Okay, there is no such thing as too advanced a floor that you need to CGI it. C'mon, when you look at the flooring that appeared in TPM and AOTC (if you even bothered to pay attention to it), did it really look that damn special that it needed to be CG. Hell no! That is the epitome of laziness. I agree with just about everyone here. And then there's that spoiler shot from ROTS that shows them sitting on green screen boxes because they couldn't bother to construct a simple speeder or whatever it is they are going to be sitting in?!? That's ridiculous.

Actually guys, I think Jimbo did spell the Bard's name right. At least in terms of how Lucas dealt with it. It truly becomes "Shackspeire" with the emphasis on "hack".

Sorry, couldn't resist.

Sheba, I doubt Natalie is even remotely close to you. Honestly, from what I can tell based on what I read on your page, very few women are you.

From what I recall, they actually DID build the Jedi Temple floor as part of the set, but after cutting the film together, decided they weren't happy with how it looked, and since the sets had been struck, the actors all gone off to other projects, it was cheaper to build a digital replacement. Much like ILM often replaced sets and backgrounds with matte paintings (have a look at ILM:The Art of Special Effects, if you can still find a copy....great prints of most of their matte work!). The idea of replacing or adding to what you shoot, building half sets, isn't new.

"Watto, Jar Jar, Dex, Boss Nass....even though they aren't human you just cant recreate the realism of some of their movements or facial expressions..."

But my point is that you don't get even that close with rubber masks. The OTHER "Why Bother" reason is the same reason effect have been used and have continued to evolve since the beginning of the century...because use pushes development, refines and improves the art. Every time you do a shot, you learn something you can use on the NEXT shot. Pure R&D certainly plays a part, but actual practical application of what you learn in R&D drives the artform forward.

Anyways, at least I think we CAN all agree that Lucas needs 1) a writer 2) an executive producer who's not affraid to say "NO George".

Everybody is afraid to say "NO George." He'll just fire you if he doesn't get his way. He's the artist, after all. What he says, goes.

I'm sure McCallum says it all the time... he's the one controlling the strings.

Anyone notice that Star Wars only went downhill when good ol' Rick got involved? He's controlling Lucas' mind, kind of like the King in Two Towers.

I'm sure Ricky says no all the time:

"No, George, I don't think Jar Jar is going to look goofy. Go ahead and use him!"

"No, George, I like the midichlorian idea, run with it!"

"No, George, it doesn't matter who Sifo-Dyas is. Nobody is going to care!"

"No, George, people will accept the love story. They'll eat it up!"

You mean "no, George" like that?

Midichlorian idea was great. Also George stated in the commentary for Attack of the Clones that Sifo-Dyas and the file mystery will be explained in Revenge of the Sith.

I put the Sifo-Dyas thing alongside Anakin's turn to the Dark Side. Once my retinas are seered by CGI run rampant, and I'm exposed to awful dialogue and stiff-as-a-board characters again, I won't really care about either.

Sheba, LOL! For myself, I'm not sure how I feel about the new movie. I want to be excited, but part of me is prepared to be disappointed. I did like AOTC better than the Phantom Plotline, but at this point I'm not holding out much hope.

bad_Karma....I think there's an arguement to be made that SW started going downhill in '83... right around the time Lucas' corporate empire started to take off. Sw was a fight with the studios for just enough money to complete the thing, Empire was using Lucas' own money, but still not the VAST fortune he commanded after Empire, nor the massive company. McCallum didn't get involved until, what, RadioLand Murders? The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles? Both stellar pieces of work. He's also the ONLY one in the Phantom Menace documentary who, at the rough screening, isn't depressed and realizing just how deep the shit is that they're all in.

i still have my doubts about Rick..
i mentioned it in here before that in some documentry footage of Lucas we see him talking to Rick and says "Jar Jar is the key to this movie"
now maybe thats what Lucas had in mind at first... which is fine... but when he gave him the part that he did in the movie...
how is he key??
it didnt make a lot of sense..

but of course Rick nodded with a very concentrated look on his face...
almost as if he was thinking.. what is this guy talking about...
thats just my take on it...

I haven't liked McCullum ever since I first saw him in that Fox special on the SE. That infamous line that would become a cornerstone when I started hating the SE after Jedi. The euphoria of seeing the films on the big screen wore off, and my mother's comment on the absence of the Ewok song set many thoughts into motion. That line, "The essence of the storytelling...had to be sacrified...due to the limits in technology". It says that the old effects caused the story to suffer, a stance I strongly disagree with. After that, I started blaming the SE on Fox(wanting something like ID4 to help sell the rerelease) and Rick encouraging Lucas. That stemed mostly from my respect for Lucas, and the shody work of ILM. Just look at Star Trek: First Contact, released the previous November. The SE can't hold a candle to the realism of the FX. THey look more like Star Trek Insurrection's, which were done by a company that didn't believe in model-aided CGI. All of the ships in the PT are models, loaded into the computer and manipulated. ILM is the master of this stuff. Stand alone CG like Insurrection's can't compare(fortunately Nemesis was done by Digital Domain, the 2nd best, IMO).

He actually said that?! My mind boggles.

It would explain a great many things, though.

Yep Sheba. KJ is right. He said it.

Personally I don't like McCallum. I can't quite put my finger on why, but he strikes me as an ass kisser. I don't see what his purpose is other than to say, 'yes George' to everything. I know he's producer, but really. Isn't a producer supposed to keep a director sort of in check instead of just agreeing with everything?

Luke, the 'Jar Jar is the key to this movie' line is in referrence to the CGI work. What was meant is that if they can pull off Jar Jar, then they were home free as far as the rest of the CGI. Anything after Jar Jar would be a piece of cake. And the world of Star Wars hasn't been the same.

To bad, KJ, that both Nemesis and Insurrection (hmm...actually, everything since WoK, actually) has blown multi packs of goats as films.

You guys want a laugh watch the deleted scenes, play all with commentary. Its hilarious, every scene except the robot scene indentifying the Kamino dart (which I wish could replace the Dex scene with editing of voice)...anyway, every scene they say this really would've given a lot more to the plot or deepened the characters, but in the interest of time those become sceondary. I am thinking, what is this 10 minutes of scenes...plot and characters secondary. OK, Rick and George, but lifeless CGI and silly fart noises, and bright lights and loud explosions thats where its at. They aren't telling a story its mind-numbing crap for the bottom-rung of the ladder in our society (namely those that love Jar-Jar)

I, personally, wouldn't go that far. Just saying that model assisted FX(Nemesis, First Contact, LOTR, etc) tend to work better than ones without(Insurrection). My point was that the SE wasn't up to snuff with stuff ILM had just done. They are better than they've shown, you know it, and I know it.
