Well i was going to comment on the Olympics but, after seeing the new title change, i guess i out of luck.

Looks like i can't comment on older version of the Olympics and have to love the latest version; Can't comment on how they have now just become a money making machine...... hang on....doesn't all this sound familiar??? ;)

Does that mean that Warblers true identity is George Lucas????

whatever,  my nation is the US of A and that is who I cheer for.

Would it be a bit unpatriotic of me to cheer for the Chinese?

yes.

Then I think Zombie's comments on nationalism stand pretty damn firm.

Primary thing I care about during the olympics is the archery.... Sadly I've seen only pics of the archery since NBC and IOC are being copyright asshatery assholes and taking down any vids that pop up on the net and their broadcasts focus on bike peddling.... What the fuck!!!?!?!??!?!?!?!?

Fortune cookies are part of the Queen's plan to retake the British rule over everyone. Tiny cameras and mics are in those things. Once they know everyone's everything they'll rule the planet!!!!!! Mwhaha!!!!

Pretty sure you can watch archery online too...

On the NBC official stream you gotta give some code I don't know to watch their stuff. You're supposed to get it from your cable provider. Too much bullshit to go through quite frankly. Also the BBC official stream requires you to be a resident of the UK or, go through the trouble of faking residency via proxy server stuff. All this bullshit....

I don't see how protecting their content is bullshit, but whatever.

Not to mention that you can't watch archery on your TV because it doesn't generate ratings and ad revenue, not because they are assholes.

Watching the US vs. Montenegro in water polo right now. Man alive, I can't even imagine being in good enough shape to play this sport.

Can I have the short and sweet synopsis on how a thread about the Olympics disintegrated?

Athens was pretty special last time, I wouldn't mind seeing them get every third one or something.

I didn't comment on Warbler vs Zombie, but I thought zombie84 was dead on.

What I do want to comment on is the idea that cheering for other countries is unpatriotic. Olympic coverage is notorious for telling the life stories of specific contestants. I'm sure it's okay with warbler if I decide to cheer for one individual contestant over another regardless of the country they are playing for, right?

Also, warbler, you disagreed that the Olympics were political and said it was entertainment. If it's entertainment and not nationalistic competition then why can't I cheer for China in all events?

She didn't used to 'own' any of those countries. Her Dad did, but she didn't.

Get it right, internet.

I hate the Olympics, always have, always will, for just about every reason zombie84 so astutely pointed out and more. Anyone who thinks sports and the Olympics is just about fun is seriously ignorant. Sports, aside from making a game out of physical activities early humans used to survive (swimming, fishing, throwing, running, climbing, etc.), are also highly symbolic war game.s If you think that's lost on world leaders, you're crazy. So, right off the bat, it's presumptuous to assume that the Olympics are about fostering peace. Maybe on the surface, but politics is about claiming to foster peace while you prepare for war. Peacekeeper missile, anyone?

You don't foster peace between nations by beating them in a physical competition. My strongest memory about the Olympics, growing up in the 80s, is people cheering for the US to beat those commie bastards in the USSR.

I have no problem with being proud of your nation if your nation has earned it, but let's be honest. The Olympics are not just about taking pride in your nation. Most people I know watch the Olympics to see their country win, not just to "pick a side because it's fun" but because it's fun to believe that my country is better than yours. This is just basic human nature.

Anyway, that's enough out of me here. Dissenting opinions are not wanted. Maybe I should start a thread about hating the Olympics where no one is allowed to talk about liking them.

You can have this discussion without me.

Not really. You're the only one here that feels it makes makes me unpatriotic when I cheer on a British guy (or Chinese chick, etc.) over an American (I was actually pretty surprised to hear that, I more than half expected you to say "no, of course not"), but at the same time claim it isn't about nationalism. There really is no discussion here without you.

Not saying that to try to encourage you to continue the conversation. It'd be an interesting discussion, because I'd really like to see where that viewpoint comes from and the logic behind it (so far all we've got is, "whatever" and "*sigh*"), but I don't think it would be any fun and would just get certain blood pressures rising. Not worth it.
