My friend's father actually has a list of movies he's never to see.  It's not required, of course, but said friend seems ok with following it. His father puts Ghostbusters 2 in the same vein as Rocky V.... I understand the latter at least.  For that matter, I'm not sure why BttF pt 3 is on that list.

BTTF 2 and 3 should both be on that list.

I have a strange soft spot for Ghostbusters II.  I mean, I know it's bad, but the nostalgia's just too strong with me on that one, I guess...

^I disagree.  I like Part 2... I mean it's not as good as the first movie, but it's by no means bad.  At least, I didn't think so.  It's the same stellar cast, with some really cool future stuff.  I'll admit that going back to the 50s was a bit of a cop-out, but I still enjoyed those scenes.

It doesn't have that feel-good nature that part 1 does, though.  Every time I feel bad about myself, I say "at least I'm not old George McFly!"  Pretty effective actually.

Still miss the ride.  My one true BTTF childhood soft spot...

BTTF2 is a million times better than Ghostbusters II.

Nobody's seen Avengers?? I keep hearing how good it is, but I want the straight dope from some people that actually have standards.

It doesn't come out until next Friday here in the States.

And about BTTF, I think the first one is a perfect, amazing stand-alone story, but the sequels throw in too much contrived B.S. to keep everything moving that it makes less and less sense as it goes on.  The "chicken" thing bothered me the most - a completely crippling personality flaw that Marty never had in the first one is suddenly introduced for no good reason, making his character seem much weaker, for what, the sake of giving him something he could change in the past to improve his future?  There are better ways to do that.

2 was also when they started casting the same people for different generations of characters - Michael J. Fox plays Marty and Marty's two children, for no good reason.  It's distracting, even though the fact that Marty, Jr. looks exactly like his dad is a plot point.  It's just a bit ridiculous.  Of course, 3 makes this even worse by casting the same actors as their century-prior ancestors - but that's to be expected, since 3 is basically a parody of itself.

2 does have one redeeming feature - the time travel mechanics, and the way the multiple timelines work.  I mean, really, it's just an expansion and clarification of the rules set up by 1, but it's very easy to follow for, say, a 6 year old, despite being a very complex topic.

And Marty's attempt at a disguise.  Love the hat.

But yeah ... I could go on and on about why BTTF 2 and 3 don't deserve to sit on the shelf next to the masterpiece that is the original.

Yet I somehow still like Ghostbusters II...

It's strange that Avengers is out here more than a week earlier.

Yeah, I hate the chicken thing... but that's about it. The third movie disappointed me but I've come to enjoy it for what it is.

You'd be amazed at how the gene pool repeats itself in some family trees. My father had an Uncle that was the spitting image of him, only much older. An old friend of mine once showed me picture of his grandfather from WWII, and I thought he was pranking me. The resemblance was uncanny. Unless he actually went back in time and was part of a bomber crew!

I've had more than enough odd encounters in my life to make me think I have an evil twin out there someplace. ;)

that is gold.

re: Avengers - all you really need to know is that it's funny, exciting and unpredictable.

The 3D is well presented but the movie is great without relying on it.

They probably could have done a bit more to bring the audience up to speed - I'm sure plenty of people will see this who haven't seen the lead in films and might get a bit confused.

From what I've read they did plan to cast Edward Norton as Hulk / Banner again - but now I'm kinda glad they didn't. I do get a bit bothered when parts are recast but after seeing this film Mark Ruffalo IS Bruce Banner / Hulk.

Robotic double bill.

First up Android (1982)

I haven't watched this for years and it really has improved with age.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, cameras just love Klaus Kinski.

He could do anything, anything at all and somehow I would be compelled to watch.

Don Keith Opper gives a very sensitive and endearing performance as Max and Aaron Lipstadt (whatever happened to him?) manages to squeeze a very effective film out of a microscopic budget.

4 Breasts.

Next Death Machine (1994).

Hilarious (unintentional?) spoof of almost every 1980's Science Fiction action film.

If The Asylum made this film it would be billed as Terminalien Vs Robommando, being part Terminator, part Aliens, part Robocop, part Max Headroom, Part just about everything.

In an amazing shift of career Brad Dourif plays a utter nutcase (who uncannily resembles Tommy Wiseau).

It's really fun and punchy stuff.

Too good to be so bad it's good.

The only aspect of the piece I didn't enjoy was a really out of place piece of character exposition which makes Phoebe Cates' dislike of Christmas in Gremlins almost seem tasteful.

4 All The Children.

Batman & Robin

Every time I come to this again, I think..."Oh, it can't as bad-it's just like an overly cheesy attempt to make an episode of the TV series."

No. It isn't. The TV series though being a satire/spoof, had a certain sense of dignity that elevates it to a level of Shakesperian tragedy over this mindless dreck.

This film is truly godawfully terribly frustratingly infuriatingly bad. Everything in the production is merely recycled from Forever-right down to the same exact music cues. It was a rushed production, since there had been a big hit with the previous film-and no one thought to double check anything-especially the script!!!

FREAKING ICE SKATE BOOTS? AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!

The dialogue is beyond mere cringe-inducing, and hopefully you aren't a fan of puns on the cold. The acting is terrible across the board and there is absolutely no reason to care a damn bit about anything going on onscreen. Clooney is so one-note that you literally want to punch Batman. This desire becomes so great, that the constant whines of Robin are almost a welcome reprieve from the terrible cardboard Bruce Wayne.

When the biggest draw of your Batman film is a mere subplot about a sick Alfred, you know you have screwed up royally. When Batgirl throws off her cowl for no apparent reason, you know you're screwed. When you've cast Ahnuld and Uma Therman, you're beyond screwed. There is too much junk added on to the visuals, so that a bad film is made even worse with all kinds of gunk onscreen. There's even a freaking gang dressed up as Alex DeLarge & Co.! WTFH?!?!?!?!

In a word, BALLESS!!! There are worse films, but this one has you stark raving mad by the end.

I don't know. Maybe the chicks in green spandex/black rubber make it worth your while? =P

Nope. Definitely not. Not even that could save this big toy commercial. And to top it all off, they freaking ruined Batgirl. Go figure.

Batman Begins

I went into the theater not really knowing what was going to unfold. The gestation period had been going on for so long, with so many failures that I wondered if there would ever be another Bat film. I liked Begins immediately, but while watching it just felt like something was always missing. the production design was great and with all of the yellows and browns effectively created yet another film Gotham that we hadn't seen before. Performances were great, but something was just off a bit.

This something was the story. Begins felt like yet another "clever" Batman graphic novel that had great potential, but lost sight of both it's story and connection to the character in the pursuit of greatness. The film just didn't have the full development that I would want from a Batman, let alone an origin story. Thus, to me it was a good movie that had several disappointing aspects. After the sequel, I realized that we were lucky to get as much development as we did.

Then I happened to stumble across the novelization of Begins. Figured I'd see if there were any dropped bits from the film and read through it...and realized that it had been written by Dennis O'Neil. Here is the depth I had been looking for. There are only some minor additions and re-shuffling, but the pacing, tone and detail that were input into the book are far beyond what the film just glosses over. Though the book has the luxury of inner character thought, the detail and energy are much greater than the colder film. And of course, you'd expect this from the guy who helped to bring back the serious Dark Knight in the 70's. Not to mention the fact that he created Ra's Al Ghul in the first place.

The film: 3 balls out of 4 defective cowls.

The book: 3.5/3.75 balls out of 4 bloody ninja suits.

The book has really enhanced my enjoyment of the film, and I'm interested to find his novelization of TDK.

It's just not the same, man.  I own the DVD with it, but watching it without the motion simulator would ruin any and all memory I have of it so I've chosen not to do a rewatch.

Well, let's leave Ghostbusters 2 out of it for the moment.  Anyone who rates the original only 8/10 should be turned into a dog.

Tron Legacy (2010).

Jeff Bridges is certainly a man of seasons.

I kind of fancied chubby Kong Jeff, I had a thing for Starman Jeff, dug Daddy Bear Ironman Jeff and now I see he's God.

Other than Jeff and blink and miss him Bruce "get the hell out of our galaxy" Boxleitner (why the film is called Tron Legacy at all is a bit confusing) it's practically a remake with a bit of The Matrix thrown in, in a way that makes surprising sense.

In some ways it's a better film than the first one (the story is the same but it has more momentum and the villain is a bit more nuanced) but it lacks that shock of the new and it hasn't got as much an art sensibility to it.

You could frame many stills from the first film and hang them in a gallery, if you did the same with this film you would have a film still on your wall and not a lovely bit of graphic fine art.

Writing out Cindy Morgan like that just seems sexist.

The old boys can come back but old girls it seems are a no, no.

So what actually happened to the earlier grid?

I thought at the end of the first film it was reinvigorated now that it was free from the MCP.

In this film Flynn has starts out wanting to build a whole new system so does it exist along side the old restored one or did he just apocalypsize it?

Flynn is a really tough deity to love especially by the end of this one.

Sure the grid denizens get to view his only begotten son but it looks like he doesn't turn out to be much of a saviour.

At least one guy gets to explode in big Jeff's loving embrace... but it should have been me.

As those who've been reading in the Dark Knight Rises thread know:

The Dark Knight

Still seems confused to me, and the more I think about it, less like Batman.

2.5 balls out of 4 hockey pads.

Mask of the Phantasm

Just felt like I needed to rinse my mouth out. Or something like that. Harmed only by its initial direct-to-video origins and time constraints, MOTP is one of the two complete Batman films, the other being Returns. Here every shot is telling a story while being extremely creative with the composition. Though one could argue that this is merely an expansion of an episode from the already mind-blowing Animated series, it isn't. (Subzero is however.) The story is rather simple and though the plot twist is visible early on, the sheer amount of subtext is fascinating. There is a reason why you can watch this little animated movie dozens of times and not be bored. Like Returns, you sit in the dark and can just drink it all in, wallowing in the thematic sorrows of the winged avenger.

And the Technicolor printing adds hues never seen on the TV screen, further separating this from the series.

I've never realized how shoddy the DVD is however. The full-frame version seems more of an open matte, revealing more image on the top and bottom but losing on the sides. The 35mm grain was heavily magnified in the transfer, and I'd be surprised if this wasn't simply the 90's LD master simply ported over. But it's got a freaking great Dolby Stereo surround track. I think this film is the reason why I still love Dolby Stereo to this day. This movie was my first theatrical Batman experience, and I much later realized that I saw it in one of the big state of the art THX built theaters. Talk about overwhelming to a 3 year old. Inside it was cold, dark, empty-much like the Batcave.

4 balls out of 4 dense long-chained macromolecular polymers.
