You read right, those soldiers are only part of the new troop footage, in fact that wasn't even intended for that shot, it just happened to work! The rest of the shots are milling the I'm the background or running from the walkers.

Haha, my thoughts exactly.

My attempt at a translation: "The rest of the shots are them milling [around] in the background"

Just saw the clip.  Ady, once again, the thing I believe I'm most impressed with in your edits is the colour timing.  Everything looks perfect... keep up the great work.

I was five years of age when I first saw Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back in 1980. It was an experience that changed my life forever. The characters, planets and concepts were instantly integrated into my heart and the films became the hallmark for every movie I saw afterwards. I was fortunate enough to see Return Of The Jedi upon release back in 1983 and Luke’s journey from farm boy to Jedi Knight was the one story that captivated me like none other.

During the rest of the ‘80’s and mid ‘90’s my love for Star Wars diminished slightly during puberty and all, but it was always there. Whenever I would encounter an image of my beloved trilogy, whether in a magazine or at Disneyland, my heart would blossom and I was reminded about the beauty of the series.

Around 1994 my love for Star Wars returned in full force and I started collecting memorabilia enthusiastically. I discovered the Internet and I learned about the ‘Special Editions’, a project that I was highly looking forward to. The first online image I ever saw was the one of the newly created CGI dewbacks. I thought it was the coolest thing I ever saw and in my mind the Special Editions were destined to be complete winners.

When I saw an image of the CGI Jabba however, the first cracks started to appear in my unquestionable trust in the Special Editions. It didn’t look good. Rontos followed, and various droids, and the more I saw, the more I was worried.

Then I saw the Special Edition of Star Wars back in 1997. I had mixed feelings about it. Some things certainly looked great, but others were very disappointing and actually degraded the film I loved so much. The Jabba scene annoyed me the most; it really disrupted the pace of the film, and the scene wasn’t that good anyway. It was merely there to show of a CGI Jabba.

The Special Editions of The Empire Strikes Back and Return Of The Jedi didn’t help either. It was mostly uneven. I liked the new Sarlacc, but hated the fact that they didn’t fix the matte lines of the Rancor (something that was corrected for the 2004 DVD though). I thought the new wampa was ok, but the newly added footage of Vader boarding his shuttle and arriving at the Executor – like the Jabba scene in A New Hope – disrupted the pace of the movie. Most of it simply felt unnecessary.

But despite my disappointment, there was a new Star Wars movie to look forward to: Star Wars Episode I. This was the film I lived for. The story of Obi-Wan and Anakin, the mysterious Clone Wars and the demise of the Jedi. In my mind, nothing could have more potential to become an intriguing and immensely cool trilogy.

Without going too much into detail, you can probably guess how depressing the prequels were to me. Like the Special Editions, it was the unfocussed and uneven feel to it that disappointed me most. Some things were ok, but other things just ruined the integrity of the saga.

So there I was in 2005. No more new Star Wars films coming out (I never followed that Clone Wars animated stuff) and basically the only versions I watched where the Laserdisc copies of the original, uncorrupted releases. I just couldn’t watch the Special Editions. The added stuff just distracted me too much from enjoying the films I loved since childhood.

At this point thankfully I was married, had a good job, travelled a lot. There was more to my life than Star Wars. But Star Wars proved to be my creative reference to the artistic world around me. Buildings, designs, music, art, everything I would somehow relate to Star Wars. Star Wars however, had become a tarnished entity and its creator, George Lucas, a laughingstock. This was my hero and Star Wars was always the coolest thing in the universe. I felt incomplete as my view on the artistic and critical power of Star Wars had changed.

And then something changed everything: I learned about a project called ‘Star Wars: Revisited’.

Adywan, I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for all your hard work on restoring the trilogy. Your versions may never replace the originals, but they can exist proudly side by side as two separate, equally enjoyable representations of Star Wars.

For me, you have given validity back to Star Wars and I feel you have such a great gift in enhancing these films. Thank you for completely restoring my love for the films and for the future of Star Wars. I am greatly looking forward to your work on Empire and I really hope you will rework Return Of The Jedi too, as well as the prequels.

You are a true artist.

Thank you and all the best,

First of all, great clip Ady. I loved the new mattes and everything else. :)

About a reboot of the prequels, it is a huge step. It is not impossible to fans to edit an entire Sci Fi movie (it was done before, with Star Trek), but it would be a hell of work. I'm sure we have enough talented people to do that, but if that reboot is to be done, it should be taken small steps. I would suggest:

1) First write the script and make a novel with it. This forum and other information from books about the history of Star Wars (and of course the OT) should provide enough information for the script.

2) Once there is a book with a history people agree it makes justice to the OT, one can think about an animation or comic book with the history. This step can be skipped if people are really anxious to film.

3) Make the movie.

An important question would be: A single movie or a trilogy? A trilogy would be great, but it would be 3 times harder and we need to be sure to not tell everything, to avoid mistakes (coff, midchlorians, coff). As we all know, some things are best left unspoken. :) I think a single movie would be more doable. Hell, even GL thought he could do only one movie.

I also hope that a reboot of the prequels should only provide as classic characters Anakin, Obi-wan, the Emperor and Yoda (maybe Tarkin and other small characters) but that's it. Remember, the galaxy is big enough to avoid familiar characters to meet acidentaly. :)

Well, here my thoughts. There's a good chance this dream never become real, but it is sure good to talk about it. :)

Adywan is not going to reboot the prequels, so this conversation should be moved to the "Script Writing and Re-writing" area, please.

Sorry for the off-topic, the idea of the reboot was really great and I forgot we are supposed to talk about ESB:R only.

Nice 1st post there Jayce Skywalker, and welcome to all those directed here by the recent Cracked.com article.

Well adywan, that's another amazing-looking preview!  ( https://vimeo.com/45439199

I've been looking forward to seeing how these particular Slave I shots turned out.  Glad to see it looks like it's actually *landed* on the platform now, rather than seeming to be elevated above it.  The new skies and buildings are terrific as always, and nice to see the platform lights are a uniform colour between the shots now, too.

I note you've mentioned the effects are still not 100% finished in this clip, but here's a couple of trivial things that stuck out for me.  No biggies at the end of the day -

I wonder if the red glow on Vader's sabre in Luke's close-up should be made a little more substantial?  The red glow in this extreme close-up seems a bit lacking overall, when compared to how it looks in the shots before and after that one.

All your skies are looking wonderful, but at the point where our heroes are running down the corridor and we see the tiny Slave I out of the windows, I immediately thought things looked too YELLOWish compared to the more overall ORANGE-looking skies you've done on the shots before and after that one.

And just another thought, but I really liked the subtle SE additions of tiny lights blinking 'on-and-off' on the tops of some of the Cloud City buildings.  For instance, there's a couple of examples seen in the SE background during the 1st shot of Slave I in your comparison.  I definately think they added a little something, and reckon if you added the odd one or two to your replacement buildings in a couple of city shots throughout, it would really bring them to life even more.

Oh, and anyone new should definately click on the 'Wordpress' link in doubleofive's posts to see a whole heap of 'Revisited' info. contained there.

By way of a sequel to doubleofive's earlier redirection, if you have any ideas about adjusting the prequels as they stand (that could include creating and filming new characters or replacing existing ones) any contributions to this thread will be greeted with virtual vol-au-vents and the chink of cyber champagne flutes.

I wondered about this one as well. It seems to be an untouched shot from the SE and I agree that it now stands out VS. Ady's more realistic looking skies.

I would have to concur with ImpFighter.  Here are some screen caps:

Replacing the sky area around the Slave 1 could help it stand out more.  Another thing: what about those 2 stormtroopers that were watching Solo be loaded aboard?  Would we see them walking away on the platform?  Would their bodies be somewhere in the following scenes?

Also, would the buildings in the shot about need to be altered to match the ones in the new shot below?

I would also ask: should the buildings in the "Slave 1 taking off" shot be angled the way they are (as opposed to more level, as indicated by the red line)?

BTW, love those new clouds...

The buildings should be more flat, like you say, if they're taller than the platform, and how they are or having an even greater curve if they're level with or below the building.

Pretty sure they're below it.

I always thought that Slave I is too far off in the distance through that window, especially because the very next cut is to Chewy and crew standing at the platform door.  What about something more like this:

Slave I

I must say, that mockup does make a lot of sense, and since it's using one of Ady's new skies, it also fixes that issue :P

The slave 1 SE shot hasn't had anything done to it apart from colour. I was going to be replacing the whole background. lowering the platform and replacing some buildings for continuity, but the person who was going to be rendering the buildings has stopped replying to my emails, so this will have to wait until after the move. This also applies to the buildings on the take-off shot as these were just placeholders taken from until i got the new renders

As much as I love the new sabers all that ambient steam doesn't seem to interact with them.

Now this is equally true of the original sabers but it might enhance the new effect further if there was a faint opaque steam field which was set to react to light coming from the sabers passing (with a faint illumination of the appropriate hue) near to them in the more distant shots.

It could be programmed to match the motion of the existing steam elements and be only slightly noticed when the sabers and the element interacted.

Is this making sense?

But man, does it look beautiful. It's probably my favorite part of the clip -- and I liked it all a lot. :-) The glows are just gorgeous.

More work for you. ;-)

But seriously, they could be the ones that show up behind our heroes. Turned around when they heard Leia shooting at Slave 1.
