Wow, MUCH more detail in the bottom shots. If there was ever any fraction of a doubt that Harmy was our guy, it should now be dispelled...

Though, like he said, there are some aspects of the top version that I kinda like.

I'm with Harmy on this also, but it is the best the scene can probably look.  That is more than enough for me lol.

redownloaded the WP and wow!  Phenomenal work, Harmy.  Just watched the most recent work on the compactor scene and it looks fantastic.  I gotta stop watching these, it makes waiting for the full version 2.0 that much more difficult.

Oh yeah, that just was a remark, not a complaint.

Same here, very excited to watch this on the big screen.

These HD projects are a real revelation to me.  There's so much detail in the sets that I never noticed before (including watching it in theaters as a kid, I think we forget how crappy most theaters were in the olden days, at least in the small towns and army bases I lived on in the late 70's early 80's).

I can't wait for this one!  :)

Great job Harmy! Like usual, your workprints looks stunning. And the last version of the trash compactor scene looked great too.

With the color corrections even more detail pops, with the official Blu Ray it's so dark you can't make out anything in the backgrounds. All the crushed blacks and hot skin tones also get to me. I'm still at a loss that all these issues were not corrected for the Blu Ray release.

Really? I never expected them to fix anything.

Thank you guys for the kind words.

If everything goes well, I should have the last reel workprint up tomorrow.

Then I'll probably make another WP of the whole film to make sure everything is the way it's supposed to be and then I'll try to free up some disc space to be able to encode the whole film in lossless AVI, which I will then use for encoding the MKV, the AVCHD and an NTSC DVD5. I could use help with that - what do you guys think is the best way to encode these?

Great to see the project coming forward, awesome job Harmy. The latest workprint as well as the 2nd version of the trash compactor scene both look awesome.

As I have some spare time at the moment I would be glad if I could help you out with the encoding. Starting from your lossless avi you should create a sample first so that some test encodes could be made to determine settings needed for a transparent encode. The sample should represent the whole movie, so usually you'd use something like 24 frames of each minute of the movie (just an example).

I would use x264 as the encoder for both AVCHD and mkv as it is the best AVC encoder available qualitywise. It can also create Bluray compliant video streams. If the encoding settings are carefully chosen it won't be a problem to import the movie stream into your authoring application to create menus and author the disc.

I could give you a more detailed guide and do some test encodes for you if you want.

Regards Jan

I can PM you some help with the DVD-5 if you need it.

Thanks guys. I am a total avisynth analphabet but I really want to do it right, so if avisynth is the way to go, I'll need a lot of help with that.

Also, I added a comment saying v2.0 DESPECIALIZED to all the shots in doubleofive's comparisons that I fixed in v2.0. It comes to around 280 shots.

Thank you for all your hard work Harmy. It will be enjoyed for years to come.

This looks absolutely amazing, Harmy.  Thank you so much for everything you do in restoring Star Wars to its original glory.  I can't wait for this release.

I was wondering, what are your plans for the audio track?  Stereo, mono?  An option to choose between the two?  Any thoughts on doing an isolated score?

Thanks again!

Anyone remember different camera angles from ROTJ?

There will be a range of mixes to choose from. All three original mixes plus probably the 1993 mix and more.

Well, as long as you don't do any filtering like resizing, debanding, sharpening etc. you don't need avisynth at all, as x264 can index any video that is playable by libav/ffmpeg on its own.

@ Harmy

Do you need the German 2.0 audio track? I can extract and upload it for you if you plan to include it as you did with ROTJ.

I've already edited the German GOUT-audio to be in sync with Harmy's version and at the correct pitch (which the GOUT is not). So if Harmy is interested, he might add this to his release, of course.

Once Harmy releases his new Despecialization there will be a completely German version (including German crawl and Greedo subtitles) in the near future.

I'll definitely want those German tracks, thanks Laserschwert :-)

@Jan: But what program should I use? X264 is a codec, so I assume that I'll need some software to run it, right?

Putting the tracks in sync with HD frame rate is not the problem. I stretched them with MeGUI when DeEd 1.0 was released. Maybe this resulted in a somewhat lower pitch. Do you have any experience in correcting that pitch? Thanks in advance.

The lower pitch is correct. When it was brought from film (23.976 fps) to PAL (25 fps) for all the home video release before the Blu-ray, the pitch got higher, which was, of course, wrong (but never fixed). But the framerate isn't the only thing that needs fixing to make it sync up with Harmy's versions - at least TESB and ROTJ need some trimming as well. You should check the German preservation thread about all this :)

@Harmy: PM sent

I'm not sure what program to use to encode to 264... how about X264 Encoder? I've never used it though, just a quick Google...

Thanks, this would mean everything's alright now. Trimming = delaying the track for 1 or 2 seconds in that case?

Are you going to provide Harmy with the track? Otherwise, I'll do so.

I used MeGUI to get the audio track from the PAL GOUT in sync with Harmys DEED 1.0 version. There is a function to convert the audio track from 25 fps to 23,976 and the audio tracks matched with the video on all three movies after the remux.

MeGUI might be the most powerful tool to make x264 encodings but sadly I must say that I have no idea how to tweak the settings to get the best results.

When I encode a video with MeGUI I simply choose the x264:AVCHD 5/9 2-pass mode for a DVD-R and the movies play fine on my standalone. But there are probably many things that can be tweaked...
