Cliches that need to stop — Page 5

Lando was played down in the series as far as I'm concerned. When I was little, I didn't understand hwo he was at all. I hadn't a clue why he tricked Han or anything.

Here's another cliche:

a person contemplating suicide has a life changing experience...LAME
I just hate stupid people.

GO JETS!!!!

Howabout...

"May the Force Be With You."

Or...

"Tolkien is the best writer ever!"

Then again...

"50 Cent fucking rocks dude!!!"

Or the classic...

"Billions and billions of years ago..."

Oh, this thread is about PLOT cliches? Ah...

"Boy saves girl/Boy is evil/Girl dies/GL makes crapload of money"
Which is the more foolish, the fool (the OT) or the fool who follows (the PT)?

"Stay back, or Mr...Fett gets it!"

I'm writing a movie and i want to stay as far away from cliche's as I can. But this other guy that I've let in on my idea has basically tried to tell me every cliche in the book. Like man jumps infront of person to save them from bullet/man dies boring and too predictable.
"Who's scruffy-lookin'?" - Han Solo
"I wish my lawn was emo so it would cut itself." -sybeman
"You know, putting animals in the microwave is not a good idea. I had to learn that one the hard way." -seanwookie

A nice way around the "Man Takes Bullet for Friend" would be for the guy to have the dumb luck to wander in front of it...or basically for him to unintentionally to take it.

Heh, or the guy being shot pushes him into the way...

The best way to get rid of cliches is either to acknowledge them with a wink, or to twist them. It seems to be the only way that Hollywood and the viewing audience gets the hint.

Princess Leia: I happen to like nice men.
Han Solo: I'm a nice man.

The Millenium Falcon is important in the EU books. It wouldn't be the same with out her.

Have we exhausted all possible cliches yet?
"You fell victim to one of the classic blunders, the most famous of which is 'Never get involved in a land war in Asia'."

You can never go through all of them.

How about when someone has to go downtown in a big city and they manage to find a parking space right in front of the building with no problem?

The hero is in a dark place and they wake up whatever nasty thing lives there, usually by turning on a flashlight/lighting a match. And the thing is right behind them.

Don't you love it when the escaping bad guy stops for a few seconds to shake his fist and say something like "You may have won this round, but I'll be back!"?

to be the joker here: when you think about it, pretty much everything is a cliché.

If you film it... it becomes a cliche.
“Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.” — Nazi Reich Marshal Hermann Goering

Reading this thread, I couldn't help but think of Family Guy (new episodes coming in 2005!). This show has such clever and witty humor; it's awesome. Cliches are parodied all the time, the first one that comes to mind:

(Peter and his friends are walking back from fishing)
Cleveland: So what did you catch Peter?
Peter: Oh, nothing much, just a tire, a boot, a rusty can, and this book of cliches.
