What is on offer here is an environment not a story and as such it's really good.

The 3D adds to the feeling that this is a theme park ride rather than a piece of cinema.

There are a couple of moments when there is a sense of characterisation but as it's not really necessary to explore the immersive environment so it's not really an issue.

The length isn't an issue either.

I can't see how a sequel set on the same world will work though.

If Cameron wants to make another Avatar film he should set it on another planet with an entirely new set of characters, creatures and situations.

I've seen this one now and as much as I found it diverting I don't feel any desire to see it again.
