I always stay at the Hotel Chelsea but I never go there after 1982.
Hey Guys,
I'm travelling to New York City in October. I've been a bunch of times but always on business so never had to book myself and never ventured far out of Manhatten. This time I'm going with my girlfriend using my own wallet, so just wondered if you guys could give me some good, honest advice about where to stay on a budget. As I'll be with my other half, I don't want to stay in a skanky hotel or a dangerous area, but also don't want to spends thousands.
What are some good areas? Any suggestions for nice but affordable hotels? Is renting an apartment a better option? Easy access to all the usual tourist stuff would be good.
Any advice greatly appreciated.
:)

If you're actually considering renting an apartment is it safe to assume this is an extended visit?
I'm afraid all I know in that regard is that whenever we used to visit my grandfather it was tough to find a cheap hotel; namely, anywhere near Penn Station is expensive. Then again, we usually visited on-season for holidays (X-Mas time etc.) Wish I could be of more use.

Not long-term, just 5 nights. A colleague told me they once rented an apartment for a week because it worked out cheaper than a hotel in a similar location.

I've been to the City a good many times, never stayed at a hotel there though. My SO is from there, but she only replied, "New Jersey." And that's clearly not a good idea (sorry, Warbler). Looking at expedia, there are hotels in decent parts of Manhattan for as low as $150/night in October (granted the rooms look budgety). I could offer some idea about various neighborhoods if you are considering any particular ones.
You could always go upstate, pick apples and such ;)

I hope sir, that you were only referring to the northern half of my state?

But of course ;)

Why New York? Isn't the old York good enough for you? =P
There's a new York?
There's a new Jersey (I am falsely declaring ignorance there... I got a few new Jerseys for Christmas... I hope nobody is living in them though...*shudders*)?
