First of all I want to congratulate you on your work and dedication to this project. It's really made Star Wars a better experience for all of us on our HDTV's.
However, I'm faced with a problem that I can't seem to find the bottom of, and that is the subtitles. Now, there's the fact that I know each and every line of the movie head to bottom and left to right, but as the years pass by and as I am looking to archive your wonderful work for eventual re-watching, I can't help but ask myself if there are any subtitles on the internet synchronized with these versions so that if I'll ever want to introduce this to my kids or some other person, then I'll know I'll have the subs just in place to pitch in to create a better experience for a first time watcher.
So I'm asking you, are there any subtitles available and if so, is someone willing to share them with me ? I can't seem to find any. It would be greatly appreciated.

Check out the Threepio OOT subtitles in this same forum section - I believe they will work. As to syncing them up, someone else will have to pipe in; I've never synced subtitles on a DVD, just in VLC media player.
While we patiently wait for Harmy to finish finals, has anyone seen if Snicker has got a thread up anywhere yet? That's some promising looking stuff and I haven't seen any action yet in terms of a dedicated thread.

I was in my mid-20s when Star Wars Episode IV – A New Hope was first released on May 25th, 1977 (I’ll let you do the math). Yesterday, my son who’s in his early 20s gave me three burned DVDs with Harmy’s ‘despecialized’ versions of Episodes IV, V, and VI. For me, Harmy has done what George Lucas could (I’ll avoid the contentious ‘should’) have done – created the definitive restored versions of the original theatrical releases. Thank you, Harmy, for helping to preserve these classics. The burned DVDs have now replaced the commercial ‘special’ version DVDs in their DVD cases. Note to George: When someone – even the creator – tries to change a masterpiece in order to improve it, they will fail.

You and your son need to be on the lookout for Harmy's new versions. Star Wars should be available very soon and totally blows away his first effort - both in terms of picture quality and theatrical accuracy.

This is the definitive original cut restoration. Adding scenes that Lucas never had in the final cut is not the purpose of this edit, though there are some in this forum that are.petemct said:

Perhaps he means as a bonus feature, the way that a proper release of the OT would have.
I can get the deleted scenes anywhere. Harmy's V.2.0 I can't.

Without doing anything to them, it wouldn't be right to put them on there. You can buy the official Blu-rays if you want the deleted scenes.

I think there are a lot of people who would like to be able to download Harmy's DE 2.0 and burn it to a disc and replace the ANH Bluray on their shelf. They wish it was a replacement for the official releases, with commentaries, special features, and deleted scenes, like an official release. Obviously that's not what's going to happen, but that desire exists, and it's pretty understandable. People don't want to have to fish around in the closet for a disc they wish they didn't legally need to own in an astoundingly ugly case just to see what (in an ideal world) should be on the same disc as OOT.
And yes, that would mean cleaning up the deleted scenes.
AFAIK, short of the commentaries, there are no bonuses on the film disc itself, so you'd simply hold on to your bonus disc. There will be DeEd specific bonus features on the BD.
As a person who's discovered Harmy and his work midway through, I've scanned through the 170 pages in this thread and I have a few questions that would help me and no doubt any other onlookers and passerbys.
Lastly, I'd like to express an immense amount of gratitude to Harmy and anyone else involved in the restoration of these films. I know it's just entertainment, but they were a large part of my childhood and when my son gets old enough, they will be for him too. Nothing will please me more than to show him the originals in all of their HD glory. Words can't describe how much your work and dedication is appreciated.

It's unbelievable how much work goes into these. I see now why it takes some time to complete!
What's even more amazing is that one man, Harmy, is doing all of this and not a team of people like ILM. Impressive, most impressive.

Although Harmy deserves the bulk of the credit, there are a lot of people involved in providing Harmy with the sources he uses. Upscaling the GOUT footage, rendering the credits, and audio are all mostly or entirely done by others. Let alone identifying the things requiring despecialization. That doesn't make it the least bit less impressive.

That's not what I've read here:

@Harmy: Wouldn't it be nicer to use separate subtitle files (like the ones I mentioned earlier on this page) instead of the "burned-in" ones which are now present in your current releases?

They were burned-in on the original releases which this project is attempting to re-create. Though with the right setting, the MKV and Blu-ray releases would benefit from that, that way other languages could have their own "theatrical" subtitles for Greedo.
