Question: what was the original format of these movies? Video? Film?
I have just seen the official DVD release, but it looks like film to me
Holy zombie thread, Batman!
Both were shot on film, as they were released theatrically overseas. Very few tv movies were ever shot on video back then.
I still have my Laserdiscs. And I captured my off air VHS recording of Battle For Endor a couple years ago.

I have the MGM 1990 VHS, Not Rated, version of "the Ewok adventure". 1 hour & 36 minute run time if it helps anyone with this.
Could be great to have on DVD :-)

Can you make transfers of your LDs ?
Yes I can. But I've got a bunch of other LD's to get through first.

What I have is fullscreen but I'm watching it right now and it's pretty clean for it's age. It also has a film look, natural colors....I could fire up my DVDrecorder and make a disc. My upload speed sucks so I'd be willing to send someone a copy for upload, tweaks, what not....

They're all fullscreen. Would be interesting to know if they actually have widescreen masters for them.

Well if it's really "The Ewok Adventure" and not "Caravan of Courage", that would be a great thing to have. Well you can anytime send it to e.g. some person who has done some Ewoks DVD sets :-)

Yes, it really is "The Ewok Adventure", not "Caravan of Courage"...... :)
That would be a great injustice. I'd expect the stop-motion monsters to be replaced by CGI, and half the Ewoks would blink.digitalfreaknyc said:

That's what I figured.

Does it have the original intro ?
Looks like it was taped off of Showtime or something while they were having a "free preview" or whatever, sometimes a little "To subscribe, call..." message pops up on the bottom.

So it looks like the official DVD, not ?
Does anybody know if the theatrical version(s) were in widescreen? I'm not sure about the second film if it was released theatrically or not, at least here they only showed the first one.
And in the time of greatest despair, there shall come a savior, and he shall be known as the Son of the Suns.
Both were released theatrically in outside the U.S. You can see plenty of the posters on Ebay, including a couple weird ones. The one with a Han Solo lookalike in place of Wilford Brimley is my favorite.
I'm guessing open matte or 1.66:1. (They would have shot with tv framing marks in the viewfinder either way.) That rather huge book on ILM had a section on the FX work, so there might be a clue in that.
John Korty and directing brothers Jim and Ken Wheat are still active in the industry. Maybe someone could ask them what the aspect ratios were?
Where were you in '77?
I vaguely remember reading an article stating that "Caravan of Courage" theatrical was simply a matted version of the full screen version we already have. So there are 3 versions:
1. "The Ewok Adventure"- original version, has "Ewok Adventure" titles.
2. "Caravan of Courage" theatrical. A matted version of "Ewok Adventures" (unsure of the aspect ratio) with new opening titles
3. George's DVD version. A full screen version of "Ewok Adventure" with full screen "Caravan of Courage" titles and possibly other minor changes (?)
Battle for Endor has two versions (never received a theatrical run):
1. Original version in full screen.
2. George's DVD version in full screen which apparently has altered dialogue in places.
Episode II: Shroud of the Dark Side
“Back when we made Star Wars, we just couldn’t make Palpatine as evil as we intended. Now, thanks to the miracles of technology, it is finally possible. Finally, I’ve created the movies that I originally imagined.” -George Lucas on the 2007 Extra Extra Special HD-DVD Edition
Is this not a theatrical poster for the second film? Note yet another subtitle.
Where were you in '77?
"Ewoks and the Marauders of Endor"? What on earth is that?
Well, apparently there are 3 versions of that too. I know nothing about this. I thought it was only a TV movie.

Well, we don't know if the possible theatrical version is any different from the TV movie. That title could be only for the poster. Where is it from, the UK?
And in the time of greatest despair, there shall come a savior, and he shall be known as the Son of the Suns.
Ewoks and the Marauders of Endor/Ewoks II: The Battle for Endor was the second of these Ewok movie spinoffs, again made for tv but released cinematically abroad.
This time Lucasfilm seems to have intended the film for theatrical release, giving it a decent effects budget and shooting for widescreen instead of grainy tv print blow-up

That, my friend, is the catchy title they gave Battle for Endor in Australia/New Zealand.

So, a widescreen release that is still missing. Interesting.

If I can get the LD transfers done this month, who is going to take the lead on this?
