Few months ago, with all the buzz about Double Fine Adventure and Wasteland 2 , a thought popped into my mind… that we’ve failed with all those petitions and letters, yet all we ever needed would be an official Kickstarter project to fund the restoration & DVD/BR release of our beloved movies. Raw numbers preceded by $ would speak to Lucas’ mind - and I’ll bet this crowdfunding project would get more backers and media coverage than some forgotten video game franchise.
Too bad that those big number successful projects emerged only in 2012, opening people’s eyes to Kickstarter possibilities (media talk about a revolution in video game production, as projects rejected by the industry were picked up & funded by the consumers themselves). If only we had such tools earlier - and some good examples to convince others to using this method…

it should be free with no charge if you own it already

I think you misunderstood me: I said official, which means Lucasfilm, not fans. His claims about such restoration being too expensive would be nullified this way - the project backers would prove there's a need and money in this.
Oh ...official... then restart the thread when Lucasfilm starts up the Kickstarter SW Restoration page.
How do you not become a laughing stock when you make bazjillions and yet still ask the public to fund a project. Lucasfilm could completely get away with it, as they are quite beloved but it's humorous on several levels.

As I've said before, Lucas' "too expensive" claim is almost certainly just an excuse. It's not about the money. Lucas can afford to restore the original versions, and he knows it. His refusal to do so is not out of miserliness, but out of stubbornness and ego.
Even if a theoretical Kickstarter project would raise a ton of money from the fans, Lucas would never sign off on such a thing because he just plain doesn't want to restore the original versions, even if it doesn't cost him a dime.

It's weird seeing so many people interested in (or even aware of) Wasteland 2. Is Wasteland really much more popular than I give it credit for, or has it gained a lot more interest due to Bethesda's very successful "sequel" of a "sequel"?
