Thanks for your great work on this.

I am interested in playing this film at a Festival and would like to know how to go about getting hold of a DVD of the English narrated version.

Also, does anyone know about rights issues with this film? Is it in the public domain, is there a licence fee etc?

The original movie with danish voice is being showed, on sunday the 23 of January at 08:00 CET on the channel DR Ramasjang .. So I think it will be available in "high quality" or as high as it gets online after that I would think, many request's have been given, for people to record it.

regards omdal ...

Thanks omdal, that's interesting.. And good news of course!
Would be very nice if someone could cap the transport stream, I don't have the equipment for it myself unfortunately. It might have slightly better audio than my vhs source of course, I doubt the image will be better than the French DVD, but would be nice to see..

A bit of news...

Da Nao Tian Gong/Uproar In Heaven:
I recently learned that there is a French DVD of Da Nao Tian Gong (Le Roi Des Singes). I just received a copy today. It appears to be an almost-complete transfer of the French theatrical version. Almost, because although no major chunks appear to be missing like in the 40th ed., little chunks (like a half a second to a second) seems to be missing in many places.

It looks to be the best transfer of the theatrical version so far though, somewhat better than the Chinese bootleg source, but due to the chunks of frames missing it is still incomplete, and not a true representation of the theatrical version (and the DVD is French only)... sigh... This movie seem to be cursed or something.

I think this French DVD was released in the last quarter of 2008. It's really too bad I didn't have this version or even knew about it back when I was working on the restoration. :( I guess no French Monkey King fans visits the forum..

So it would be nice to do a v2 with the new material, but to be honest I'm not really itching to do much of that work again. In all likelyhood I'll get around to it but I can't really say when. Also the frames missing could make it even more time-consuming, since this is/was a frame-accurate restoration, as far as that is even possible.

I am so sorry to be interested in chinese animation so late. Because I am french and I discover recently that there was a full integral version of Uproar in Heaven (but only in french effectively). So if I was aware about it 2 -3 years ago, I could let you know T_T

I discover that  on this thread. The webmaster of this french website is very aware about all kind of animation.

Anyway you did an incredible work to remaster by your own this beautiful movie.

Maybe you will do a v2 from the french DVD one day. But as you said before it seems this french version missed few frames sometimes. But will be there a big difference of quality between your fan restoration (from french VHS in part) and a complete v2 from the french DVD ?

Otherwise I ordered recently all these chinese animation DVD from YESASIA (apprently they did new versions released in 2009). I am not sure about the video quality. I will see when I get my order. But the taiwanese version of Uproar in Heaven seems to be a 44 min version O_o

There WILL be a v2 using the French release, and though it's not a perfect release at all, there will be a pretty big increase in quality over my previous version.

Hmm, they put a new release date on some of those DVDs, but I doubt they changed anything, the covers look exactly the same as ever...
Did you order the Taiwan editions because you wanted NTSC versions?
Assuming they are the same as before, the Taiwan Uproar In Heaven DVD is absolutely horrible... It's basically the Chinese DVD converted to NTSC very badly, with the wrong aspect ratio to boot.. Quite frankly it's unwatchable..
Some Taiwan DVDs are completely different transfers though.

I actually bought all the "chinese animation" DVD (volumes 1 to 7, only the 4 is missing) just to have them in my collection. I am not looking exactly for a NTSC version, it's more about the english subtitles. All of them are subtitled. I didn't get my order yet but if you are interested I can send you some screens ?

But after reading this thread and discovered the bad transfer and the bad subtitles, I ordered as well the french DVD of Uproar in Heaven. Apparently the french dubber of the Monkey King is quiet good.

Ok, I just managed to catch Uproar on Danish TV -- it was basically the 40th edition, with a completely new narration also (didn't like the new narration).
So if anyone was hoping for the complete version, they were surely disappointed....

There was one notable difference from the DVD though -- no crushed blacks! So whatever master the TV station received was different from the dvd.. That doesn't really help this restoration though...

Oh and v2 IS IN PROGRESS!

Just to know : does it exist an integral chinese version of Uproar in Heaven ? With a complete chinese audio track ? Or the only one you can find is the french one ?

any thoughts on possiblea new transfer?

It's still a NTSC version. So you will get blended frames on this release since PAL to NTSC transfer (as the reverse way) is often bad made.

So it does not worth to buy it except if you want to watch the extras on the second disc.

This project sounds amazing. Especially the Danish narration :) Do you have any idea when it will be done?

My wife is a big fan of  the Monkey King (and the Danish narrator), and I would love to be able to give it to her.

Cheers, and amazing work!!!

Okay, so my local independent theater (http://nickelodeon.org) ran a 35mm print of the film as part of their Chinese film festival, and for free no less. The print was just a little dirty and splicey, but otherwise it was a nice, colorful print with clear sound. It had English narration by a British person. By the look of the English opening credits and ending title, I'm willing to bet this English version was made in the '60s not long after the film's original release. Possibly it was some sort of international version for foreign markets to use as a basis for their localized variants. I don't know how long the print was, but it definitely wasn't the heavily condensed version. It was probably somewhere in the ballpark of two hours, or something. For some reason the theater projected the film matted to 1.85:1, but it didn't really interfere most of the time and the credits weren't chopped off.

Now, I had never seen the film before this screening and was not entirely familiar with it, but I did know already about there being various versions and this restoration project.

If anybody has any questions they would like to ask me about the screening, I'll try to answer them.

So. I think I've read through all five pages by now and thus am qualified to speak. :D

I used to own a recorded VHS-tape when I was a child, which I watched over and over and over again, even more than the Lion King one. ;D I've been trying to get a digital copy of it ever since and was really sad when I found out that the 40th anniversary DVD was missing chunks.
I'm sorry to see that I'm too late to help out with the original project, but maybe there's something I can help with now? You probably won't need translators again, but I'm a Chinese raised overseas, so if there is something I can do let me know. =)

Unfortunately I don't know any video editing and neither own the software, but might have to take a class soon.

Also I'm sorry for asking this question, but I'm new (specially signed up for this >D) and don't know how this usually goes. The Rules say that it's handled individually by project, so is there any chance to still get my hands on the file? ;O;

News everyone.
Uproar In Heaven 3D was released in Chinese theaters Jan. 2012.
They call this a 'restoration', but it's not really...

It's the same animated movie, well sorta, but remade somehow, digitally I guess.
Some of the differences:
- Completely new score/soundtrack/dub
- Whole movie has been re-edited, no huge chunks missing this time, but many scenes have small cuts (for time/pacing I guess), the new runtime is about 86 mins @ 25 fps
- Frame has been expanded from 4:3 to around 1:86
- Everything has been recomposited (redrawn??) (assume digitally), most/all backgrounds altered/added to or redrawn
- Several scenes re-animated for 3d

Somehow I'm getting the feeling that this will be the only version available in the future..

Arrghh.. :(

I mean, in some ways it looks good, but it's NOT the 60's movie anymore.. At all...

Couldn't they have done a real restoration also??

@3a899c - Hope you found it by now. If you (or anyone really) can & want to help with translation please PM me! There's still lots of work to be done..

Time to revive this thread a bit..?

To the best of my knowledge Uproar in Heaven will enter the public domain 1st Jan. 2016 at the latest:

Copyright Law of the People’s Republic of China

Chapter II, Section 3

Art. 21

In respect of a cinematographic work, a work created by a process analogous to cinematography or a photographic work, the term of protection [...] shall be fifty years, expiring on December 31 of the fiftieth year after the first publication of such work[...].

Yes, I've still been working on and off (more off unfortunately) on the v2 restoration. As of now only a dozen or so shots remain, but these are the most time consuming and require MAJOR work (mostly rotoscoping).

The v2 will be the final version, there really isn't much more that can be gained from these sources. For a better version a 16 or 35mm print would need to come along.

With a bit of luck the v2 could be ready for new years..

A fresh pair of eyes (English or Chinese) for the subtitles would still be appreciated.

Also still looking for a way to capture two French PAL SECAM VHS tapes (Note: without this the French dub CANNOT be included).
