Well since we're pushing Kickstarter stuff in here now. I guess I'll go ahead and post about a couple.

First is from Stacy Davidson, creator of the Han Solo Adventures. He's looking for funds to start work on his first official game for his new studio Warbird Games. It's gonna be a classic point and click adventure game set in a Edgar Rice Burroughsesque scifi universe (awesome). Check it out!

Second, is for Sierra fans. The creators of Space Quest are back and wanna make a new game. I've only ever played the first King's Quest but Space Quest looks interesting. Check it out.

For the record, I donated and pledged to each of these.  Do you think Space Quest is going to make it?

Spaceventure doesn't look good right now. Daily pledges are just a couple thousand dollars now, and there wasn't any big spike after they released their second prototype demo yesterday.

Tex should be fine, but they're also going to need a small surge to safely beat their goal.

Honestly, I never pledged to Space Quest. I was just posting about it in case there were any fans here. I did however pledge to Tex Murphy the other day after I finally got around to watching their video. =P

I played the remake of SQ1, and then went and got SQ2 and SQ3.  I don't think I ever played SQ4.  I made a pledge to them, because I'd like to see them find success, but I frankly might not even get around to playing the game.

Tex on the other hand...  I'm feeling confident that they will meet their goal... It's at about $300k today.  So they just need $150k over the next 17 or so days.  They've made at least $10k most days (with a few exceptions)... so hopefully it's just a matter of time.  Also, typical kickstarter projects get a large % of their funding in the last couple of days... I'm just not sure how typical this project is.  There are a lot of passionate fans... and then there's everybody else (*cough*005*cough*).  Since the fans have already donated... I'm not sure if we'll see much of a swell at the end.

Humble Indie Bundle 5 is quite a good deal.

Amnesia, Limbo, Psychonauts, and Sword & Sworcery. Bastion, too, if you beat the average.

I just started playing Crysis 2 on Hard.  My guy seems to be a total wrecking machine, but on the other hand, I pretty much am getting blown away by guys that are 100 yards away.  I don't have a sniper rifle, and the zoom on the guns I do have are decent, but not great.  So I'm finding myself taking cover and engaging in white knuckle shootouts with about half a dozen guys as I move from space to space.  If I get caught in the open, it's pretty much over... which sucks since there is no save feature and the checkpoints can be spread out.

It's fine- it's a way to play a game... But I'm hardly Rambo or Master Chief running and gunning.  Am I playing this game right?

I was really not digging this game when I wrote this a couple of weeks back. It's really grown on me since and I think it's all been that I've learned how to play it correctly- but I was also already playing it correctly- if that makes any sense.

I've always wanted games to be more "realistic" and for the tension to be more palpable, and as I've thought of the required game design to pull that off- and that's basically what Crysis 2 is. Even though you're "ultra powerful" you can still only take on 1 or 2 guys at a time. Bullets are still bullets and will still kill you. And death means more because it means losing 10-15 minutes of progress. However, it took me a while to get over the "frustration" part of that experience and to realize that it's what I've been wanting in games.

One of the things that seemed broken to me is that when I saw a room full of guys, my stomach sank a little bit because I was dreading the fight (and re-fight (and re-fight)) and I thought- "I shouldn't be fealing dread... shooting in a shooter should be fun!" But the dread came not because it wasn't fun, but because I realized I might die. So, in that sense, it was exactly what I've been asking for.

Also I've really figured out the sneak/stealth/cloak mechanic. That's helped as well.

Been playing Halo Anniversary with the Mrs. It looks great and plays like the original, but man, the level designs are so repetitive. I know you went through the , now go through it backwards.

The big problem is that co-op doesn't have any permanent checkpoints. Once you start the level, you can't quit unless you want to start it all over again. On Legendary, that sucks.

RE: No checkpoints
Is that a Co-op thing, or just a Legendary thing?

Tex is getting close. Just cleared $350k and has about $95k left to go over the next 11 days. Hopefully it enjoys the big upswell at the end like a lot of other KS projects.

And, in other news, E3 starts today. Please post any shocking news here:

There are checkpoints while you're playing, its just the later games have points where you can just load a location in the middle of the level and play from that point (to reach skulls/terminals). In Halo Anniversary, we have to start at the beginning of the level every time.

You know what really sucks? Even though the wife got achievements for beating each level, something went wrong so her profile only says she beat the first and last level, so she didn't get the achievements for beating the game. We have to do it again.

Ah, I hate when achievement glitches like that happen!

It is kind of funny, when I first got my 360 I really got into the achievement thing, having a goal to accomplish and having the evidence that you did it exist outside of that game was kind of appealing and made accepting the challenges feel more worthwhile.

There was that girl I was dating for a couple of years, the one you splitscreened with 005. She wasn't into the achievement thing at all before she met me, even though she was a lot more into video games than I was. Somehow my achievement obsession wore off on her and we both became pretty hardcore achievement hunters. It was a lot of fun working together and helping each other get multiplayer achievements and cheering each other on as we took turns in the pursuit of single player ones. Looking back at all the time we spent on getting a few silly achievements seems like a really ridiculous waste of time, like Mad Moxxi's Underdome riot to name one notorious one (we've got every achievement for all of Borderlands), but we had a ton of fun doing it... well, it wasn't always fun... sometimes it was very frustrating, but the sense of accomplishment and high fives at the end were worth it.

Anyway, after all of that for some reasons achievements aren't very important to me anymore. Not having someone else as excited about getting them as me to work with kind of kills the whole thing. Since splitting up this girl and I still play together from time to time, but the last few months we've both been too busy for games and living a million miles apart kind of took away from the achievement earning buzz.

Not sure why I just wrote all of that. 005's story of Mrs. 005 not getting credit for beating the game on legendary brought back a lot of memories of how fun that sort of thing can be as a couple. You're pretty lucky, 05, to be married to a woman who will not only play Halo with you, but will play it with you on legendary, and not only play it with you on legendary, but play it with you twice on legendary because she is determined to have all those achievements too. It is pretty rare.

Been watching some of the Microsoft presentation from E3, some interesting things coming up.

The Halo 4 stuff was definitely interesting, I think MC spoke more in that short clip than he did in the entire first trilogy.

The live action clip was also cool - at first I thought it was a lead-in to the upcoming webseries (forward unto dawn) but apparently it's just a standalone trailer.

one thing I noticed was that the sound effects seemed overly beefy, but then it might have had something to do with the quality of the video..

anyone else see that Doom 3 is being re-released? and that it's being released in the midst of all these upcoming blockbusters, I'm curious to see how this plays out - apparently it comes with the older games plus its own expansions but it's a game you can go buy for $5 or less these days...

They throw around words like re-mastered but i'm wondering just how much - or how little - work they are putting into that, from the teaser trailer it doesn't look like they've done anything, and apparently they've been workng on it for over a year.

I didn't hear Doom3 was getting a re-release.

I bought that for Xbox (I think it plays on 360 as well) and put a couple of hours into it. I played all of the old Dooms, but probably mostly because they were the only game in town at time. Doom3 seemed like it wasn't doing anything for me at the time. One of my first 360 titles was Quake4, and I was really looking forward to it. I got half way throgh and then sold it.

They're repackaging it, with all of the other Dooms. I don't think it's getting an enhancement, though they are going to redo the controls so console players can hold a gun and a flashlight at the same time.

So, I was in Gamestop the other day and impulse purchased a burgundy DSi XL. Gorgeous device, perfect condition, pristine screens and scarcely a light scratch to be found on the top exterior. Ever since the DSi XL came out I have really wanted one, and every time I've seen the burgundy model on demo somewhere, it has made me want to turn around and buy one.

I've been using an old silver original model DS. Probably the absolute ugliest looking device Nintendo has ever released. So an upgrade was long over due, and seeing the price drop, discovering it was in perfect cosmetic condition, and being that it was the burgundy color, I broke down and impulse bought it on the spot.

Never having used a DSi before, getting it home and booting it up I was struck by how archaic the menus seem, and how lousy the DSware store pickings are. Running games on it on those massive screens is extremely pleasant though. And not getting hand cramps using it is nice.

But now I am kind of thinking about taking it back to GS before the return period is up and instead throwing the money at a 3DS. I kind of feel like if I am going to spend nearly $100 on something like this, I might as well put it toward the current model. I've never had that much interest in a 3DS, but there are a couple of games I'd like to play on it, and it still does everything my old DS/new DSi XL can do. Plus it will interact with my friends' 3DSes and it has the modern Nintendo store rather than the poor excuse that was the DSiware.

Tough call, since I've wanted this exact unit since hearing about it, and those huge screens are fantastic.

I don't know, man, tough call... Personally, I think the XL is to big. And even if you don't use the 3D, it's a fancy system, we have something like a dozen vintage games downloaded. Its pretty neat.

Our you could wait for the eventual 3DSXL. ;-)

If there was a 3DS XL, I think I'd go out and grab one. Fondled my friend's 3DS today. Pretty slick. He had me play Kid Icarus for a bit, not really impressed at all, but the 3D was kind of neat. He had the original Zelda game on it, so I played that for a bit, controls felt kind of weird with the d-pad being so low and the circle pad didn't feel right for it at all. In comparison to the XL, the screen is really tiny. Even though the 3DS has a bigger screen than my original silver DS, the screen is smaller when playing old NES virtual console games, so it would even be a downgrade in screen size from my old DS, which I use to emulate old Nintendo games on all the time. After messing with his 3DS I went home and played some Zelda on the DSi XL. I think that sold me, it looked really nice on that big screen and the controls felt a lot more comfortable.

Plus it looks like there may be more issues with homebrew and emulation on the 3DS, which is mostly what I use it for. Virtual console is an option, but I've already paid full price for these games once and still have them all, paying $5 - $10 dollars to repurchase them seems silly.

Holy Carp!

Tex Murphy Kickstarter is blowing up today. They've been averaging about $9k a day for the past couple weeks. Today's haul so far is about $30k and I'd guess will be $40k by tonight. They only need another $50k to reach their goal, and have 9 days to do it.

I almost be surprised if it's funded by this time tomorrow at the rate it's going.

Whoppee!

It's all due to a clever scheme they've concocted. At $380k ($70k from the goal) they announced that they had seven backers who would pledge $4k every $6k between $380k and $450k. Meaning at $386k raised by the group, the first of the seven would donate $4k to take it to $390k. Then at $396k, the second of the seven would donate $4k to take it to $400k. And so on through to the end of the goal. I have no idea if they're the firsts to do this, but it seems to really be working for them.

The rumor is that there's a 3DS redesign in the works. Rumors have especially exploded this year with Nintendo, but that one might be one to take some stock into - because, unlike the other more ludicrous ones, this one has stuck around for some reason. I'd hold off, C3.
