Is the theater where you saw Star Wars still standing ? — Page 2

I first saw Empire (SE Edition) on a screen in Stirling, Scotland with my Grandfather.

The cinema's been re-purposed as a Jehovah's witness church-thingy.

Wow! That looks a lot nicer than the one they have now. Were the screens bigger or smaller than the ones in the current odeon? I saw Tintin and a bunch of other films there and they were pitifully small.

I'm too young (27 years and a month) to have seen the original versions on the big screen in one of their official releases, but the theater where I saw the SE's in '97 and TPM on May 19th of '99 (and twice more in the following weeks .... no, I'm not proud) is now a GYM.

Oh, the irony.

There were three screens. Screen 1 was the biggest and had a balcony. I would say screen 1 was bigger than anything the new multiplex has to offer.

Check out this website. Although the pictures are more vintage, it gives a good idea of what the cinema was like on the inside. Guildford Odeon from pics #918-930. Awesome !

They are not.  I first saw Star Wars at Q Cinema 4 in Millard, Nebraska.  It expanded to Q Cinema 6, then it became Douglas Q Cinema 9. It was closed and demolished in 2008.

http://www.cinematour.com/picview.php?db=us&id=3573

The other was Indian Hills Theater in Omaha.  Saw Star Wars in 70mm. Unfortunately, that landmark was demolished in 2001 due to high renovation costs (and pure greed).

Q Cinema 4 is where I first saw Tommy Jung's poster before the movie came out. That image alone made me want to see the movie.

Ambassador Cinema, Dublin.

This is where I saw Return Of The Jedi. The building still remains but it is no longer a cinema. And no, I didn't see TPM there.

I saw it during it's first run in 1977 at Menlo Park Cinema in Edison, NJ

The theater was torn down quite a few years ago. Saw Moonraker, and Star Trek the Motion Picture there too in 1979.  In 1984/85 I worked there making popcorn and taking tickets.

This large theatre sat at the corner of US Route 1 and Parsonage Road in Edison, outside the Menlo Park Mall. It was one of Northern New Jersey’s large, prestigious theatres that was later twinned in the mid-70s. It played exclusive engagements of both “Star Wars” and “The Empire Strikes Back”, in 70mm.

It was demolished after Cineplex Odeon opened a 12-screen multiplex theatre in the newly rebuilt Menlo Park Mall around late 1991.

Found a couple of pictures of the old cinema in Weymouth, Dorset. U.K.

Here I first saw The Empire Strikes Back in the summer of 1980 while on holiday with my parents. The week before, the film was Bronco Billy with Clint Eastwood. We were second in line for Empire on the opening evening and I remember I kept going over to look at the quad poster. There was an intermission in the film as Luke starts his training with Yoda. I bought the Empire soundtrack (single disc version) and was well happy that holiday.

Cinema status: Now demolished.

Odeon Leicester Square was where I watched EpIV:SE in 1997 and EpI in 1999.  Really nice cinema.  Unfortunately, there are plans to close it.  If it stays open long enough, I plan to watch EpVII there.

I saw ESB & RotJ in Falkirk. The building is still there, but it's now a nightclub. The cinema had closed many years ago, so when it reopened, hugely refurbished it was great to go in and recognise specific areas inside that retained the original features.

The steps up to cinema 1 when the excitement built as you approached the auditorium etc.

Yes, but it partially collapsed years ago due to lack of care for the building.

The Arlington theatre is still standing (though I don't know if it counts since the I saw the SE first in 1997), and I saw all six films there.

Rigoletto in Stockholm, Sweden. Built in 1939. Still standing. Refurbished a few times, last 2012. Largest theatre with the largest screen in Sweden.

I was too young to see the original movies in cinema, but I know they were screened here first in the country.
I was almost about to see the SE here back in '97 before being told about the bad quality of the changes.
I saw AOTC and ROTS here and will again see Episode VII here on opening night, maybe even if it would be in "3D".

BTW. That Yoda doll is not mine, but has travelled the world and met more Star Wars actors than I have. I only had him as guest for a day in 2007. Other Yoda dolls have made world trips later.

My sister saw ESB at a drive-in in Las Vegas in 1980 (I didn't go) but I doubt if it exists anymore, as so many drive-ins are gone. I didn't see SW or ESB until '82 in Florida, but I have no idea what the theaters were called or if they still exist. Same for ROTJ in '83.

This is where I saw many movies as a child. I didn't see SW there in '77 but it played there (see the 9th comment from the top):

http://cinematreasures.org/theaters/3183

The 2 b&w photos they show are actually interior shots, the lighted marquee being at the entrance of one of the screening rooms (pretty sure I saw The Muppet Movie in that very screening room in '79). That part of the theater was designed to look like an exterior street scene, complete with real shops and lampposts. It was quite a place. I understand it was demolished in 2002. Bummer. I remember it being a huge place, and apparently, it was one of the largest movie theaters at the time, having an impressive 11 screening rooms in 1973:
