Awesome! Is that logo your work? I was looking around for one of those after it was mentioned in this thread but wasn't sure what they look like since i'm in Canada. That is what it would have looked like back in the day? What trailers are you using?

And thank you msycamore. :)

I should have properly credited See No Evil for his excellent recreation in my earlier post - I only modified it to represent Alien. I'm running the card through Digieffects AgedFilm to make it look like it's been doing the rounds a few years (though I'm resisting the urge - for the moment - to do the same to the film itself!)

As for trailers, the reel currently comprises Starcrash, Superman the Movie (teaser), Star Trek: the Motion Picture, Zombie, the Black Hole and Moonraker. So it's more representative of all of 1979 than any particular month! Any further suggestions? I can certainly share the result once the edit's done...

Jonno, I'm watching your AVCHD version now. It's a great experience. Much thanks. Obviously, kudos to msycamore for the rip. It sounds nice.

If you're asking about movies from 1979, then I would suggest The Amityville HorrorApocalypse Now, Escape from Alcatraz, The Jerk, Mad Max, Phantasm, and Rocky II. You can also put the early teaser of The Empire Strikes Back, with just concept art; sure the movie came out in 1980, but the teaser may have been out in 1979.

I can certainly share the result once the edit's done...

With those trailers and that rating card, that sounds like a properly wonderful release. I'd love to see it as well.

Not bad, how cool isn't that, that's how you geek out! It can't be the real thing can it? Anyway, everything looks extremely well made. :)

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

There was actually two teasers of Empire in theaters back in '79, the one with McQuarrie concept art and the one featuring the Harrison Ford? narration.

Interesting. Didn't know that.

Wait a second, out of curiosity, didn't Superman come out in '78? Unless you mean the teaser of Superman II...

No, not the real thing sadly (as far as I'm aware, only two jackets were made for the production - Bob Burns has the Kane jacket, I have no idea where Dallas's ended up).

It's just a painstaking recreation - there's a whole thread on the RPF forums about Nostromo uniforms if you're interested in such things!

You're right of course. I was working from a list of the biggest box office movies in 1979 - it never crossed my mind that Superman was still on release from the previous year.

The Empire teaser sounds like an apt choice - what's the best source for the McQuarrie version? The 2004 bonus disc?

I guess the one on the 2004 bonus disc is in best quality but it's quite severely cropped, here's a comparison with the 4:3 version on the Editdroid extra features DVD.

Original '79 teaser in 4:3 - Editdroid DVD:

Original '79 teaser in 16:9 - 2004 Bonus DVD:

It also seems to be a different variation from the one found on the editdroid extras DVD as it lacks this crude early logo at the end:

If this bother you, I would suggest the second '79 teaser mislabeled as Launch Trailer on the 2004 DVD, that one is in very good quality. I don't know, maybe there's a better version of the original teaser on some fan disc out there.

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

 (Edited)

I've made some improvements to my edit of msycamore's PCM 70mm mix transfer, and it now syncs perfectly to the BD video - if anyone would like to add it to their own BD rip (legally, of course) PM me for a link.

There are some good tips on adding new audio to BD video in the Jurassic Park thread if you need them.

I'd be glad to hear of any improvements I can make to it - I think I got the vintage about right, but an anachronism or two have very likely slipped in!

A 1080p MKV can be supplied on request if you'd like to splice this onto the front of your own Alien presentations.

That was great!

I was a bit thrown off during the first 10 minutes - I wasn't familiar with the British content. Were product commercials that common in the UK back then? I really don't remember anything like that over in the US.

My 2 minor quibbles:

  • The voiceover for the Star Trek trailer seemed to only be in the left channel. Is that right?
  • The Black Hole trailer was 4:3.

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

Thanks Erik, glad you like it.

A reel of product commercials has been a standing fixture in UK cinemas since the 1960s - there are many whole reels (of various vintages) on Youtube if you go looking. The cigarette industry in particular thrived in this arena (especially in the period after tobacco advertising was banned on television) hence the very creative and expensive commercials on display here.

Re. the Star Trek trailer, this is from the DVD, and has a 5.1 mix - the strange panning was part of the original (though here it's folded down to simple stereo).

The Black Hole trailer is also from DVD. I haven't been able to find a 16:9 version anywhere, and cropping would destroy the (already cut-down) image so I had to leave it as-is - not very satisfying, I know. Any thoughts on where I might find a widescreen version?

Man I love this place...

Just recently picked up the bluray boxset which was on sale and since I'm seeing Prometheus (in IMAX 3D tomorrow... sort of like 70mm haha) tomorrow afternoon thought it might be worth while re-watching Alien (which I have only seen once before I should mention).

I don't have a fancy surround set up at home (yet) and so normally I try to opt for 2.0 mixes when I can but was intrigued by this 4.1 mix, especially since it was for the Theatrical Version only (the version I watched).

A quick google led me here. Of course, it doesn't seem anyone has a definitive answer as to where the heck this mix came from but whatever.

Regardless, I'd love to see this special 70mm mix synced to the BRD video if at all possible... thanks in advance.

Also, might I add, what a film. So, so, so good.

Nicely done intro reel, Jonno! Like that you used the trailers for Zombie and Phantasm.

I've had some success with marrying up msycamore's excellent PCM rip of the 70mm mix with a 720p version of the Blu-ray video.

The result, as it stands, is a Blu-ray/AVCHD format disc which fits on a single layer DVD. No menus or other fancy stuff, just the movie with superb audio.

If you'd like to see/hear this, let me know - it's certainly a good stop-gap until the 5.1 version is succesfully ripped, and I should think a few of us are planning on re-watching the original movie ahead of the release of Prometheus NEXT WEEK!

Whoa, how did I miss this? I'd love to hear this before seeing Prometheus eventually. PM sent!

was thinking about this

if someone was successful to rip the 5.1 audio from the THX laserdisc and sync it up to the 1080P Video from the BD

2 things that i thought of..

1, wouldn't the star fields have to be redone as they were corrected for the 2003 re-release and subsequent HD releases

2, wouldn't the video have to be cropped to 2.20:1 for an authentic 70mm presentation?

If you refer to the two shots without a starfield, they were restored to their original state for the Blu-ray. There's actually a few re-composites in the 2003 re-release as well, not sure how they treated those for the Blu.

I have not forgotten about this project, I'll just need to find the time to do it.

Jetrell, Jonno might still have the links, I don't know.

Jetrell Fo, you should have a PM with the info now.

I'm certainly up for a V2 if the 5.1 does become available, though in that case it might be easier to sync the picture to the sound rather than vice versa!

Anyway, anyone who's got a copy of this project should pester Bigrob for his fantastic cover. Rob, are you happy to share it here?
