Ack!  Thanks for the assist on the burnt-in sub, definite big mistake there!  (the native file was created by deleting lines from the full file--not enough it seems!).  The priority for getting out an updated version now cannot get any higher!

For your alien subs, you may want to italicize the unintelligible words so that the intelligible ones at least stand out more, or maybe just italicize them in their entirety to indicate they're another language.  Not sure about that but I think it might look OK.  Also you may consider subtitling the parts with burnt-in subs...but subtitling the alien language.  i.e. when the burnt-in subs say "Going somewhere, Solo?", your subs could say "Oota goota Solo?" (or whatever it is).  That's another element that definitely makes it incompatible with my idea of subs, but it still could be neat in a different set.

Also, I added the "... my lord ..." line, as a double-dialog with Jabba's groan (following the timing of the SDH sub).  Luckily this was easy to translate into the other languages without having to worry about grammar.

...and I backslid on "Hell".  I am nothing if not circumspect...

I'm assuming SW and ESB have no more suggested changes, so I'm rendering these now so that I can upload the changes faster.  I'm holding off on ROTJ for now.

By the way, I made a discovery today that syncing the wrong subtitles to the film can occasionally be hilarious.  For example, Vader can become a wisecracking action movie villain:

Lol @ Wisecracking Vader.

Yeah I don't think I'll have anything else to say on SW or Empire except to touch on the issue of italics and punctuation -- unless there's some other set of rules for subtitles, this site says that you do not italicize the punctuation mark unless it is part of what is being italicized. So for example in "You've never heard of the Millennium Falcon?" you would not italicize the question mark.

Author
Time

Too late for that, I probably won't change mine anyway.  For things like that I go off the implementation of subtitles on discs I think are done with some attention to detail (this is how I decided on the rules about leading ellipses, etc).  That may vary from, say, how a newspaper handles it.  And they could very well be wrong, but I'm at least consistently wrong now ;)

Yes I think doing it one way consistently is most important in cases like this.

Ah crap you convinced me.  OK re-rendering SW and ESB now...

:D  Where'd you land on Hell being capitalized?  Like you said, it's a proper place name being used as a place, much like "I'll see you in Paris" or "I'll see you on Bespin."  I'm leaving mine capped.

Author
Time

I landed on non-capped, but considering how I drifted around on it, don't consider it a permanent decision yet.  It's definitely a proper place name, but I read around to get a sampling of real-world usage and it appears (at least for "Go to hell!" which was the phrase I checked), it's trending lowercase, possibly because the people who use the phrase don't even consider that they're talking about traveling to a location, it's just a kind of mass of words with a single meaning.  I like doing things the "proper" way, but when proper and contemporary usage differ, I go for contemporary (e.g. "gonna").  Also I'll be gone for a few days so nevermind the radio silence for a bit.

That's why you get people spouting phrases like "could of/would of/should of" and "for all intensive purposes."  They don't know what the words mean, they just mash a string of syllables together and call it language.  Towards the dark side, that path leads.

----------

Alright, getting back to the alien dialogue.  The "... thirty-five ..." line isn't subbed on my DVD, it just says [Speaking Huttese] like some others.  Translation I found on the web says:

"Uneetung thirty-five, dateel, in ahm ny."

To me that last part doesn't sound like "in ahm ny," I hear a very distinct "t" sound before the first syllable and that same syllable sounds like it ends on an "m" not an "n" to me.  There might also be a little bit of "ng" going on in the "ahm ny."  What I ended up with was this, let me know if you can think of a better way to put it:

"... thirty-five ..." -> "Uneetung thirty five, dateel, ti magh ny."

...also moved the start time back just a hair, to 00:15:50,038.

----------

...and actually I think I'll just have him say "Wookiee" instead of "Wooky."  And I do like your suggestion of putting the unintelligible words in italics, a'la "Ky is ka chone kawa Wookiee.  Uneetung thirty-five, dateel, ti magh ny."  Using "Wookiee" instead of "Wooky" lets me keep at least one un-italicized word in that line, else it'd be entirely alien and then we wouldn't even sub it at all.

Don't know how I'll handle the punctuation in those lines yet, have to think on it for a while...

----------

Continuing:

"... Skywalker ... Jabba ..." -> "Yo macka chipoway pan Skywalker. Jabba mo botoba tu."

^^In the DVD subtitles it says "chipowan Skywalker" and "botowa tu," although I hear an extra syllable in "chipowan," and "botowa" sounds more like it ends on a "ba" to me than a "wa."

----------

"... Jabba ... no bargain ..." -> "Jabba no tusen di hunka bi. No Bargain."

----------

"... Jabba now ..." -> "Titaka bu Jabba now."

^^DVD subs say "Ataka" instead of "Titaka," but I hear it this way.

----------

"... Luke Skywalker, Jedi knight ..." -> "Gabba nopez Luke Skywalker, Jedi Knight."

^^I might change either this or the "Cava notayce, my lord" line, as I imagine he's saying the same thing here both times, probably something akin to "you have a visitor."  I'll have to listen more closely before I make up my mind.

----------

"... Jedi ... Jedi ..." -> "Tibi Jedi! Tibi Jedi!"

----------

There's a line, not subtitled either in your project or in the official DVD, but I heard it clearly enough while going through that I thought it should be in there:

00:26:48,991 --> 00:26:51,680
Into the pit with ya!

^^When Luke's trying to escape from the rancor, when he opens up the door with the cage on the other side, someone shoves him back in and says this to him.

----------

"... Jedi ..." -> "Tibi Jedi."

^^Also moved the start time back to 00:31:01,750.

----------
00:51:14,804 --> 00:51:16,866
I know what
she means to you.

^^If you move the start time on this back to where the last line ends, you can fit in Lando's "You know":

393
00:51:12,668 --> 00:51:14,668
All right, old buddy.

394
00:51:14,669 --> 00:51:16,866
You know, I know what
she means to you.

----------

395
00:51:17,140 --> 00:51:21,235
I’ll take good care of her.
She won’t get a scratch.

^^He stutters a bit on "She" here:  "She- she won't get a scratch."

----------

397
00:51:31,620 --> 00:51:34,314
I got your promise.
Not a scratch.

^^"I got your promise, now."

----------

466
01:01:33,121 --> 01:01:35,988
– Where’s Leia?
– She didn’t come back?

^^"What, she didn't come back?"

----------

467
01:01:36,358 --> 01:01:39,953
– I thought she was with you.
– We got separated. We better go look for her.

^^"Hey, we better go look for her."

----------

473
01:02:34,476 --> 01:02:36,876
I’m not
going to hurt you.

^^This could be another "gonna."

----------

482
01:03:40,775 --> 01:03:45,269
Look. It’s a hat. It’s not
going to hurt you. Look.

^^Ditto with "gonna."

----------

512
01:08:02,704 --> 01:08:04,604
I don’t get it.

513
01:08:04,638 --> 01:08:06,838
It’s just a dead animal, Chewie.

^^"Hey, I don't get it.  I mean, it's just a dead animal, Chewie."  With or without the commas, I'm not sure.  Keep going back and forth on those.  There's no discernible pause, so I may end up leaving them out.

----------

That's where I'm stopping for now.  I'm still puzzling out how I'm gonna handle story-time with 3PO and the Ewoks.

Thanks a lot, Jedi definitely got the least proofreading (and is really difficult in spots), so this is helping a lot.  Very good work!

FWIW I fixed the Threepio "It's restricted." grouping in SW (except in the SDH subs where it's unchanged) and also capitalized Hell. ;)

Taking all of your last ROTJ English changes, except below:

Not sure about "Into the pit with you".

For the dead animal line, I'm not sure Han says "I mean"...it sounds more like "Nah" or "Aah" to me.  Not being sure exactly what it is, I'm leaving it alone (but included the "Hey").  Han makes a similar "Aah" sound before shooting the trash compactor beast and I didn't subtitle it either.

I also decided for consistency on alien languages to take out Jabba's "Oohh!" lines since they are pretty much equivalent to Chewie's howls.  So they get subbed in the SDH subs but not the normal ones.  And the "... Jabba du Hutt ..." line is now "... Jabba the Hutt ..." because I'm subtitling what you are able to understand, not the literal sounds (which is more like what you're doing).  And I grouped Lando's lines together "That blast came from the Death Star/That thing's operational!" and got rid of the "Oh!" sub for his copilot, since I never really liked that grouping either.

So I guess sentence grouping isn't off my radar after all...

EDIT: It occurred to me that since you're subtitling alien languages, you'd be able to subtitle "Lapti Nek", which might be neat!  You could even do the little musical note symbols ;)

Project files have been updated to version 1.2, incorporating many suggestions from IronMagus (original post has been updated as well).  Please check tehparadox for the updated links, they are NOT the same as the original link.

Rough summary of changes:

Minor improvements to subtitles in all languages for all movies, fixed one major mistake in ROTJ where a burnt-in subtitle was unnecessarily subtitled.  SRT files contain many fixes (codepage fixes, closed all italic tags) which should improve compatibility with other software and platforms (I cannot guarantee they will work with everything, however).  Project files are broken into three separate downloads so that people just looking for one type of file don't have to download as much other stuff.

Well, I came from the Harmy's release topic and I want to know how can I help with this project. Answering to the question from that topic, I don't have the brazilian GOUT version.

Also, were can I download the files from the project?

You'll need to go to tehparadox and search for the term "Project Threepio".  Like Harmy, I don't post direct links on this forum.

As to help, all I really need is Portuguese subtitle rips from the Brazilian GOUT for ESB and ROTJ, even better if someone can convert them to text files and proof them for errors.

I have a question for subtitle-minded people.  Some foreign versions of Star Wars use altered character names in their dubbed versions (see this thread for an example: http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Preserving-French-Original-Trilogy/topic/14168/).

Now, as I've stated before, my foreign-language subs are designed to go with the English audio (not dubs), so what should I do about character names?  At the moment French is inconsistent--Darth Vader is Dark Vador, but all other characters use English names.  I believe all of my other subs use English names.  Should I switch them to all English so that they match the English dialog better?  But if I do that, will I confuse people who aren't familiar with the English versions of the names?

My inclination is to use all-English names in the "full" subs, and all-foreign names in the "forced" subs, because full is designed to accompany English audio, and forced is designed to accompany a foreign dub.  Any thoughts on that?  Would having them be different be even more confusing?  If you have a list of foreign versions of Star Wars names use in the opening crawls and burnt-in subs (in the languages I have subs for), that would be helpful too!

FRENCH EXAMPLE

Princess Leia - Princesse Leia
Han Solo - Yan Solo
Jabba the Hutt - Jabba le Forestier
Luke Skywalker - Luc Courleciel
Hoth - Hoth?
Darth Vader - Dark Vador
Tatooine - Tatooine?
Chewbacca - Chiktabba

Actually, having browsed some foreign-language Wikipedia entries, I'm now thoroughly confused and inclined to leave things in their current state: Dark Vador being the only translated character name.

Hey sorry it's been a while.  Let's get back to Jedi:

01:17:25,146 --> 01:17:27,646
Hurry up, will you?
I haven’t got all day.

^^In the vein of writing "gonna" when they say "gonna," etc.,  this could be a "ya" instead of "you."

01:17:25,146 --> 01:17:27,646
Hurry up, will ya?
I haven’t got all day.

----------

01:20:50,550 --> 01:20:54,350
Nothing. I just want to be alone
for a little while.

^^There's another stutter here: "I-I just want to be alone..."

----------

01:30:27,561 --> 01:30:32,561
In time,
you will call me master.

^^"me" could be italicized.

----------

01:40:09,278 --> 01:40:11,078
Pressure steady.

^^Who says this?  It's not Lando, who is the only one onscreen.  Can't tell if it's coming from inside the cockpit or over a comm-link.  Should it be italicized?

----------

955
02:03:19,766 --> 02:03:21,966
It’s not like that at all.

^^I hear this as "No, it-it's not like that at all."

----------

That's all I've got.  Thanks again for putting this out here for us, and I'm glad if I could be some help :)

Thanks, I'll take a look at all of these, but the "Pressure steady" is a weird line spoken by someone in the Green Squadron who doesn't ever say anything else and just flashes onscreen for a second.  It is a definitely weird line, I'm not even sure what it means, but there it is.  It's spoken onscreen, so it's not italicized.  I sure hear it, and it's even in the official subs.

Argh forget what I wrote about the Green Squadron, that was a different line.

I checked against the script and it's supposed to be "Pressure's steady." with an alien response from Nien Nunb.  The script says the navigator says it, so I added an SDH cue.  As such, it's clearly within the cockpit and shouldn't be italicized.  Also, for the other suggestions I only added Leia's stutter for I want to be alone.  The second doesn't sound like a "No" or a stutter to me--just some nonverbal noises she makes.  That's all I changed, so I'll sit on these changes for a while and see what else someone might see before uploading.

Just one last thanks to you in case I don't hear from you again--you've been very, very helpful!

Hey, CatBus, I can upload the compressed (and without audio) GOUT DVDs, so you can check the subtitles, or something like this... Did you changed anything from the subs that I gave to you?

Author
Time
 (Edited)

So far, not much in the Brazilian ESB subs have changed (I'm only 1/4 done, but so far it looks like what I had before was mostly good).  I actually fixed a typo that's in mine AND the GOUT, where "Rogue" is spelled "Rouge" once, and that's just because I'm going through it again and am catching things like that.

As for fonts, I'm not looking to match the GOUT font, size, or position.  The non-anamorphic nature of the GOUT gave them a lot more black bar area for use with subtitles, so they were able to make different choices.  Also subtitles for VHS and early DVDs were larger and they've gotten a little smaller over time, as the average TV size has increased.  I'm really targetting something completely different with these (16x9 and modern size), so I don't mind that mine look different.

EDIT: I should add that I doubt I'll be so lucky with the ROTJ subs; I am most suspicious of those.

CatBus, please  use only my Portuguese subs. The internet subs have too many errors and they have "original names" where it shouldn't have.

For example (this "names" are only a prequel trilogy problem), in Attack of the Clones, Master Jedi Sifo-Dyas is Zaifo Vias in Portuguese subs because Sifo-Dyas sounds like "F*-Your-Self" in Portuguese. And there is another one, Dooku in Portuguese subs is Dookan because Dooku souns like "Something-That-Came-From-Ass" in Portuguese. No offense.

Mostly of the internet Portuguese subs are fan-made, so they didn't corrected the "dirty" names.

Sorry about my dirty words, but this is very funny.

I am using your subs--definitely not the fan ones when I have an option--but I am including the sort of changes that are in the other foreign subs (such as subtitling when people say "Luke" or "No", which sometimes gets left out).  As for foreign vs. original names, the only differences I saw were Tauntaun->Tonton and tibanna->tibano.  As discussed earlier, I'm going with original names where possible unless people may not understand the original names.  I did capitalize Tibanna to give a better indication it's a foreign word.  Let me know your thoughts on this.

Not to worry, though, I have no plans to do the prequel trilogy.  And Dooku has the same problem in English...
