Good call. I've been getting kind of antsy that the new Cameron-approved transfer will be something like Aliens, with its modern blue-and-orange palette.
There was a 4:3 version released on Laserdisc.

Thanks for the info Harmy, might check this out and see how it compares with the NTSC DVD, you never know these days what digital tinkering they might do when this gets a new release.
We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.
Sincerely, Lynne Hale publicity@lucasfilm.com

Thanks for the tip, I have already found a TV broadcast recording but in crappy quality, so an LD should be better
Does the HDTV keep the film grain? I wouldn't be interested if there was noise reduction applied.
The HDTV version may or may not have any noise reduction applied to it; any grain that may have been is lost due to the high compression/low HD bitrate. Still, even with the lack of fine detail, it's light-years better than the old DVD.

Speaking of James Cameron, has there ever been an HD broadcast of True Lies? That is another film that has only ever had a bare-bones non-anamorphic DVD release with a laserdisc sourced transfer.
For True Lies, not sure if there was ever an HD Broadcast, but there's something even better: a D-Theater tape. I've seen 1080i rips of the D-Theater and they look really good. Some are even more than 20GB. You can find HD torrents easily.
Wow, I didn't think anyone had ever tried ripping that obscure format. I have a D-VHS deck I got cheap, but it didn't have the D-Theater logo, so I never bothered getting any of the tapes. I saw a couple of the movies that somehow ended up in the VHS bin at Big Lots a few years back.

Oh yeah, there are actually lots of rips online. Sorry to get off-topic, but the quality of the D-Theater rips actually is quite impressive to me. They tend to be less compressed than HDTV rips, which suffer from the provider's compression. There are some interesting ones out there, like Alien, which has the original Director's Cut color timing rather than the BD one.
Looks like there was a full screen DVD after all.

I would LOVE to see this transferred in the best possible quality for collectors...I know I'd be watching it.
The D-theater of i am not sure if it was Alien or Aliens. Had more frame information at the sides the original theatrical colors and no extra cgi tinkering.
“Always loved Vader’s wordless self sacrifice. Another shitty, clueless, revision like Greedo and young Anakin’s ghost. What a fucking shame.” -Simon Pegg.
Anyone can track down a new HDTV airing, which is said on boards to be 1280x720 ie 1.77:1 open matte?
It's not the "japan" HDTV release, but a genuine HD version airing in the US. I would love this with a synced 5.1 from the DVD track, and I'm sure many other would.

I have the 1080i JP version ENG audio and the 720p French version if that helps anyone

The 1080i JP version with English audio would be sweet. A solid rip of the Alien D-VHS would be just as sweet if someone has it and can do one.
:)
I wouldn't mind seeing some screen caps of these actually
FYI apparently it's out on Blu-ray in October along with True Lies

They have been saying that for 5 years, its always October!
Didn't Radar O'Reilly once quip that, knowing the Army, it would be "Any time after five o'clock next summer"?
[VERY soft quote: general idea only, but it's stuck in my head for decades.]
“Before the Dark Times. Before the Prequels.”
720p
1080i
The 1080i is a real bitch to work with, crashes every program I try it with and won't even play on my WDTV
The color timing is pretty different in those two HD broadcasts, and the cropping too.
The 1080i is stretched vertically
French HD looks like an upscale. The Japanese 1080i was stretched and out of sync, someone on PB in the reactions gave the right info to sync the track back and get the correct stretching.
They are both old news thought, we need to find a 720p of the 16/9 broadcasts in 1.78:1 open matte.
Wait, there are open matte versions of The Abyss?
I'm so wishing for a blu-ray release now! (Without the new color timing style seen in Terminator and Aliens of course.)
