I found him a bit too goofy for my liking in the '89 film, but I thought he was fine in Returns. In any case, he's still better than Bale's "dumbass playboy" IMO.

^Speaking the truth.

Downfall (2004) 9/10 - Intensely interesting film.

The 39 Steps (1935) 9/10 - I've been meaning to watch this one for a very long time. I actually thought it would be more a Hitchcock mystery, but a Hitchcock adventure is fine with me. Great film. (In related news, Vertigo was named number 1 in the most recent Sight & Sound poll. Not a bad choice.)

The Fountain (2006) 9/10 - When I watch a film, I prefer to know nothing about it, except that it's great. Usually I know this by seeing it on a list of some sort, but in many cases I just go by director. Recently, I've been trying to watch all of Darren Aronofsky's movies, so I saw this one. Going in, I only knew he directed it, and that it was weird. I'm so glad for this. When it was over, I thought about what it all meant during the credits. And I figured it out. I checked online, and Aronofsky's own words backed my interpretation. Overall, to sum up this little rant, I was pleased with the experience. A beautiful film with a beautiful meaning. It's too bad, from what I've read, many critics and audiences didn't give this film a chance. But I think it deserves a chance, and some thoughtful patience. Recommended.

Romancing the Stone.

I only own a few blu-rays, and this is one of them. Such a fantastic, fun movie. Endlessly rewatchable. I first saw this on TV when I was about ten and was instantly hooked.

The Corridor 2010

This movie had potential at times, but in the end it fell flat. There was points in the film that could have developed into a great story, but nothing went anywhere.

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels - 7.5/10

A lot of fun, but I saw the twist coming a mile away. Didn't ruin the movie for me, though, because of the great performances and plenty of laughs.

The Hunger Games

I haven't read the books but understand they have a huge following. I only watched Battle Royale a couple of weeks ago but have known about the film and novel for some time. Whenever someone mentioned The Hunger Games it sounded like an Americanized, dumbed down version of BR. My intuition was correct. While the film wasn't awful, it just wasn't very good. No real sense of dread or danger. Thin, uninteresting characters. Weak script. I'm surprised it received so many positive critical reviews. The direction was uninspired. The few action scenes were poorly done, probably with some intention to obscure violence to cater to the PG-13 crowd. But still, this entire movie lacked style and originality, especially considering the type of world and story they were trying to tell. Just another half-hearted Hollywood adaptation to cash in on the popularity of the books.

John Carter, 2 stars in my opinion not a turkey but not worth the 250 million it cost to make or the 200 million dollar write down it cost Disney.

Yeah the films the Burroughs books inspired are far better films though, especially that 4 star masterpiece from 1977 known as star wars that cost a paltry 10 million to make and no cartoon cgi or shooting on video was needed.

 

They took all the badass superhuman coolness of John Carter and tried to make him a reluctant hero who refuses to fight.

John Carter the greatest swordsman of 3 worlds refuses to fight,lol.

Far worse than the butcher job they did with Tolkien's writing in peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings, which still was closer in spirit to those books than John Carter was to A Princess Of Mars.

Because of Disney's hatchet job the Venus Series will now never be made into films, the rest of the martian series won't either, and a faithful tarzan as far as possible minus the racism of the time is now out of the question.

The Right Stuff

Never saw it before. Didn't realize it was over three hours long. I found the whole film on Youtube and thought, "I always wanted to see this, I'll watch the first ten minutes just to see what it's like." That was all she wrote. A great character ensemble and very inspiring story. I thought the "rough around the edges" style to the special effects gave them an incredibly realistic feel, almost like they sent documentary crews into the stratosphere to get this footage. The only downside is that I couldn't stop thinking about all the Simpsons references to famous scenes from the Homer-in-space episode.

V/H/S

One of the best horror movies I've seen in awhile. I've enjoyed Rec 1/2, Cloverfield, Paranormal Activity (sequels are okay but don't do anything fresh), and non-horror found footage films like Chronicle and Troll Hunter. Found footage films have their fair share of detractors but this one does it quite well, even incorporating more technology into some of the stories. Genuinely creepy, shocking, and varied in each of the 6 tales it tells (each done by a different director). They range from slow burns to intense thrillers. Wouldn't want to say much more for spoilers, but there were some really clever scares in this film. A fantastic horror anthology.

A good story, not a great film, the girlfriend says the book is a lot better. I felt like it suffered from some boring performances.

Requiem for a Dream (2000) 9.5/10 - Quite powerful.

Pi (1998) 8.5/10 - Quite weird/interesting/crazy (in a very good way). Side note: I've finally seen all of Darren Arornofsky's films!

Melancholia.

No balls.

I really wanted to like this film but in the end it just feels like wasted potential. The ending is shown in the opening moments off the film so for a lot of it you are just watching characters either doing absolutely nothing or just being dicks to each other.

The movie does have great visuals but that is all it really has going for it and there's a great cast but they just have nothing to do.

Three Stooges (2012)

Awesome. I'm a huge Stooges fan, and this is less a remake/update/whatever than a tribute. They made it like a 1930s Stooges short. They use dummies when people get blown up, when they run away the footage is sped up, and they have episode titles/intros every 30 minutes for each act of the film. It's more like watching Elvis impersonators or those Beatlemania performances,  except it's the three stooges. If you like the original Stooges shorts, this is a wonderful gift to fans. If you think the Three Stooges are stupid, this will just confirm that opinion. I come from a family who went to Three Stooges conventions in the 1970s when it was literally a guy screening 16mm copies in a barn (no home video or TV marathons that decade). I'm going to be watching it again. :p
