XBOX(original) is softmodded and has tons of NES, SNES, and arcade games including all the Metal Slug arcades.

I never had an XBox and have never really been too enthusiastic about the XBox line of system, but I'm seriously considering picking one up for this reason. They are dirt cheap and you can pretty much put every emulator ever made on the biggest HDD models. I have a lot of the consoles themselves but it would be nice to have them all in one compact package. I often play Genesis emulators on my dreamcast since that's the one system that is permanently hooked up, but it's disc based so it would be nice to just have them all on a hard-drive. Not sure what I would do about the controller though since I'm not the biggest fan of the X-Box controller.

There are so many NES games that I had never played (or even heard about) that I would have never played before. There are also so many old games that I could never beat (Maximum Carnage for SNES FTW) that I could finally play through using cheats.

Oh on the Japanese Mario 2, the third level is a bit of a challenge. I don't even know what the third world looks like!

My childhood gaming was spent losing to all my Genesis games and readily developing my crazy run n' gun gaming strategies. I still pull out my MK 1 Genesis for some more pain.

I'm also a huge arcade freak though always limited in what I can find nowadays.Still freeze anytime I hear Galaga, OutRun, Robotron 2084, attraction cues- or Star Wars Trilogy Arcade, my favorite game of all time.

I love pinball machines, but the first to admit I'm middling at best. No supple wrist. ;)

Still play my old Genesis, PSX, N64, and Gamecube. I always buy the console after they've been dead a few years. I started doing this because I noticed how cheap they were as a kid once discarded and that they were just as fun.

And my Game Gear's screen finally died recently. Noooooooo!

BTW worst SW game ever: Yoda Stories, Game Boy Color. The horror.

Yoda Stories, PC. It cost more money and took up more computer space!

Fun fact. A numbered limited edition run of DL Laserdiscs was the last title ever pressed in the U.S before they shut down the pressing plant forever.

Where were you in '77?

Man, pinball. I have a full-size machine from the '80s in the garage. It's always saddening when I visit old childhood haunts and there's none left (and this is coming from a 19-year-old).

Also, I"ve made it to World 4 on Mario 2 JP but to be fair I played on the virtual console, so I never have to start over since the game doesn't really shut off.

Retro gaming is among my greatest passions. I also collect retro consoles (though I often prefer Dos, Mac, and Amiga games), and arcade machines. (No Pinball tables yet, though...) Here's what I recall from the top of my head:

Atari 2600

NES

SNES (With some rare peripherals, such as the Super 8, Game Doctor SF3, and Nakitech Game Saver)

N64

PSX and PS1 (With the attached LCD Screen)

Amiga 500

A sort of MS-Dos computer, runs like a Pentium 1

iMac G3

Macintosh SE

2 Dreamcasts (1 without the boot protection)

Sega Genesis Model 1 with Sega CD Model 2

Sega Nomad

Neo-Geo MVS Arcade Machine (It's a conversion in a 19" Dynamo cabinet, but nice. Even though it's a 4-slot model, I'm just using slot 1 with the 111-in-1 Cartridge.)

Mortal Kombat 2 Arcade Machine (Dedicated, and in fantastic condition. It was once converted to an Area 51, but has luckily has been converted back. I plan to use a switcher to include MK1-MK4.)

Converting a fighting game cabinet into a light gun cabinet and then back again is quite a bit of work. Was it an original MKII artwork cab?

Yes, it's an original cabinet. I don't have many pics of it, but here's one that I took with my phone right after I'd gotten it:

Since then, I've removed the leftover Area 51 artwork from the sides, and the gun holsters. It didn't come with Mortal Kombat 2 in it, though, so I put in a Mortal Kombat 1 motherboard and installed some buttons for testing. It works very well, and the monitor (K7000) is quite pristine. It's one of the items I'm the most proud of! :)

I don't have any retro systems, unless you consider a Gamecube "retro", but I love old games. I'm currently playing NES Castlevania on my DS Lite. They just don't make games like this anymore. I'm sorry, but Call of Duty is a cakewalk compared to something like Castlevania.

Awesome graphic, georgec. This is why the last FPS I played was Doom. I'm pretty sure that's a level in Doom on the left, btw!

The Legend of Zelda is probably my favorite game series, and although I love almost every game in the franchise, including Wind Waker, my favorite will always be A Link To The Past. That is classic 2D gaming perfection. Same with the Metroid series, the 2D games blow the 3D ones out of the water in terms of difficulty and design.

It's E1M6. I have great memories of that map!

Doom 2 on xbla comes with a new side episode called No rest for the living. IMO the levels are a lot better than some of the stuff in Doom 2 actual. I wish they'd release more episodes as DLC. Doom and Doom 2 are games that I often go back to.

Return to Castle Wolfenstein had a pretty old-school design, which is why this is one of the few FPS games I've beaten in the last five years. Lots of dead-ends, locked doors and back-tracking. Some levels you really don't know exactly where you are supposed to go. It was fun, if somewhat unremarkable.

For the same reason I loved Star Wars: Dark Forces. Complex levels where you can actually get lost, despite the map! Who makes games like this today?

I saw the original theatrical release of the Old Trilogy on the big screen and I'm proud of it...
How did I accomplish that (considering my age) is my secret...

RRS-1980: Ah, yes. Dark Forces was great, and is among the most under-appreciated games I've known. The engine didn't have the main features of the Build Engine (Duke Nukem 3d, Blood, Shadow Warrior, etc.), but it was certainly more advanced than Doom-clones of that time. Also, of course, they had actual cutscenes between the missions, which wasn't so common back then. I wish that it had multiplayer, though. :( I loved how the fact that it took place in the Star Wars universe didn't interfere, or become a redundant selling point like the modern Star Wars games! (Including Star Wars characters in Soul Calibur 4 was ridiculous.)

georgec: That makes a very good point. Newer things aren't inherently better! I believe that mastery of game making, or any art form, can be shown with brilliance in things that are complex or simple. Heh, it's funny how the pictures spoof too much sharing on facebook, and yet the site hosting them is covered in 'like' and 'share' buttons... xD
