Predators (2010).

Manages to be my favourite of the series even without having Jesse Ventura in it and having a really long pause in the middle of things which kind of upsets the pacing (the scene was necessary but it should have taken place nearer the beginning of the film).

Adrien Brody as 'I thought it was Sasha Roiz for a second' Guy.

None the less 4 Rastacrabs.

Saw Avengers again. I think it's the first movie I've seen twice at the cinema since Spider-Man 2. I decided to check out the 3D version this time, as the last 3D movie I saw was Spy Kids in anaglyph 3D. It was quite impressive, but I chose a crappy place to sit and got reflections inside my glasses from an exit sign. I might have to see it in 3D again from a better seat...

One thing I noticed is that you miss a lot more watching in 3D. In 2D you have the focus chosen for you, but when you have multiple choices and focus on one thing, you miss all the others.

Dark Shadows.

Terribly mindless, dull, boring, pointless, unresolved and genuinely uninteresting. Two hours of Burton's concept drawings would have been more interesting. Johnny Depp is great however, and the moments where he appears in Vincent Price's costume from The Tomb of Ligeia makes you wonder what a modern horror film with those sensibilities would be like.

And for a Burton film to look this uninteresting is saying something. To add to all that, it doesn't even work on a silly level of juxtaposition as in Dracula AD 1972.

Balless and somehow worse than the sleep inducing overlong Alice in Wonderland.

And why must they shove in Christopher Lee? He's in the movie for all of 5 seconds and his presence makes you wish they had simply made a film with him instead.

Let me guess - someone had pale skin, dark circles around their eyes, and weird hair?

Man, I didn't see that coming.

Burton is a craptastic director. The guy has an eye for nice visuals, but beyond that he's a hack.

On the whole I agree, but as someone who has seen Ed Wood, I can't say you're completely correct.

Ed Wood still shows that characteristic Burton emptiness. The only reason his Batman films work is because there was too much material to mine from and both several writers and many drafts were used.

Ed Wood is a far superior film to either of his Batman films.

Compared to Lucas, I think not. ;)

I AGREE.  ED WOOD WAS A GREAT MOVIE.

I FINALLY GOT TO SEE THE AVENGERS, AND I MUST SAY THAT I WAS VERY PLEASED WITH IT.  I REALLY LIKED BOTH OF THE IN/POST CREDIT SCENES.

After a series of deep breaths....

Project X (1987)

My brother was visiting this week and while channel surfing we stumbled on WarGames. We were intrigued and I had remembered it was on Netflix so we decided to start from the beginning on there. Unfortunately it had been removed so we settled for what seemed like the next best thing: Project X. I had always thought this film had something to do with aliens. Probably should have studied the box art a little harder. =P But it turned out to be a decent film. We enjoyed it.

Earthquake (1974)

Continuing my tour through classic disaster films, the next stop was Earthquake. I must have had an interesting childhood, unsupervised at least. This was another film that while watching I was able to vaguely recall what's happening from some distant memory. It's a nice sturdy film. It stumbles here and there on convention but overall solid. Excellent miniature work throughout as well as composting. Some questionable use of practical effects here and there but they don't really detract from the film. Interesting cast with an even more interesting cameo by Walter Matthau as a drunk pimp. Ô_o

Disney, but I have seen the other of which you speak.

I liked the design of the air ships and a few other bits but I found the story to be incredibly boring.

Fantastic Four (2004).

I remember at the time of it's release this film was really heavily slated which put me off seeing it at the flicks.

It's far from perfect.

But many of it's flaws are endemic with superhero films (especially those that feel the need to establish an origin story).

What I liked about it was exactly what I liked about reading the comic when I was a kid.

It knows how silly it is and casually runs with it rather than spoofing itself too much.

I could have done without the tedious domestic romance and some of the in fighting which works in a comic but doesn't really work when you have a short time to tell a visual story.

If you chuck out the daytime soap in spandex scenes it's actually rather charming, especially the scenes with Ben coping with his new body and the fallout from his transformation.

It's hilarious how the first major superhero sequence and their reveal to the world is largely caused by Ben trying to casually be nice.

They touched on the Mr Fantastic In Bed stretch potential but I notice they skipped over Ben's 'thing' problem which was the major character preoccupation of me and my schoolmates.

It's a pity this, the Spiderman and X-men movies weren't brought into the same continuity as The Avengers  as it would have been fun to have a really expansive Marvel Movie universe.

Doctor Doom was pretty much wasted here.

I don't see why we needed a major villain in the first film.

Doom could have been transforming in the background while the team got to grips with their new life by solving more mundane problems, setting up a really good Doom movie.

Since they're like poetry, what with the rhyming and all, I find that I only need to watch three out of the six films.

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (2005)

Not a bad film, by any means, and unlike most remakes, this one actually respects the source material. However, most of the acting in the film is awful, which brings the movie down considerably.

I don't really know what to rate this, so I'll just give it a 5-to-6/10.

It would take a nifty explanation for why the Human Torch and Captain America are identical. Doom was terrible, Julian McMahon is about as scary as Topher Grace.

Or Captain America is the Human Torch! It's obvious now! Doom eventually depowered him, erased his memory, and sent him back in time to the 30s/40s. If we go the Futurama route, he may even prove to be his own grandpa!

They clearly would have cast some other underwear model to play Mr America.

just saw Avatar (2009).

What little story there is a plot sketch of other better tales.

The political message is so overstated it backfires on itself.

James Horner recycles the bits of his Search For Spock score that he recycled previously for Aliens (add a Celine Dion proxy on the end for good measure).

What is on offer here is an environment not a story and as such it's really good.

The 3D adds to the feeling that this is a theme park ride rather than a piece of cinema.

There are a couple of moments when there is a sense of characterisation but as it's not really necessary to explore the immersive environment so it's not really an issue.

The length isn't an issue either.

I can't see how a sequel set on the same world will work though.

If Cameron wants to make another Avatar film he should set it on another planet with an entirely new set of characters, creatures and situations.

I've seen this one now and as much as I found it diverting I don't feel any desire to see it again.

It aired as "A Princess of Mars", but for the DVD it's been retitled "John Carter of Mars". A dig at Disney's cryptic marketing scheme?
