Started playing Beyond Good And Evil and it's the most fun I've had with a pig in years.

Neat! I didn't watch the whole video, but I like what I saw. Unfortunately, I don't have the cash to back such a project, but I wish it well. Also found that the original games are on GOG.com, so I added them to my wishlist!

Shirley you have $15?!?

I just wanted to tell you good luck, we're all counting on you.

Two people have pledged $10k. That's a ton of money. Were you one of them, Dr. Xhonz?

Sadly, no.  I wish I had that kind of scratch to privately fund this kind of stuff, but I don't.  Let's just say that my pledge was somewhere between $15 and $10k.

Well since we're pushing Kickstarter stuff in here now. I guess I'll go ahead and post about a couple.

First is from Stacy Davidson, creator of the Han Solo Adventures. He's looking for funds to start work on his first official game for his new studio Warbird Games. It's gonna be a classic point and click adventure game set in a Edgar Rice Burroughsesque scifi universe (awesome). Check it out!

Second, is for Sierra fans. The creators of Space Quest are back and wanna make a new game. I've only ever played the first King's Quest but Space Quest looks interesting. Check it out.

Nice anonymous donation, there, Tobar.  It's a good thing that I am not good at the maths, or else you'd be in realy trouble.  Like, the square root of -i trouble.

Now that it seems there's a good chance Tex will be back... it had me thinking the other franchise at whose passing I weep openly is Wing Commander.

Then I see this on slickdeals- Fan made WC game "WC Saga" is done and available for download.

Have I died and gone to heaven?

I haven't tried it yet, but the 3.x GB download should have finished last night sometime.

But seriously- Can Half Life 2 Episode 3 be far off?  Or a game that finally reveals the Secret of Monkey Island?

Sometimes I am afraid Valve has lost interest in Half-Life. They've had two huge unexpected successes since the HL days in Left 4 Dead and Portal, and have already made sequels for both of them. Hopefully DOTA 2 doesn't blow the world away and becomes Valves next big obsession that they drop everything else for. I'd hate to think we might see Left 4 Dead 3, Portal 3, and DOTA 4 before a Half-Life 3 is announced.

As for Monkey Island, we need to get Ron Gilbert interested in a kickstarter for his original vision of Monkey Island 3. Complete with old graphics and all (I am so tired of hearing about this kickstarter fad, everybody and everything has a kickstarter now and it is all anyone talks about. Maybe it is a good idea, maybe good things will come of this. It just seems everyone has become true believers in this, and it is still too early for anything to have come from any of it).

While that is my dream I don't see that happening under Lucasarts current regime. Ron doesn't own any of the rights to Monkey Island and Lucasarts has a general policy of never selling the rights to any of their properties period. Of course there's always the hope that another Darrell Rodriguez will come along as president but I'm not holding my breath. =(

As for Kickstarter, it has already proven itself. 10 percent of the films at the last Sundance were Kickstarter projects. If you funded the Double Fine Adventure project you'd see all of the awesome progress that's being made with that. Kickstarter is awesome and is helping bring about projects that I'd love to see but the bigwigs have no interest in (Space Command).

But yet Tales of Monkey Island exists.

I don't remember all the details behind that project or how it came to be, but from what I remember, Lucasarts had absolutely no creative involvement (other than maybe some overseeing for the sake of quality control) on the game and their name is on the project simply because they own the rights to the franchise. Ron Gilbert and Dave Grossman where both involved on that project too.

I could see it happening again. Especially if it is proven it could be profitable.

Tales of Monkey Island came about because the then president of Lucasarts Darrell Rodriguez was a big fan of the classic Lucasarts adventure games. He had a real passion for the business and was actively working on bringing Lucasarts back to the forefront of gaming. That is until he "resigned" (got canned) and replaced with a man who axed everything they had been working on except for SWTOR. The company currently has no interest in its roots.

Ah, I see. That is unfortunate. I suppose the MI HD games were because of him too? That is sad, I was hoping MI:3 and Grim Fandango might make it to Xbox Live.

Yup he's also the one that brought Lucasarts to Steam.

I wonder what the big companies think about all these kickstarter projects?

After abandoning the adventure game style and claiming it to be dead / dying or not profitable, here we see people raising hundreds of thousands of dollars on good faith alone - sometimes without a proof of concept..

It will be interesting to see how this pans out..

Just about 15 hours left in Jane Jensen's kickstarter and only a couple thousand dollars away from $400k, where the game content will expand and linux ports will be made as well.

$16 - choice of Moebius or Mystery Game X (don't decide now)

$50 - both games, weekly updates, soundtracks, beta testing, etc.

and plenty more reward tiers!

Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary

The only Halo game I had played before now was Halo 3. I didn't really know anything about it and even now can't really remember what the whole story was about but I remembered it was fun. I would always keep hearing about how great Halo was so I decided to play through the entire series. It helps that for some reason I've suddenly become quite interested in military Scifi. Can probably blame Mass Effect for that.

So anyway, I found a sweet deal on the new Anniversary edition of the original Halo and got it. Game only came out in November but I got it for a steal. It's the original game running on the original engine but has been updated graphically on par with today's console titles. They also went ahead and redid the soundtrack with a live orchestra and redid the sound effects. What's awesome is you can switch between the games original graphics and the new ones on the fly. Anyway, now that I've actually played Halo I can see what everyone's been talking about. It was a real blast and it's crazy to think it first came out almost 11 years ago.

So now that I'm sold on the franchise I went ahead and started looking around for a good deal on the sequel. And I was able to snag this for $5 bucks off some dude on craigslist. Complete and in fantastic condition! Probably start on that once I've finished AvP.

There are some extras in Halo: Anniversary that weren't in the original but were in later games like Halo 3.

Skulls that alter gameplay when activated - a lot of them are in hard to get to places, so it's not just a matter of knowing where to find them.

Terminals are short videos that fill in some of the Halo lore, similar to the text entries in Halo 3. They also hint at upcoming events [ie: Halo 4 et al]. There is also a secret 11th terminal unlocked via the Halo Waypoint. - iirc you need all 10 in game terminals to unlock it.

I don't remember any other shooter from back in those days that let you do all the things Halo did - and so seemlessly.

I'd love to see an update of Halo 2 that actually includes the things they had to cut from the game due to time constraints.

Looking forward to halo 4.

Yeah the terminals were interesting. It's kind of an odd experience for a first time player to come across one of those and suddenly be flooded (no pun =P) with all this exposition on lore you're not familiar with. Unfortunately I didn't find all of them but my brother who was visiting for the week loved Halo and he was great with finding all of them so the ones I missed I now know where they are. Skulls were an entirely different matter. During my whole playthrough I only found one and he didn't find any. =P

Finally finished Aliens vs Predator. That was one cool game. It had great atmosphere, good gameplay and a decent story. I really enjoyed the insight into the Predator culture. I don't get the general critics rating of it. The only things I didn't like about it was the lame dialog delivery (except for Lance Henriksen), the pretty terrible facial animations and how everyone's clothes looked like they were made of rubber. They should probably think twice about hiring that VO director again. =P

Started playing Ghost Recon: Future Soldier. So far I've found it to be a slick mash of first and third person shooter. Very refreshing. It's definitely a different feel than others I have played. Highly recommend it.

I honestly think, however, that I will be taking a break from purchasing any more games. I have a backlog that can choke a whale...

Sitting at $268k.  Donations have really slowed- we're definitely in the doldrums right now.  I'm hopeful that this kickstarter will follow the general kickstarter trend of earning about 50% of their money is the last 36 hours, but I'm also worried that it's reached everyone it's going to reach (for the most part) and the calvary won't be coming.

Help me, OT.com video game thread patrons.  You're my only hope.  Maybe.
