Is there anything in the EU about the deaths of main characters from the original trilogy?

How does Luke/Leia/Han/any other important character die? Do R2-D2 or C3PO live forever? How far into the future does the EU go?

I discovered the galactic timeline on Wookepedia. It goes back far enough in history (geez), but it doesn't go too far into the future.

I'm only aware of Chewie's controversial death in Vector Prime. I think a moon fell on him?

Luke appears as a Force ghost in the Legacy comics, set over century after the OT, but I don't think it's revealed when or how he died. Artoo is still around and ends up with Luke's descendants in the story.

I know Threepio apparently buys the moisture farm in an issue of Star Wars Tales, but it's more of a one off "What if?" kind of tale that isn't tied to any other continuity. I would consider the SWT stories non canon.

Han also dies in a another story in the same issue. (With one heck of a crossover with another Lucas universe.)

There's a comic book called "Chewbacca" with short stories of the main characters (of the EU) and how they deal with his death.

I have one signed by Peter Mayhew...

I've not encountered any in my reading, but I'm aware of a few from articles discussed here in the past.  No one major other than Chewie and yes, a very small moon crashes into a planet he is on.

I've really enjoyed Zahn's handling of the core characters as they've grown to middle age. Luke and Mara are particularly well written as older adults.  I hope he deals with them as much older adults some day. I'm glad they're still in the EU or we'd be held to past tales.  In the right hands those are fine too (very much looking forward to Scoundrels in December), but you'd always be limited.

Anyway, here are two pages on the thread topic.

Indeed.

In the hands of Zahn, the universe is endless again and the characters are three dimensional.

Which is exactly what's so nice about your site - the vastness of the universe and the depth of the characters.  By the  way, I'm really digging  The Return Of Ben Kenobi.  Great story.

That still makes me laugh and cringe. It's a really attractive display of emotion, as you can imagine.

Han solo was badly wounded.. I pulled the audio cassette out of my
player and  through it at the wall.

I literally pictured a moon falling on Chewie, rather than the moon crashing into the planet.

How could you NOT enjoy The Return of Ben Kenobi or any other Archie Goodwin daily comic story for that matter?!? :)

-Someone, someday, needs to bring back the LIGHT SIDE to Star Wars.  Has anyone else noticed striking similarites between the character of Anakin/Vader and George Lucas, or is it just me?

-It's called STAR WARS. NOT "Episode IV: A New Hope". Kids, get this straight.

-Please read the Archie Goodwin daily SW comics: Too good to be forgotten!

IIRC, in the Chewie comic TK-949 mentioned, Threepio goes around recording stories from friends, family, even a couple foes, and Chewie's dad refers to his son's death that way. And yes, it's Itchy from the SWHS.

I've never read Vector Prime, therefore Chewie isn't dead. From a certain point of view. ;)
