The Avengers.  Enjoyed it quite a bit, even though I probably wouldn't have bothered to see it if my girlfriend hadn't twisted my arm.  Hell, she twisted my arm to watch nearly all of the lead-up movies to this, except The Incredible Hulk, most of which I hadn't seen.  It was certainly a good deal better than Iron Man 2, which, well, was just a waste of time with no story.  I agree that Joss Whedon should write all of Tony Stark's dialogue!

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

Avengers

Totally awesome. Whedon nailed everything. I think it was a bit slow at the beginning, but I can't imagine how any of it could have been done better. I don't think it could be a stand-alone movie, but then I didn't expect it to be.

And I could see *spoiler* coming as soon as they announced the director.

Re-watched these in preparation for the Avengers:

Iron Man 9/10

The Incredible Hulk 8/10

Iron Man 2 7/10

Thor 8/10

Captain America 8/10

Then I finally saw it!

The Avengers 9/10

They didn't miss a beat. Still trying to figure out whether or not it is my favorite MCU film. I think it is.

Key Largo 9/10

Cabaret 8/10

Bringing Out the Dead 9/10

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs 9/10

So, I've had this goal to watch every film on both of AFI's Top 100 Movies lists. I've been working on it for awhile, and saved the "best" (number 1) for last. I've never seen it before, and I finally watched it today (coincidentally Orson Welles' birthday).

Citizen Kane 10/10

I wasn't wowed. This might be because I already knew the reveal, though that did allow me to pick up on all of Kane's motivations throughout the film. But don't get me wrong. I almost wish I didn't know it was so acclaimed, so I could be surprised by both the end of the film and its quality. Either way, this is most certainly one of the greatest films of all time. Just maybe not the greatest.

The Iron Lady (2011).

Ok I guess.

The bits with Baroness T suffering dementia which make up a huge chunk of the piece were out of place in film based on such a character.

A prologue and a coda would have got that side of things across perfectly well.

As for the meat of the piece the television films The Long Walk To Finchley (2008), Margaret (2009) and The Falklands Play (2002) did almost every scene much better.

Despite it's big star and it's cinematic release it's still a television play more than a piece of cinema.

2 Strings Of Pearls.

I wound up going through my stack of animated Batman videos:

Batman & Mr. Freeze: Subzero is little more than an expanded episode of TAS. There's about 20 minutes or so of padding on top of a two-parter episode, and this makes the movie become tiresome. There is no additional development made so this added time was made to simply fill out the video time. There are several uneccessary CGI shots and sequences to boot.

2.5 balls out of 4.

Return of the Joker uncut-This is more like it. I have a big soft spot for Batman Beyond, and always thought it deserved a darker tone. Unfortunately after setting up a great premise, and having a fantastic plot twist, ROTJ remains stuck in the 70 to 80 minute children's animated video format. I wish this one had had more time to develop the storyline and enhance the overall drama. And whatever you do avoid the edited version. There's somewhere north of 50 edits made to tone down the violence.

3 balls out of 4 badass elder Bruce Waynes.

Mystery of the Batwoman-an even more tiresome regular episode expansion. The story revolves around a single plot idea that seems to have been thought of and then thrown into a bowl with other leftover random elements. Really tossed off and a waste of time.

1.5 balls out of 4.

Batman Vs. Dracula-An idea that seems silly at first, but that is treated with relative seriousness. Unfortuately this is designed for young children so there is little to no story depth. However there are a few fleeting moments of inspiration. (Vampire Joker!)

2 balls out of 4.

Batman: Gotham Knight-Pointless tie-in to Batman Begins composed of different anime directors making Batman segments, Animatrix style. One or two work pretty well , some drag terribly, and several of the anime styles do not work well at all for the Dark Knight. The real draw though is Kevin Conroy as always.

2 balls out of 4.

The IPCRESS File-the greatest spy film of all time. Michael Caine's definitive role is blue-collar spy Harry Palmer; the working class, gourmet, spectacled, cooking anti-Bond. Smart, detached, urban, paranoiac, and beautifully shot in Techniscope by a crew consisting of many members of the Bond film team. John Barry's score is haunting and perhaps his finest work. Some of the most inventive cinematography to ever be featured in a feature film. Caine gives us a man with Connery's superman swagger, but who is also painfully human too. He is defined by his arrogance and indifference to authority.

I'm obsessed with this film. 4 champignon mushroom balls out of 4 B-107s.

The Day The Earth Caught Fire (1961).

One of the best and one of the most gentle apocalyptic dramas ever made, not to mention probably the most realistic depiction of newspaper journalism (if you forgive the period charms of the piece).

The clever use of monochrome allowed for the use of stock footage which almost never stands out as being shoe horned in.

And the tints bookending the film are really effective too.

5 nukes.

Memento (2000)

Okay drama, over-hyped, over-rated but none the less solidly made.

Alien. 3 balls.

I'd forgotten how young Weaver looks in this one, She [Ellen Ripley] seems to have aged a LOT for somebody who spends most of her time in Stasis.

And given that the entire crew goes into stasis for long trips - including an android and I assume the cat - doesn't it seem odd that food is left out in the meals area - wouldn't it spoil while they sleep?

So I saw the Avengers on Monday.  Did things a bit out of order.  I won't add much, but after watching Avengers, I then saw Thor.  I would generally say that if you only saw one of the individual hero's movies beforehand, this is the most important, but having seen it out of order, I think I got a bit of a different perspective that I am grateful for.  The common antagonist seems like a typical megalomaniac in The Avengers, and I therefore prefer him in Thor.  While not a fantastic movie, the most enjoyable part of Thor was that same antagonist before he develops more grandiose schemes, and I like him far better.  He's actually quite sympathetic and interesting, and I don't know if I'd appreciate that as much had I seen the films in the correct order.  Just my thought.
