Macrovision essentially used trickery to make older recorders THINK there was a problem with the signal, thus you would just get a bunch of tearing and chroma goofyness.  Any modern recording method (like the ones I mentioned above) pretty much just ignore the trickery from Macrovision.

 I am trying to get an idea of what I first saw Star Wars on.
I am almost shore it was a copy of a rental. At the time the
only way I would have gotten it was to have a tape without Macrovision.
