If you never saw the original trilogy you could never guess that he could grow up to be so evil. No doubt the prequal trilogy removes some of the original trilogys surprises when watched all at once. Still it gives the saga a complete storyline. Just as watching the originals first removes most of the prequals surprises. If you watch all six movies in a row it will have its surprises.
Sometimes I believe it's not really George Lucas making all these odd decisions but special effect junkies at ILM that are drunk from all the technological toys available to them, that kinda make the whole thing 'SFX biased' by indirectly influencing him with tons of 'suggestions'.
As a result, the two trilogies are like a jigsaw puzzle with overlapping peaces, imho.
