How long have you been working on this project -1? Will you post schematics of your scanning machine so that others may attempt to do what you are doing? It would be very helpful for even non Star Wars related material.

^ here's possibly a first post: [June 28, 2008] http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Making-our-own-35mm-preservation-my-crazy-proposal/post/322215/#TopicPost322215
and he's given the statistics on the still camera and programing hack to control it's automated usage, along with the system controlling the film. It's all in the thread.

this is where most of that information is
concerning the equipment:

I know about what was previously said but I was hoping to get more specifics on what model numbers on the equipment being used. I understand the basics. What is the film being projected on? Ground glass? I would like to construct something similar maybe with a Nikon D300 shooting RAW files. Thor's footage with the scanner was stupendous. The stills look good but moving video might be something completely different. I doubt a consumer camera has the dynamic range needed to capture all the information from film.

gotcha,
i'll find out what i can. although some of the equipment
is no longer made, or made from improvised parts.
it's basically a modified film strip projector.
the pulley system is based off a vhs motor, and connected
so that it moves at the rate of about 2 frames per second.
we used a manual system before which was much more
tedious. there's a lens between the camera and the
projector. i'll try to find out the light source type also.

here's some more samples of frames
from the last clip.
again, these are just to show some tests,
if you notice, you will see more image
than any GOUT version since we haven't
cropped anything it yet, which is from 3-5%
of the image

What photoshop/other program options do you typically use to correct the red colour? In gimp the "curves" option (under colors etc) seems to work, but I can't get all the red out sometimes.

edit: using tint and saturation seems to work a little but it might've taken out a bit too much color.

here are 2 examples of the early attempts to
correct the red tint:

It’s really sad when the “creative minds” behind something we hold dear are also guilty of its destruction.
What are you projecting the image onto? The only other way to do it would be to take a picture right off of the film?

If I understand correctly, that's exactly what he's doing.

lucasdroid wrote: The only other way to do it would be to take a picture right off of the film?
Gotta agree, if you want an 80s appropriate film preservation methodology using the silly putty trick is a novel and inspiring choice.
I Thought he was basicly taking a picture of the projection directly. (so not bounced off a screen)

-1, are you making use of any of the red version for your final version, or only for reference and color tinkering? curious.

not from the test reel. that's just for playing around with.
the other 5 reels we have, might have some frames that have
less grain than the LPP, so we might use some of that.

yes, the video and pictures of the setup show that we have the camera
directly mounted to take pictures directly through the lens off the lcd
illuminated film.

I don't follow this thread often, but I do have a question. Are you snapping each picture by hand or is it automated somehow?
A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.
I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!
