Hey R2- Holiday Special truely isn't dead...

I opened my hotmail account today, and found a Homing Beacon newsletter (first one in many months for some reason). I thought you might find this paragraph interesting:

Quote

In developing the look of Kashyyyk, the Art Department first turned to the much-maligned 1978 television special to see what had come before. "We watched that on a loop about four or five times, avoided suicide, and went back to work," laughs Church. Though produced on a variety show scale, the Holiday Special's Wookiee world (then called Kazhyyyk -- pronounced, oddly, as 'Kazook') did have an establishing shot of a Wookiee domicile rendered as a painting by Ralph McQuarrie. The set built for the show -- the inside of Chewbacca's home -- was a mix of flashy sci-fi tech and carved-from-wood naturalism.

So, the Holiday Special is still in the minds of the Lucas-ites, as much as some might say that Lucas tries to distance himself.

It's alive! Alive!
The original Star Wars trilogy: Our cultural history deserves to be preserved and should be available to the public like all great works of art!

I watched half of it the other day

Pieces of it are still rolling around in the back of my mind since I saw it as a kid. Even back then I thought it was cheesy-awful! The thing just won't die.

my god, i recently saw that thing for the first time. it is so bad it's good. my favorites include every scene harrison ford is in...he tries so hard to bring some gravitas to the production but there's no helping it. i also like how he and chewie are so lovey dovey throughout, with all the pats on the back and "pal" this and "pal" that, and the hug near the end...oh it just melted my widdle heart. THEN there's bea arthur in the cantina, caterwauling that horrific show tune and flirting with the aliens...fsking priceless. and what about itchy's little VR sex sim, that was disturbing!

huzzah for archival THEATRICAL OT!!!
it is our duty to preserve star wars history...

Damn close to getting it now. 96.7% and my leech speed's gone through the floor ^^;;; Oh well. I'll leave it up awhile when I'm done but I'll need to blast it to make room once I've made an xvid out of it.

Whoo-hoo! Great news! Thanks Starkiller! That thing will never die. I for one am doing my best to keep it alive.

Sheba, we must be about the same age. I saw it as a kid as well. Forgot most of it. I think my psychie was attempting to protect me from further harm. Didn't work. LOL!

Dark Lord, part of the thing are just ridiculous. LOL! I still gets the giggles when I think of the cooking show part. Stir, stir, whip, whip, stir. Just assinine. However, Carrie Fisher singing is something that I think that the public could certainly have done without. Just rotton.

Han, you big wookie hugger.

I just watched the first ewok movie the other day, and OMG, thats awful too. "Mace" that obnoxious boy and the coughing whining girl...damn it was bad (that awful little house on the prarie announcer and music). So which is worse in your mind...the Christmas special or the Ewok movies. I might lean to the ewok movies being worse as the holiday special was intended to be funny to some degree.
16 years I wait and this is what I get???

Yeah, I watched those Ewok movies, too. I don't remember much from those--good thing, too!

If you haven't seen the second Ewok movie yet, you'll be happy to know that Mace gets blasted by the Marauders. We don't get to see it, but it does happen.

i would have to pick the Holiday Special as being worse...
because as bad as those ewok movies were... they had some sort of excitment in them...
unless you consider Bea Arthur or Jefferson Starship exciting?

I still think it should have been included as a special feature with the new DVD set, just to prove there are some things GL can't CG his way out of.

Princess Leia: I happen to like nice men.
Han Solo: I'm a nice man.

It more or less proves what I'd suspected - that Georgie Porgie does indeed have the original, best-quality version of the Holiday Special.

(Unless they watched one of the pirate tapes or DVDRs, but I doubt that.)

Damn. He should release it, along with a Howard the Duck DVD with deleted scenes. And no, I'm not joking, I'd seriously buy both the HS and HtD the second they were released (interestingly, the demand for a legal Howard DVD is quite high, as a matter of fact - the pirate Hong Kong discs with it sell quite well, and I'd even buy one if it wasn't in fool screen).

I actually enjoyed the Holiday Special...so I'd buy it if it were released. It wasn't that I enjoyed it in the way one can enjoy Lord of the Rings or the original Star Wars Trilogy, but I enjoyed it in a perverse sort of way. I liked making up voice-dubs for the Itchy, Mala, and Lumpy, mostly.

Watch me get spammed, flamed, etc. for my next statement...

Maybe we should start a new petition to get Lucas to release the Holiday Special to DVD. There would appear to be some support for the idea...
(I've actually never seen it)

Did anyone else notice in those ewok movies how they have goats and chickens?

I've never seen these films, and I don't want to, but perhaps the presence of these farm animals, combined with that certain "deep backwoods" taboo, explains why there don't seem to be too many Ewok children around. Poor goats and chickens.

LOL! Galahad, I can just imagine what that dialogue would sound like.

Starkiller, well since Lucas has said that if he had the time he'd like to track down every bootleg copy of that and smash it with a hammer, I don't see him authorizing it to be released on DVD. I'd buy it for sure but I'm sure that there isn't that much of a real demand for it.

Hmm, I'm not so sure about buying it now. Maybe to laugh at it.

I'd buy it just to get Lumpy the ugliest wookie. Man, Chewie's kid is some kinda ugly, no wonder Chewie never goes home. Luke's 'Mary Martin' hair is also pretty special
