Those are exactly the reasons why I keep BOTH versions of TOS :-)

Part 3 of the Oduka's interview is up on TrekCore. They mention in "The Naked Now" that they discuss the TOS Enterprise in the episode but show a diagram of the refit. They've made a diagram of the TOS Enterprise to use in that shot.
I asked Oduka about it on Twitter:

Are you planning on fixing many mistakes like that? You've got to be torn between recreating the original FX & making them better

In vast majority of cases, we try to re-create original FX, including artistic decisions with which we disagree.

I thought TOSR crossed the line when they erased a statue that was part of the live action city set in the episode "Wink of an eye".
Where were you in '77?
Missed that. Mine was the new expansive shots of Vulcan for Amok Time that replaced live action shots completely.

Exactly the reason I'm glad the Blu-ray keeps both for me. But do we do the same with all 7 seasons of TNG?
I'm depending on you people to preserve the originals, I don't care for TNG enough to buy both! ;-)

There are new pics again : http://tng.trekcore.com/bluray/#comiccon
I absolutely love it :-)
That shot of the torpedo spread is awesome.

The interesting thing is that all the remastered special effect shots are widescreen
I believe that ILM shot the effects for the pilot on widescreen film, as evidenced by the recreated credits seen on an early trailer:pittrek said:

You'll notice that the two "new" close ups are actually reuses from the shots from the credits, and the long shot is mostly CGI so they rendered it in 16:9 to match the others. The other preview shots (using effects NOT from the opening credits) have been cropped, as the Blu-ray is.
What still bugs me is that they rendered ALL the new TOSR shots in 16:9 for some reason.
I remember seeing the TOS footage widescreen but only in some promo pictures. Was the widescreen render actually used ?
I believe the Japanese got cropped 16:9 live action and full 16:9 new effects shots. Some of the episodes available on Xbox Live had 4:3 live action and 16:9 effects.pittrek said:

The interview on TrekMovie says that they're using a CG Enterprise for shots they don't find, and they're using Tobias Richter's model, better known as The Light Works. I've always been impressed with his models for years, he now does the effects for New Voyages/Phase II. I love when they don't start from scratch when there are perfectly good fan works out there. Interesting that they didn't use the model created by John Knoll for Generations (and used in DS9 as various Galaxy-class ships) OR the one Gabriel Köerner (another ascended fan) made for the last episode of Enterprise.

A comparison of the original saucer separation effect from "Encounter at Farpoint", the HD reuse in "Star Trek: Generations", and the CGI replacement used in TNGR.
I wonder if ILM lost the separation footage when they reused it for "Generations", so that's why they had to use Richter's model?

Since they give you a choice of the original episodes, I guess my only beef was the new stuff looks sort of screensavery. If they had somehow gotten the tv-era ship up to the level of the Trumbull '79 that would have been cool. TNG should be very interesting, I'd like to netflix those blu-rays first, though I doubt they'll have it. Also, I still have a thing for Tasha Yar with that new wave/ Gozer hair in that one episode.
I totally forgot about the reused stuff in Generations, it makes sense that's when that footage went missing. One more reason to hate that movie.
I should have said I thought they crossed the line when I saw it broadcast.
The Blu Rays were not out yet at the time, and the season one HD-DVD set did not include the originals.
Where were you in '77?
Season 1 is not out yet and they have already released a trailer for Season 2... http://tng.trekcore.com/bluray/#s2trail
It looks amazing, this is the first time ever I am REALLY looking forward to a BD set
Big ol' article and interview about Season 1 full of photos and video.
Weird to see some of those makeup/costume tests looking so clean. They were part of the blooper reel that circulated among fans as washed out bootlegs for years. Wonder if that's in the extras?
And that Romulan warbird looks stunning in the remaster.
Where were you in '77?
Looks like they're seriously considering giving DS9 the same treatment if the fans push for it.

I think once they see the sales numbers for TNG, it'll be a no-brainer for them. I guess Trek will continue to bleed my wallet dry for many years to come...not that I mind.

I got my ticket a month ago, excited.
Edit: Just got back. Very disappointed in the presentation. The blacks were washed out and the picture detail was very poor. I'd say it was on par with the original broadcasts. I'm sure the actual blu-rays will look far superior. Just another strike against AMC in my book.
I can't wait till my Blus arrive :-)

I read at AVS that the digital projectors used for these events aren't the digital cinema projectors used for feature presentations, but the junky low-resolution ones used for the marketing garbage shown before the previews.
I'm just about to open my box set and watch Encounter at Farpoint. I'll post my impressions.
