I'm guessing this won't be ready in time for May 4 =)

Yay!

"Changing classic movies at all is just wrong." Puggo

"HA, Ha, you r ghey" was probably a hilariously insulting comment in Elementary and Middle School, but its not cooly insulting anymore and its certainly not funny: it makes people who say it look like, well, an "inbred monkey." TheSessler

"I'm still %20 the wiser. It amused me that after doing a google image search for "The Final Milf" the second picture is Roger Delgado followed by lots and lots of porn." Bingowings

Yeah, I was hoping, but there's no rush.

I'm still betting this and the 35 come out around the same time frame, though.

Didn't want to be that guy, but I guess I'll bite again. Any word on when this will be released?

My $0.02 is to wait until Adywan releases his SW5:TESB Revisited and then watch the sparks fly! :)

REQUEST ------

I have an idea for the PSB menu, and to realize this idea, I need a video of someone's pet mouse (or pet rat) on a bluescreen (or greenscreen).  The mouse doesn't have to be doing anything in particular - just wandering around or sniffing would be fine.  Pooping would be cool, but not required (I can produce that using digital effects).

Most of you who have been following the project can probably easily imagine what I have in mind.  Any of you out there have a pet rat or mouse?  Might anyone volunteer to get a piece of blue or green posterboard, shine some reasonably flat lighting down on it, and use your camcorder to video him/her from about a 45 degree angle, walking around on the blue/green background?

All I can offer is eternal fame and glory for you (and particularly for the mouse) in a prominent spot in the credits.

No offence to Puggo but I'm not a fan of that idea. :P I think it's funny but it  would take something away from a professional point of view since you've worked so hard on this.

I agree, I thought the menu for Puggo Grande was perfect and really set the mood.

I'm sure the mouse could find a place in a featurette, though.

Puggo my daughter has 2 quite large pet rats(I know!) ones brown and ones white.  I will have a go at trying to film them with a green background and floor if you want.

PS: They make great pets if anyones interested.

Indeed, rats are awesome pets.  I've had several and they have great personalities and are incredibly smart and friendly.

I'll take the feedback to heart... it's just an idea, and if done would be subtle enough that the average viewer wouldn't know there is a backstory.  I'd nix any pooping, based on the comments.  If I can't accomplish something appropriate, then a featurette is a great idea.

I have to keep reminding myself that even though I consider these restorations primarily for providing research material, some folks actually seem to enjoy watching them :)

It looks as though a curved mask won't be necessary for PSB, and I'll be able to use a straight one.

However, I have two questions/requests related to this step:

- Should I be able to squeeze/stretch PSB identically as I did for the PG?  Although the two movies may originally have been different aspect ratios (were they?), I assume that shouldn't matter, because the 16mm versions would have been set up to look correct through the same scope lens. So I should be able to use exactly the same strech as PG, right?

- The ESB 16mm sources have curved corners (you can see that on the frames posted on my website), whereas PG did not.  I can leave them exposed or mask them.  Any preferences out there?  I suspect it may be easier on the eyes if I mask them, but I'd like to hear the opinions of the learned folks here.

Hi Puggo, I don't know about your latest version, but here is a post from earlier that shows some settings: http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Puggo-Strikes-Back/post/487463/#TopicPost487463

There is a screenshot with my xvid4psp settings based on the sample clip you provided.  Each scene needed to be cropped slightly differently to get it right.

For the edges, I would leave everything exposed and crop all the way to the edge of the useful picture so you will see the curves.  Maybe you could post some screenshots showing what it would look like.

Also, I think I used VirtualDub to split each scene into separate AVI files at the beginning, then resized/cropped and encoded each scene individually with xvid4psp to 1280x720 lossless avi, then I used xvid4psp to open the first scene, join all the rest, and encode to 1280x720 mp4.

Here is the video again: http://www.sendspace.com/file/lf8yq9   There is still some blue glow on the top and bottom sometimes, so I didn't crop enough in all of the scenes.

It is further complicated in that my first release will be a DVD5, with anamorphic flag set.  So it has to be vertically squeezed just enough so that when the anamorphic flag stretches it will turn out correct.

When you say "see the curves", do you mean see the original curves, or crop them with curved borders?  The reason I find the exposed curves a bit distracting, is that the created border is hard, whereas the curves in the film corners are fuzzy.  The combination of hard and fuzzy borders is a bit distracting.  Also, one jiggles and one doesn't.

Yes, I meant the original curves.  If they are consistent, then you could mask them and not lose anything.  In the case of a DVD5, most likely you can use the same settings as the PG.

Ok, I put together a straight-sided mask with little round corners that match the film pretty closely, and I think it looks really good.

But now, between all the resizing, brightness leveling, and complicated masking, it's going to take 3 days to render this beast!  83 frames in 5 minutes, yowza!  See you folks on wednesday!?
