This thread is dedicated to all the myriad colours lightsabers beyond blue, red, green, and the occasional Mace Windu (yuck) purple. May the rainbow live long and prosper. Lucas' white bread vision can suck it!

I've been watching the picture in the OP for ten minutes straight, and it hasn't changed once.

Hmm wonder why there are no other colors really than your basic blue red green yellow and purple.

Where's like a brown saber? Long thin poop wand?

I hate to back up the prequels in any way, but IIRC, AOTC had blue, green, yellow, purple and red sabers. That's more colors than in the OP pic. What colors were you hoping for?
There were no yellow sabers, but I can't blame you for blocking out AotC.

There were no yellow lightsabers in any of the prequels. Only blue, green, red, and Mace's purple.

Over the years in the EU a massive variety of colors have been mentioned from black to rust colored and everything in between.

I'm sure you guys would know more than I, but when I left the theater the only thing I liked about the film were the 2 yellow lightsabers that were shown when all the Jedi start lighting up all over the arena. I remember one was close-up right side of frame (not the focus of the shot though) and the dude had some kind of dinosaur head. The other was in the distance and he (or maybe she) was show again during the fight at some point. But if you say they weren't there, I believe you. I haven't watched the film in almost 10 years and I'm not going back to find out!

I remember thinking there were yellow sabers in AOTC after exiting the theatre as well. Later, when I checked the DVD, I realized that it was probably just an optical illusion caused by the proximity of green sabers to yellowish sand.

Well, the movie would be just as bad no matter what colors the sabers were, so I guess it doesn't really matter.

When I was a small boy I often wondered if there was any significance in the lightsaber colors. Like maybe in the old times the color would associate you with your rank (knight, master, whatever) or if you just picked the color you like best.

And here's a question for those in the know: Didn't Mara Jade have a purple blade? I've always had that in my mind, long before Sam Jack had his, but since Ep. II, everyone talks like Sams was the first and only purple blade in the galaxy. I didn't read the comics and really can't remember seeing any art related to the character so maybe I just made that up while reading the novels long ago.

Definitely had a purple saber.

Retconned away, I'm sure.

Yay! I just gave myself ten points!

So her having a purple one has been retconned away? Why? How does that muddy Georges water?

Mara's purple lightsaber hasn't been retconned away, and I've got a poorly drawn book cover to prove it.

They did retcon away Darth Bane's purple lightsaber, though, which is sad, because that's the only thing about him I liked.

Being a contrarian, I've always been intrigued by the idea from early Star Wars that all lightsaber blades were in fact the same color.

What that color is, though, varies. ;)

In Lucas' early scripts for ANH, the only color mentioned for lightsaber blades is red. In the first draft, it's even stated that the film's hero Annikin Starkiller wields a red saber: "The startled Annikin backs away in horror, then settles down and ignites his lazersword, which creates an eerie red glow."

This was carried over into the Marvel Comics adaptation of ANH, in which all sabers were colored red.

Marvel artist Howard Chaykin's ANH poster provides another good example:

The original version of the ANH sabers, meant to be an effect achieved "in-camera," attempted to depict uniformly white saber blades.

However, it looked so poor on film that rotoscoping had to be used instead. This of course led to the incorporation of different colors for "hero" and "bad guy" lightsabers, an idea derived from Ralph McQuarrie's production paintings.

(McQuarrie in fact gave Vader a blue saber and his opponent a yellow one.)

On the SW Blu-Rays, there's a short clip in one of the documentaries, showing an early effects test for the lightsabers. Footage was shot of two men "dueling," which was used to test three different blade colors: red, blue, and white. In all of the tests, both lightsaber blades are the same color.

Splinter of the Mind's Eye describes both Luke's and Darth Vader's lightsabers as blue. Luke's saber has a "powerful blue beam," and when Leia wields it we see "a slashing flare of blue light." Later on Vader is seen "swinging his saber until it was no more than a blue blur in the dank air."

This description fits well with this early publicity photo from ANH, which, due to an accident of airbrushing, gives blue sabers to both Obi-Wan and Vader:

Even as late as the ESB novelization, Vader's saber is described as "the blue flame of a just-ignited laser sword."

To close this post, I'll leave you with a Marvel 1970s treasury-size reprint of its first SW issue. The cover used one of the drawings shown above, but with different coloring, so Luke ends up with a white lightsaber.

“That Darth Vader, man. Sure does love eating Jedi.”

What most people seem to forget utterly is that Mara Jade actually uses a blue lightsaber.  At the end of The Last Command, Luke gives her his old weapon as a gift, and in Vision of the Future she is stated to still be using the same one.

Since VotF is the grand finale of the Star Wars story (I do not acknowledge the existence of virtually anything that follows), it can be asserted that she still uses the lightsaber that once belonged to Luke's father.

Works that portray her time as the Emperor's Hand do show her using a magenta lightsaber, but following her master's death she did not possess this weapon any longer.  Anything showing her with this blade color that is not of that time period is a continuity error.  It's not altogether surprising that these details are overlooked, since most artwork tends to show her in leather catsuit type outfits, but if you actually bother to read you'll easily discover that this bears no resemblance whatsoever to Zahn's descriptions of her.

Wouldn't that be a green lightsaber then? Luke lost his blue  one at Cloud City.

I see George wrote everyone a memo decreeing all Jedi have to dress like old Ben now. Based on the prequels, they go through about ten of those robes a week!

The Pigmen of Cloud City fished the original saber and Luke's severed hand out of the clouds - or something along those lines - and Vader collected them, eventually taking them to Palpatine, who in turn had them sent to the planet Wayland and put into cold storage.
