According to the back of the books, they're just "special commemorative issue(s) celebrating the return of the Star Wars trilogy to the big screen."

The inside says "This book was previously published as Star Wars #39-44 by Marvel Comics, Classic Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back #1 and 2, and the trade-paperback collection entitled Classic Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back."

There are a few pages of concept art/storyboards in the back of the books though that say "Look for these scenes in the Special Edition of..."

There were Special Edition adaptations put out by Dark Horse.

They did do reprints of the Marvels, but with new duller coloring than the originals.
