Star Wars 1982 Rental Copy Preservation (Released)

Is there any interest in this?

I made a copy of my Rental tape a while ago and considering the tape is exactly 30 years old this month (released May 1982) it seems like it may be a good time to let it loose.  Not to mention I am kind of on hold again with my Droids Series preservation.

Lineage…

JVC 9600 SVHS -> Hauppauge card on PC -> Virtualdub cleanup using Avisynth just for IVTC and slight levels control -> MP4

There is no noise reduction or color adjustments.  Might as well see it warts and all.  And I figure with it being a 30 year old tape, a preservation is kind of now or never.

And I would just upload the video as an MP4 because I honestly can’t tell the difference between that and a DVD and the year is 2012.  Time to get with it.

Also, if anybody wants to do some screenshot comparisons with the other preservation’s I think they will find that the 1982 laserdisc actually has a different pan&scan edit as well as a slightly more zoomed in framing.

If there is any interest in this I can get it uploaded to MySpleen this holiday weekend.

I'd be interested in a MySpleen upload. I made a transfer myself and would be intrigued to see how they compare.

Looks better than the old transfer I have. I'd love to have a copy

I think it looks better than my Finnish rental VHS straight capture and the colors seem a lot darker (better). Nice work. Was it PAL or NTSC?

Wow that looks like a nice clean transfer - definitely interested in seeing it

This was the NTSC version.

And it is up on MySpleen!

(my first torrent upload in years and years!)

Thank you very much for this preservation. I havn't had chance to watch the whole thing yet but skipping through this looks a much crisper/detailed and colour-rich capture to the Starkiller preservation. Because of those qualities in combination theres a much better depth of field. For example in this frame you get a much better sense of the length of the corridor (I think) whereas other captures look much flatter

You've also miraculously managed to salvage a nice 'texture' from the VHS (I don't really know how to describe it properly other than to say it looks less 'blobby' and less 'in the way' than VHS usually looks). Great salvage job!

One (possibly) unique thing about this print is it seems to be one of the few that is still holding on to a fraction of the deep blues and greens which seem to have been originally there in this scene:

Yes, the transfer used for this VHS was later recycled for the 1985 LD, the '82 LD/CED and the HBO broadcast was a different transfer.

If I can veer off topic for just a second...

Can anyone comment on whether the NTSC pan and scan VHS versions from 1990 and 1992 are from the same source (and/or if any additional processing was done for those releases)

I'm mainly interested in whether the colours would therefore be the same for pan and scan vhs tapes from 1982 up to 1993.

Interesting that your rental copy didn't have the FOXVID-code in the upper corner like Starkiller's tape had:

Have no idea if they recycled the same transfer on other releases, there's a possibility however that the '92 VHS got the same treatment as the widescreen tapes that year; a new video master was created from a different IP and used from then on.

Going by the box held up in this video (90 or 92 version?) it seems the clips within match more or less the 82 version (albeit slightly different cropping?) when I played this much-appreciated-to-have(!) preservation alongside -

The transfer on the 1990 and 1992 pan and scan tapes was identical to all the VHS releases since 1982. My copy was from '92, and you still couldn't see the Tusken Raider in Luke's binoculars.

The only difference between any of the VHS'es is that the ones from 1985-92 have the new "digitally mastered" sound mix with 3PO's tractor beam line. All of the 82-92 P&S VHS releases have the wrong (80s) Fox logo at the front, proof that the same video master was used for that whole time (though at least the 1985 mix has the correct fanfare).

There is only a cosmetic difference between the 1990 and 1992 versions. The CBS/Fox Video logo and "Collector's Preview" intro screen/announcement were replaced with a Fox Video logo and preview intro screen/announcement, and the CBS/Fox mentions on the packaging and labels were replaced accordingly.

Everything from the trilogy preview to the end of the tape are identical to the 1990 version, right down to the long copyright screen at the end of the trailer that still mentions CBS/Fox, and the unchanged "Check for title availability..." and "Feature presentation" screens.

In fact, the 1992 versions are sometimes hard to spot without watching the actual tape. Why, you may ask? Because some of the 1992 copies still had CBS/Fox boxes and/or labels! My old 1992 copies of ESB and ROTJ came in 1990 CBS/Fox packaging with CBS/Fox labels. Even my 1992 copy of ANH, which did come in a Fox Video box, still had a CBS/Fox label!

In short, don't bother. The 1990 version only has the new trailer, and the 1992 is for all intents and purposes the same as the 1990.

Funny. My own Rental Copy has those same markings. Anyone have an explanation for the difference? What would be the cause for variations within the same release/pressing?

I was wondering the same thing.  The only thing that I can think of that looks different on my VHS cover is this sticker for the Canadian Twentieth Century Fox office.

You can see that on most others it isn't there.

My tape doesn't have the yellow'ish tape cover.

So maybe there are different production runs of this rental tape?

I was wondering if the aspect ratio might be off ever so slightly at the beginning of this source tape. The image seems just a fraction too tall at the start? or my imagination?

edit: thanks TServo2049 for info above on 1990 and 1992 vhs tapes -except another dead end for a different transfer! I don't know if this has been answered elsewhere but would all sources for vhs releases worldwide be based on primarily on the US or UK source?

I have this tape and it still has not gone to tape rot.

The laserdisc's of the 1982, 1983 or 1985 pan and scan however all have different levels of laserot.

Interesting enough my 1982 LD is almost unaffected only minor rot with an X-0 player you would probably get a pristine transfer out of it.

The 1983 though is so badly gone i won't run it in my laserdisc player for fear of breaking it.

The 1982 print looks almost new and sharp in comparison to the 1985 version which by that time was badly color shifted.  By the time they looked at existing masters or the negatives in 1993-1994 the amount of color loss must have been considerable.

The CRE stock used in the optical effects is completely gone as far as i know that is why the effects had to be recomped or recreated in 1997.
