The Criterion versions are pretty damned good. They truly treat their movies like they are their own children. That's why they don't offer up too many, because they really want to give each film their full attention.

I have seen The Seven Samurai, The Hidden Fortress, Robocop (the NC-17 rated version that didn't make it to theaters), Chasing Amy, Monty Python's Life of Bryan, and The Royal Tenenbaums in Criterion. They are all very damn good.

In the case of Tenenbaums and Amy, Criterion was elected to release the only version of a relatively recent theatrical release film. Why? I'm not too sure. But I've been happy with the results.
