American Graffiti wasn't bad, Luke.

oops... i should have been more specific...
i was just talking about SW...

jimbo ROTJ destroys your little cartoon entitled AOTC...
but i understand that being of your intelligence... you need a lot of action to hold your attention and a very simple story...
i now know why you like the movies you do...

I've got an e-mail out to Jay right now, seeing if he'll condone us contacting Criterion. It would be great if a number of us would be able to contact them and mention the petition and what not. If enough people communicate the desire that Criterion track down the originals, we have more of a chance of seeing them on DVD than if we just did nothing.

That would be so awesome, I will help in any way too...though R2 and sheba are right, Lucas' grasp is tight on all star wars. He is the web nazi, closing down board, squelching rumors, etc. He is the one that shrewdly made a deal with the original film to have all the merchandising rights. Still criterion, hmm, that's more of a dream than just a Lucas OT release (non-perverted of course).

The Criterion thing could work simply because of how expensive the discs are. Figure they'd price them at 39.95 each...and you're talkin almost 200 dollars for the OOT. Factor that in with the numbers who'd buy it (it'd be big consdiering many are upset about the changes and the completists who aren't) and it could be a nice profit. Fox has no deal with Criterion for ANY of their films though...they're quite possesive.

About ROTJ, I must say that it's got much more going for it than any of the prequels. Not only is it the climax, but it is masterfully directed by the late and great Richard Marquand (so sad he didn't get to keep on directing, he was quite talented). The atmosphere is steely and dark on the Empire's ships, and lush with green on Endor. The two styles get to clash wonderfully during the final battle, and this one definitely has the highest production values. Lucas got his hands on the script for this one, but aside from the Ewoks (who are tolerable in my opinion since they did almost kill the heroes and played drums with a stormtropper head...can't say that for the Gungans) Kasdan works his magic again especially in any scene with Luke or Vader.

The prequels have there merits, but they have yet to achieve any sense of timelessness like the OT. Nothing new or exciting is presented in them. Revenge of the Sith could surprise everyone, but let's use the confetti for New Years 2005 just in case.

its always been my least favorite... but im not saying that its bad...
its just not as great as the other 2... but still a fine movie...

well since Lucas said these no longer exist to him... maybe Criterion could use that to their advantage simply in making these movies available...
someone has to stand up to him!!

Criterion would be perfect they would preserve and not pervert the classic. They would not add new scenes, not cut in new actors and voices, not add little cg creatures here and there...it would be the best picture and sound of the original (although I'd love to see a lost cut of the original on a second disc). At the very least I can see them doing a New Hope because it was so groundbreaking.

Ah, but if you do one, you have to do all three. But I have no doubt that if Criterion did try to release them, the set would be more than worth it.

Hot Rod: Criterion is a film preservation company that has managed to pull films out of the vaults over the years, restored the print, and released them to the public. They're more expensive than studio releases, but (though I haven't seen one yet) the DVDs are supposed to have superior quality over standard DVDs. Criterion's released many of Kurosawa's and Hitchcock's films, among others. (Okay, I take that back, I did see the Criterion version of Rebecca, now that I think about it).

The Criterion versions are pretty damned good. They truly treat their movies like they are their own children. That's why they don't offer up too many, because they really want to give each film their full attention.

I have seen The Seven Samurai, The Hidden Fortress, Robocop (the NC-17 rated version that didn't make it to theaters), Chasing Amy, Monty Python's Life of Bryan, and The Royal Tenenbaums in Criterion. They are all very damn good.

In the case of Tenenbaums and Amy, Criterion was elected to release the only version of a relatively recent theatrical release film. Why? I'm not too sure. But I've been happy with the results.

I heard back from Jay yesterday concerning contacting Criterion. This is what he said:

I actually have already sent Criterion a suggestion regarding the
trilogy. No response as of yet. Feel free to tell the other forum members to
send something if they like. They can mention the site if they want.

Perhaps we'll get some sort of response if several of us contact them within a short space of time. I'm already planning on doing so, and think it would be cool if others did too.

The only problem is that I've never seen a Fox film on Criterion. They don't lend their movies out to other distrubutors AFAIK.

Not true. Fox just entered a deal with Criterion which included the release of several 70s art house titles, like Altman's 3 Women. Beyond the Valley of the Dolls is scheduled to be released by Criterion soon in all its X-rated glory. Roger Ebert will be beaming with pride (and likely provide a commentary).

Princess Leia: I happen to like nice men.
Han Solo: I'm a nice man.

That's encouraging. I wasn't aware Fox had done this

I know; it gets the first big obstacle out of the way. I'm planning on sending a message to Criterion tomorrow.
