Puggo GRANDE - 16mm restoration (Released) — Page 29

It's a bootleg brought to our attention a couple years ago by an OT member with the handle "catnap". It was a telecine of a 16mm print incredibly similar to yours (except it was done back in the 80s, so the color is intact).

I'll do some screenshot comparisons of this vs. Puggo Grande later.

Cue dot is SMPTE-55 non-compliant. Should appear one frame sooner.
Both Catnap & GRANDE have the same error (while S.Krig is compliant.)

However This cue dot error from Catnap is not present on GRANDE.

However, in practice you must take into account the “fuckwit factor”. Just talk to Darth Mallwalker…

3po sez: 3,270 to 1.  Definitely a possibility but i'd say rather remote.  Would make some sense that these prints do remain in the hands of like minded Star Wars fans but this would be so bizarre.  Hopefully more 16mm's will be digitized and this can be looked at with a good data set.  and the catnap color strafes throughout, which needs to be considered when looking at a specific scene.

Isn't that pic from moth3r?  Here's the Catnap: (just peaking out the bottom, if that's not an artifact or other type of capture error)

General question on SMPTE-55 and cue dots.  What are their proper names (besides motor and change over) or a common usage name and as there are only 4 per group, do they have a more specific name.  I should have capped all of them... instead of just one per group.  Reminds me to add the -1 ESB to: http://fd.noneinc.com/Reel_Changes/Reel_Changes.html

You're right. Pay no attention to that man behind the curtains with a crackpipe.

Here's Catnap:

So Catnap, Moth3r, & GRANDE are non-compliant. S.Krig complies.

...paying no attention to the curtains behind a manpipe with that crack...

How'd you figure out the compliance/non-compliance?  Have you been counting frames between cues?!!!  Or did you come to this conclusion as in moth3r's there is a double cue:

moth3r's got other double cue'd frames:

Rookie cue maker.

That's one of the weird things about the print used in Moth3r; there's also the "Red Leader, we're right above you" shot that inexplicably is tinted orange. (GRANDE, Catnap and Starkiller/MeBeJedi instead have an orange splice flash at the top of the first frame.)

Yes!???
In the first example [...taken your first step into a larger world.]
there's 169 frames between 'motor run' and 'reel changeover'. Should have been 168.
And there's only 23 after 'reel change' instead of 24.
That's what I meant non-compliant (probably shouldn't be hyphenated but I have a bad habit that way.)

In the second example of Han/Chewie, Moth3r's preservation show two sets of 'motor run' dots.
There is my 'simulated filmstrip' view of it.
The second set of dots is compliant (200 frames from reel end.) First set just wrong.
GRANDE doesn't have those. Catnap might as your screenshot showed--maybe it's too cropped to tell.

anyone have a working link they can send me please?

Cheers!

It's still up on MySpleen, if torrents is an option for you. Let me know if you need an invite.

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

That print has been listed and re-listed for a couple months, and nobody has bought it, probably because of the price tag. But if anybody here wants to fork over a cool two grand for this print...

I'd rather see money spent on a telecine that can handle those larger reels.

That's the only thing holding up those Derann prints at this point.

Where were you in '77?

Agreed, we already have Puggo's transfers of ESB and ROTJ in the pipeline. Transfers of those LPP 8mm prints of the original are a higher priority than an 8mm of ESB.

I've had similar issues attempting to get a hold of this through a couple of torrents; no one is seeding it. I'm particularly familiar with torrents... any other options I don't know of?

I would have a look on the alt.binaries.starwars newsgroup.....

It may still be there.

I gave you an invite to MySpleen where it's still seeded.

So awesome. Thanks again.

I'm a little late to the party, but THANK YOU to Puggo for making this and to msycamore for the invitation.

Puggo Grande is just wonderful.  The original wipes, the mono mix, the scratches, all of it makes for an viewing experience in which the focus is the content, not the quality of presentation. I enjoyed watching Star Wars more than I have in years watching this version.

Awesome!

And I know I'm not alone in anxiously awaiting Puggo Strikes Back.

Thanks!  I've been working 24/7 running a 6-week summer program, after which I finally get a real bona-fide 6 week break.  Thus a reasonable time frame for finishing PSB is the end of August (and I'm actually quite confident about that).

Unfortunately, it appears that my thumb drive with ROTP got lost in the mail to England (on its way to Adywan for color correction). Meaning that I'll have to buy another one and start that process again.  Minor annoyance.

Puggo, I can see that I couldn't be any later to this party, but you'll have to excuse me for having given up on seeing an unmolested version of Star Wars ever again. The screencaps alone are thrilling to me, and it looks like the rest of the trilogy are in the works as well? Amazing! This doesn't look like digital paintings over a scaffolding of Star Wars -- it looks like STAR WARS!

I'm not a regular torrenter, but in this case I'd feel zero guilt in downloading such a thing for pure nostalgic enjoyment -- the mountain of cash Mr. Lucas sleds down on his way to breakfast every morning was partially padded with contributions by my parents and grandparents in the form of toys, games, Halloween costumes, etc.

On that note, is anyone able to spare a Myspleen invite, please? As far as I can make out, that seems to be the only place where the Grande might still be seeded.

This is a wonderful piece of preservation -- thanks Puggo, and to all who've contributed. (And thanks to circa '77 George Lucas for making what is still my all-time favorite movie).

I am attempting to sync the Scofield audio to Puggo Grande and I must say my respect for all of you who have done this kind of work has gone up tremendously
